5x00 General discussions / Sl5500 With Cacko Rom Does Not Preview Graphics
« on: November 18, 2005, 10:45:30 pm »
With the 3.10 sharp rom an email containing a graphic was visible at the bottom of the email without saving the attachement and opening it up with another program.

I really miss this feature that does not seem to work with the cacko rom.

Any ideas of why there is only a blank screen with the cackom rom as opposed to the Sharp rom? I especially miss not seeing my faxes sent in tif format.

Also, it appears as though it does not even download attachments at all. I have not done any full tests yet, but all my faxes in tif format that are emailed to me cannot be viewed at all: there is just a distorted image if I try to open them with tiff viewer.

Thanks for any clues.

Sharp ROMs / Socket Bt Cf Card (rev G) & Cacko 3k (beta1)
« on: November 11, 2005, 11:53:41 am »
I have an sl5500 and c3100 and the process is the same to get my socket card to work, I have all the proper bluez files and sudo file etc...:

I first have to shut down bluetooth:

/etc/rc.d/init.d/bluetooth stop

Then I eject the card using:

cardctl eject

Then I re-initiate the card with:

cardctl insert

Then I restart bluetooth:

/etc/rc.d/init.d/bluetooth restart

Then I bring up the network program from the settings menu.

Click on the "globe" in the taskbar, tap connect and it works 100% of the time using the 3100 with standard sharp rom and the 5500 with the cacko rom.

I wish there were an easier way to connect, but it's relatively quick to go through the process above everytime. I'm just happy that it works.

Sharp ROMs / Cacko Rom Email For Sl5500 Does Not Display Tif...
« on: November 08, 2005, 08:01:28 pm »
Hello,

I am using the last cacko rom for sl5500 and I noticed that the tif attachements were visible and viewable directly from the email screen using the 3.10 sharp rom. With this cacko rom, tif attachements are a blank and I can't even save them. I'm not sure why and was wondering if the email portion is upgradable to the latest QT version? I don't want to switch back to the sharp rom as the cakom rom, quite amazingly, lets you use a 1 gig sd card as an internal drive and it is working really well.

Any ideas? the tif files are are sent to me from a "fax to email" service like efax in which a fax is turned into a multipage tif attachement and emailed to one's inbox. It was pretty cool to just view these faxes directly from the main email screen without any conversion or any work whatsover.

Thanks,

Will it read multi page .tif files? Often the format used for fax to email deliveries?

General Discussion / Help Me Pick A Second Zaurus!

Well I took the plunge and bought a 5500 on ebay for $177.00 US. I also bought a 3 charger package, AC, DC and 4 AA charger for 35.00. I bought a body suit case from Extreme limits for 80.00 (it just looked so nice, I could not resist it). I then bought a screen protector for 12.00 from Brando in Hong Kong. For $304.00 US dollars, I have a complete pda system that is much more advanced than anything for a comparable price from Palm or the dark side.

Now I have to spent another few hours trying to figure out what to flash it too: Sharp's 3.13 or Cacko or ????? Oh, boy, too many options.

Hopefully, I won't have to buy another PDA for a few years. These units appear to be very well built.

Now I will make another post asking for suggestions on what to flash it too. I hope this is simple.

Thanks for all your help.

There's nothing wrong with the T5: it's a really nice unit and bluetooth works with no tweaking all the time. Bluetooth is a tad buggy on the 3100, but I finally figured out how to make it run when it does'nt want to.

The main attraction of using another Zaurus is:

-the keyboard: I rarely reply to email on my T5 unless I pull out the IR keyboard as using graffiti is too painfull for anything more than a short sentence.

-PDFs: pdfs are becoming, at an accellerated pace, the no. 1 means of document exchange. I noticed a major adoption by everyone in the last year, more so than any other year. One cannot view pdfs on any Palm unless you do a desktop conversion first. Dataviz is coming out with a native pdf viewer later this year for the Palm platform but it will still require conversion. It's not an instant read.

-KOPI: this PIM suite is far more advanced than anything on the Palm. Also, the idea (it's an idea as I have not tried it yet) to be able to have the identical data on my ubuntu laptop, my 3100 and my windows xp box is pretty cool. Synchronising the t5 with a linux laptop is buggy most of the time. For all I know , synching KOPI might be even more buggy.

Overall, the T5 is buggy with frequent resets. Still within acceptable tolerances of stability, but just on the border of being too buggy.

Thanks

Blinky.

Why the rush. Why not wait till the Nokia 700 comes out.  True Nokia has delayed it a bit but they say it will be out 4 quarter this year if I am not mistaken.  The fact that they delayed it for software reasons probable means that Nokia is interested in producing a quality consumer product.  The only bummer is that its not a Qtopia device, but lets keep our minds open as maybe the GUI they have will prove superior.

Wow, that is a sweet looking machine!
I think the main thing is that it has no keyboard. I can't stand "graffiti" type input, it's way too painful. Look forward to seeing reviews on it though. Pretty cool stuff.

Hello, I bought a 3100: what a thing of beauty! I now can truly live without my laptop when travelling.
I still use my Palm t5 for Pim duty and bluetooth email though, as the 3100 is just too big to stick in a pocket or a belt pouch. (I also use the 3100 with bluetooth and Wifi)

-I am looking for a T5 replacement.
-must be able to use a bluetooth card to download email
-must be much more compact than the 3100
-must be able to use KOPI PIM software
-must be able to use the basics like a spreadsheet etc...that is compatible with the 3100
-Must be linux...of course.

I am looking at the 5500 5600 6000 c760 c860 etc... but I am lost as I cannot actually hold them in my hands to see if buying one of these will make a major difference in portability.

Can anyone help me focus a on just one or 2 models. I saw the c760 at one place for about 300.00 bucks. Would this be a good choice? Is this a model that could work as a smaller 3100 for everyday PIM and bluetooth email use?

As a t5 replacement, bear in mind that I will be using it 1000 times a day. Not really doable with a 3100 as it's too big and heavy and I would not want to subject such a nice unit to so much abuse. My 3100 will be used in my hotel room for serious work only.

Thanks for any help.

My office desktop computer still on windows.

Thanks for the info, Stu. Actually, I had forgotten that the . before a file is hidden and I had also forgotten that the ls -a will bring them up...

WHERE IS THIS FILE: I CAN'T FIND IT ANYWHERE, THE ".profile file."

Once the packages have been installed add the following to the .profile file:
export LANGUAGE=C
export LC_ALL=C

You might also want to do the following
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=95887\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

You probably don't have one

So just make it or try putting the changes on .bash_profile or .bashrc

Note: in linux a . before a file name is used to make the file hidden. To see hidden files use ls -a rather than ls (sorry if you already knew this, just covering all bases)

I've installed these perl files and cannot find the file they are asking me to modify.

Before you install Perl do the following:
# su
# cd /home/root
# ln -s /usr/local usr

Then install the following packages:

    * libperl - [libperl_5.6.1_arm.ipk]
    * perl-base - [perl-base_5.6.1_arm.ipk]
    * perl5 - [perl_5.6.1_arm.ipk]

Once the packages have been installed add the following to the .profile file:
export LANGUAGE=C
export LC_ALL=C

Python / Question For Pythonites About Installing Python
« on: September 14, 2005, 09:57:56 pm »
Hello,

I want to install this program http://www.elsix.org/index.php?w=project&p=1220 in order to convert txt files to PDF. The program requires python and a bunch of files from reportlab.

Do I just install all these files: http://www.riverbankcomputing.co.uk/zaurus/download.php to have python running?

The program also requires the following files:
http://www.reportlab.org/downloads.html

I guess once I do more research and figure out how to install non-ipk files do you think it may work?

Is it that simple? Just figure out how to install these foreign files (non-ipk) and I'm off to the races converting txt files to pdf?

Thanks for any help. I'm a total newbie.

C1000/3x00 Hardware / Im A Linux And Zaurus Newbie..

I'm from Canada, Vancouver

Bought 3100 off Conics in Japan one month ago: fast shipping and NO duties, for some unknown reason.

Bought Socket BT card bought from Cdn company http://www.cendirect.com/  Awesome prices, awesome service, fast shipping on everything I have bought from them.

Bought dlink 660 off ebay in US for wifi: worked instantly with no configuration.

BT and gprs works like a charm with Rogers with socket bt card. (Took me a while to get it configured, but that's because I was not paying close enough attention to what I was doing and made some stupid config mistakes.)

This is my first Zaurus and I am not familiar with the 3000, so I cannot comment on whether the 3100 is worth the extra cost.

I'm using the stock rom and I am happy with it. I have no urge, yet, to change that.

Overall though, after being a Palm'er for 8 years, this unit is sweet. Strange that it's not more popular.
