Astro Slide - Linux / Got the firmware dumped. Ready to break the phone!
« on: December 07, 2022, 11:43:22 am »
I have managed after some head banging to dump my Astro firmware on my M1 Mac. With a backup in hand I am now ready to start messing with things.
I would probably be fine with a VM running Linux on the device if it ran at full speed. Do I need to unlock it to be able to run a VM?

Cosmo Communicator - Linux / Docker install causes unrecoverable NMI

If i install docker on the Cosmo it NMI reboots during the software installs. Not sure why guess it's a missing library I've followed the instructions from here selecting the arm64 build.

Unfortunately I can't capture the log files as i am unable to restart the debian image once it fails and have to flash the image back.

I have had this running on an ODRIOD before so i know it should work.

The ODROID was, I expect, running a Linux rather than an android kernel.  The permissions on Android are essentially single user oriented and the root account isn't just trusted to be able to do anything.

If we can turn the Android off in the kernel and keep a functioning machine (I don't need more than wifi when in Linux mode) then we'll be able to use docker.  There is no port I know of docker to Android which works.

This is what some people want, but it is useless to me.  Termux is a more useful linux environment on Cosmo than Gemian is for me.  Yes, Docker doesn't work but I don't expect it to and it isn't laggy or with widgets which fill the useful screen area.

Unfortunately I have a lot on at the moment and can't spend the time on this.  I suspect that we may be close to being able to run a standard kernel on the old Gemini.  That is probably where I will put my effort when I have time and keep this machine as a really decent Android.

(I look forward to trying the Dosbox version and comparing.)

Thanks for sharing. interesting, and nostalgic.

Oh wow, running the web browser emulation in Firefox on the Cosmo looks amazing once it has taken a couple of minutes to boot. It's a shame that the keyboard presses repeat forever or it might be usable.

I was going to add that when something similar happened to my Gemini it was because it wasn't charging. I have noticed that sometimes the Cosmo will trip a charger requiring the charger itself to be unplugged from the mains and re-plugged before it will charge again.  Probably some difference between PD and PE3.

Cosmo Communicator - Android / eSIM wallet crashes after QR code scan
« on: January 02, 2020, 01:45:00 am »
I had to disable TLS certificate checks.  It seems that the wallet is missing a number of root certificates in its trust store.

Cosmo Communicator - CoDi / CODI update
« on: December 11, 2019, 08:48:12 pm »
I just went through the same pain.  The same combination of things did not work for me.  Swapping settings while in the flash program, not touching the second screen or fingerprint sensor seemed to eventually make it work for me.  You know it is working when a yellow bar starts progressing slowly across the screen.  This took about 30 mins for the resources and then it does a second stage where it is flashing the firmware.  Don't abort before the second stage.  Flashing said successful afterwards but it failed to reset the cover display (it still seemed to be showing 'Hello I am Cosmo' when it wanted to be able to talk to the display.  Be persistent is all I can suggest.

Cosmo Communicator - Android / ESIM settings lost and found
« on: December 03, 2019, 07:31:48 pm »
This morning a funny thing happened.  I had previoiusly configured my Cosmo to use an esim but when I opened it to use it outside the wifi coverage the first time I found I had no cell bar or 4G indicator.  esim was still enabled in cosmo settings but I went to the esim wallet and it was empty - no error, just my esim had gone.

I got the activation code again and scanned it but the wallet crashed which I remembered from my first attempt seemed to mean that it could not communicate with the chip.

I used the Save and Exit button which disabled the chip, then I reenabled.  Still no sim.  Repeated the process and the sim returned.

I noted that after the sim was displayed, I no longer had the save and exit button.

I will try to see what causes it to lose the SIM.  I had replaced the SD card and launcher as well as done several restarts without paying much attention as wifi was working.

Cosmo Communicator - Android / ESIM Authentication Failure (UK, EE network)

The eSIM Wallet app allows you to forcibly disable this by toggling [dots] -> Settings -> Network -> Bypass TLS authentication -- perhaps this would be worth a shot?

It worked for me for Airalo in the US.  I too had a crashing eSIM wallet until I disabled and re-enabled the eSIM chip in the wallet.  I had expected to use an eSIM and had turned it on before usng the eSIM wallet, this seems to have skipped some important setup and prevented me completing the registration.

Cosmo Communicator - General Discussion / Verizon
« on: November 29, 2019, 08:03:39 pm »
I purchased the Verizon Edition because I wanted to use the device with my existing Verizon account.  It did not work as the ID was not recognized as a supported Verizon device.  I suspect that certification is not yet completed, that they were hoping that it would happen before the devices arrived in the USA.  Has anyone else tried to connect to Verizon?  What was your experience?

Gemini PDA - Android / eSim registration fails mutual auth
« on: August 22, 2019, 12:47:07 am »
Inspired by someone asking about esim, I thought I would try it and it says it fails mutual auth when I try to add with QR code  Trust Anchor for Cert Psth not found.

Any ideas?

It seems borked because the update check tells the Gemini to download this missing file http://flare02.iofota.com/EASTAEON_FTPRO16...90429094213.zip
That appears to be a CloudFlare served Chinese hosted origin server.  The update has been removed now, hopefully we will be able to update this week...

My advice to Davide would be to upload the file to S3 and put it behind Cloudfront CDN. This isn’t the sort of thing you want to serve from a computer under a desk.

I think that there will be a lot of unhappy folk. The OTA Update only works for non-rooted, all partition Android. I am amazed that they’re are enough of those to cause server issues - unless everyone repartitioned to stock to update to Oreo as I did?

I would love to see PD. Being able to charge my Mac from the same port I am using for network and hdmi is great.

On a Mediatek device that would be, "Pump Express".  It all depends on the CPU & device manufacturer and their licensed proprietary method they own or license.

Fortunately later versions of PE are PD compliant.  I just want one of those to be used.
