I did the update from the settings app, chose the download / install from the pull-down.

Yes, it did take a while.

I concur:  WiFi power usage has improved.

Power usage doesn't seem improved for me. With no SIM fitted and wifi enabled, my gemini went from 100% charge to dodo dead in less than 20hrs while sat on my desk unused.
I'm dissapointed, but I'm done wasting time on this device.

For comparison on Android I get a full day of moderate 4G and Wifi usage out of my Gemini with usually over 50% battery left at the end of the day.  WiFi only and no use it would easily last more than 3 days so while I understand your frustration I would respectfully suggest the issue is the software rather than the device?

I get similar battery life to your Android from my Gemini using SF. I am not using push email and I tend to force close apps not in use, this may be the difference.
WiFi can affect battery if the signal is not solid. Also, batteries are not always the same over their lives. Depending on how they have been used, their ability to hold a charge can be damaged - I believe heat can be a problem here.

Gemini PDA - Sailfish OS / UK Keyboard in Sailfish 3
« on: March 21, 2019, 05:37:20 am »
Updating to 3.0.2.8 Oulanka will knock the UK keyboard back to US layout.

However, Andy Branson on Jolla forums has provided this fix:

 dconf write /desktop/lipstick-jolla-home/layout "'gb'"

should set the correct layout keyboard for UK hardware keyboard without having to directly edit any files.

Yes, physical keyboards are a good thing, but a poor effort with awkward buttons could  do damage to perceptions of physical keyboard pocketable devices and damage the market.

I obviously haven't tried this FX thing but from the photos it doesn't look too good.

Does anyone know if the flashing method is the same as for the Sailfish downloaded from Planet?

In particular the partition tool choices and the use of the extra sailfish files?

Thanks.

you can download it from this link: http://shop.jolla.com/downloads

It does look like http://support.planetcom.co.uk/partitionTool.html changed a bit.

I tried to install it using an old boot scatter file, and it works fine, but I am experiencing a different problem though: https://www.oesf.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=35739

Thanks, yes if you choose Commercial Sailfish from on the partition tool then the button sends you out to the Jolla shop - there are extra files to go into the image folder. I've installed it but it hasn't solved my email sending problem unfortunately. I've followed up your debian question, not much help though.

I have debian on boot 4 (hold both esc + silver)

neither old nor new version of debian boots after I downloaded the new linux image to my gemini.

I want to keep the new linux image for sailfish 3, but I dont get anything happening when trying to boot into debian:
if reuse the old debian image, the blue led just keeps shining, but nothing happens, If I use the "new" debian (Wed Dec 12 10:45:36 2018   a58c0d64312b6626a8bdb2178e1303e7) http://support.planetcom.co.uk/download/Li...uxFirmware.html
the gemini just turns of, or registers the escape button to go into recovery mode.

did anyone else have similar experiences?

I did install Debian today, I was experimenting because of a different problem that I haven't solved yet. I installed Android->Recovery->Debian->None

I used the Planet instructions and online partition tool and downloaded everything fresh. Debian booted and ran well, it's the first time I've used it and I was impressed apart from the lack of connectivity.

And the price of Cosmo in UK£ continues to edge downward, if the exchange rate allows the £ price to drop below £400 (which is well below early bird price) then I will bite.

Gemini PDA - General Discussion / Planet seems to have started something...

Yes, I think the big advantage if Gemini having a physical keyboard is the Psion style keyboard feel which makes all the difference between a practical working device and what this FX thing looks like, just a grid of buttons.

Also it looks like an Android thing and I don't use Android.

I'm pleased this has happened and will be watching the reviews carefully. Currently I am having problems with SMTP on Sailfish Community for Gemini and want to see that solved before I move on.

I'm not that bothered about Android apps on Sailfish, I think everything I need is covered by Jolla apps (or would be if I could send email). The only non Jolla app I have used is terminal.

Gemini PDA - Sailfish OS / 3.0.1.14
« on: February 24, 2019, 03:02:57 am »
I had started with 3.0.1.13 image supplied by Planet. Found that the developer mode would not switch on, nor could I add most Jolla store apps (ncluding Mail).

So I took advice to do the in place upgrade:

ssu re 3.0.1.14
devel-su
ssu re 3.0.1.14
version --dup
pkcon refresh

This allowed me to install apps from Jolla store and the developer mode became available.

Now I can't send email from the mail app. I cant go back into accounts and edit the smtp settings (imap and pop3 is ok)
I didn't test these in 3.0.1.13 because couldn't get the mail app from store.

Would appreciate any solution to the mail problem.

Thnaks.

I'd also be interested to know if people would want to have things split so that maybe a stretch root and a buster root are available with a debianhome that they both mount so that you can share user files between os's? (could possibly also extend to get sfos/kali to mount the same root?) Or is it best to keep things clean and just allow users to mount the other homes as desired, there are some bits of software that change their file formats between versions and so for example Telegram Desktop gets confused when you launch the stretch version after launching the buster one (you just have to login/2fa again).

I chose sailfish for all three  positions on the online tool and all space to linux, zero for Android and the Gemini boots to sailfish, runs sailfish and there’s no Android there spoiling the party.

If you happen to be buying in UK£, the Cosmo is now as cheap as it was on early bird due to exchange rate movement with the $.

Over the next couple of months it could go either way, Cosmo could be way cheaper in UK than early bird or otherwise.

EU-suppliers selling goods to EU-customers need to deliver at least 2 years warranty.
The devil may be in the details. When backing a crowdfundig project, you aren't strictly buying something. You are funding a project in the hope that they will give you something in return at a later date, which may feel like buying, but should Planet Computers fold, they probably wouldn't legally owe their backers anything. They would legally owe money to those who bought things in their web shop, but didn't get it delivered (though it probably wouldn't matter in practice, as a folded company typically doesn't HAVE any money left to cover such debts anyway).

Also, the two year EU rules are kind of weak. If a problem develops within the six first months, it is assumed the problem existed when you received the goods, unless the trader can prove otherwise. After six months, however, YOU must prove that you didn't somehow cause the fault yourself, which for anything beyond obvious cases, may be impossible. As a "one year warranty" sometimes extends the period during which the trader assumes you didn't break the thing yourself from six to twelve months, it may still improve your rights during month seven to twelve, after which regular EU rules continues to apply for another twelve months.

Yes, the 1 year warranty is a goodwill extension of the statutory 6 months you get under EU law. The two years is for defects that the buyer can prove existed at time of manufacture. This two years in the UK is 6 years.   Not illegal at all.

I don't know why people are complaining about the extending early bird deal, what does it matter to them?  If Planet ship Cosmo in (mostly) backer order they they will be first in the queue to get the ropey first production run ones
