Zaurus - pdaXrom / How To Configure Network In Pdaxrom?
« on: October 04, 2005, 07:54:21 am »
Hi all, I've just got myself a belkin usb-ethernet adapter. It works fine, pegasus drivers are loaded ok and i can ping things on the LAN. I did:

ifconfig inet eth0 up 192.168.254.254 netmask 255.255.255.0

this gets things working at least on my LAN. i guess i need to use route to get access thru my router to the whole net.

but, i was just wondering whether there is an easier way......? The lan/wifi settings program that comes with pdaxrom seems to modify /etc/sysconfig/network but i am not sure how to make use of these settings.

so i'd just like some pointers. thanks

C1000/3x00 Hardware / Best Wireless Lan Card For 3100 ?
« on: September 27, 2005, 03:24:47 pm »
Hi all. Time to order an 802.11 card so that I can use my 3100 for email and a bit of web which is what I got it for!

I've been looking through these forums and I see that almost all the cards work. So I was wondering which is the best? I've seen a few cards on ebay, like ambicom, symbol, and some others. can't seem to find dlink.

Anyway, i was wondering what is best for signal strength, reliability, smallness (not blocking headphones, stylus) or other criteria?

TIA. Emil

Hi all, I want to change the rom on my 3100. (I know I must only use 3100 specific ones.) My question is:

As far as the Z is concerned is there any difference between an mmc and an sd card? I only ask because I want to flash but I only have an mmc card handy. It works fine in the sd slot, and I've read that there is no difference on the Z anyway, as it doesn't use the SD's DRM "features".  But flashing is a risky business, so I just want to make sure that I can do it with an mmc card!!

Thanks,
Emil

I don't know about the UK, but I do know that pricejapan declares Zauruses as "electronic dictionaries" with quite low values, which makes it less likely that you'll have to pay much in tax.

Hmm, looking at my invoice I see that's what pricejapan did. It says its an electronic dictionary (technically true I guess, but not the whole truth) but then they list its value as 21000 yen, which is not true - it should be 56000.

Well, I didn't ask them to do that so I don't think I've done anything wrong. From what I understand even if it had been described properly, the VAT man is not usually interested as its still small fry as far  as they are concerned, unless they are having a very bad day.

If you're concerned about this, order from trisoft. Probably what I should have done, but I was tempted by the low price! It feels a bit dodgy though, like ordering viagra or something.....

« on: September 23, 2005, 06:11:14 pm »
UPDATE! I've managed to edit the settings file and reboot, by using a windows computer to upload the terminal program, and using vi to edit the settings file.

I'm going to type up the instructions hopefully with screenshots!!

Hi thanks. But is there a way to do it without changing the software? I want to change that eventually, but just for now i was hoping I could just edit /home/zaurus/Settings/locale.conf ? all i need is a terminal then i can fire up vi or whatever, change it, surely? then figure out how to reboot...

Hi all, just got my 3100 delivered from pricejapan. It looks great but I need to convert it to english!

I thought this would be straightforward, as I read this:
"Launch the terminal and change the /home/zaurus/Settings/locale.conf file to use 'en' instead of 'ja'."

But I can't figure out how to launch the terminal! (or reboot for that matter.)

Could I do this if I get it connected to my PC? I haven't managed to get the USB connection to work yet either, I'm using Ubuntu but I've got a PC with Windows if necessary.

Please help, i'm itching to use my zaurus!!!!

TIA. Emil

« on: September 21, 2005, 09:23:55 pm »
Hi all, I'm in the UK, amazon.com are doing the SA70 for $25 but they won't ship outside the US!
It's available for 50 euros here:
http://www.handheld-linux.com/wiki.php?page=EA-70S

so what's everyone else in the UK doing? 240-110 adapter? using a cheap charger? (my nokia phone charger says its 5.7 v)

I realise this has been discussed before... but couldn't find any discussion of using a 240-110v ac transformer.

C1000/3x00 Hardware / Ipod Hard Disc On Zaurus
« on: September 21, 2005, 07:07:46 pm »

Archos has. Their PMA430 PDA has a 1.8" 30GB harddisk (like the ipod). It runs Linux and Qtopia. Why this doesn't get more attention on this forum is beyond me, considering it can run a good portion of Zaurus apps. The screen is kind of lacking with only a 320x240 resolution [snip]

The 320x240 screen was a show stopper for me, otherwise I'd have bought one. Apparently also some people have had cracked cases. I think its still a "beta" product.... But with a decent screen I'd be willing to try one out.

More on topic, is there a definite reason why ipod hard disks can't be hacked to fit into the Z 3x00? If the pin out is different would it be possible to make an adaptor?

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to order from pricejapan instead! They are a bit cheaper, $668 for the C3100 once all s&h etc added in. Chase were $729.

I'm gonna buy a 3100 off them.  eBay feedback seems fine, so we'll see. I'll let people know what happens. pricejapan seems cheaper but i can find less info about success stories with them.  - Emil
