Gemini PDA - General Discussion / RiscOS on Gemini?
« on: October 27, 2018, 02:18:59 pm »
I used RiscOS as a development workstation for an ARM-based settop box in the late 90's. I remember it as being very fast for its time, although the UI was a little weird. It was at the time where Mac, Windows, and X Windows did things like window sizing and copy/paste just differently enough that if you had to switch between machines, your head hurt. I may still have the workstation out in the garage from the project.

I'm not sure how suited to the Gemini it would be --- it was very mouse-centric and wanted a big screen. Looking at the source code might be fun, though.

Gemini PDA - Hardware / Charging the Gemini with a non-Gemini cable ?

I'm guessing that your car USB port is a low-current charging port. The cable shouldn't be the issue.

Gemini PDA - General Discussion / 4G Gemini as main device ?

EDIT: p.s., the other big draw is the free Data SIMs. You can have up to 10 and they just use your shared Data, so I like being able to use multiple devices. That's a huge plus for me.

I forgot to mention that part. Most other US carriers charge between $10 and $20 for each additional device --- and for me, that added up very, very quickly. With Fi, I've just got a few and can pop them in and out of devices I'm using. My Gemini started online that way, and I only later added a voice plan, because with the Fi dialer you can make voice calls over data anyway.

I think you still need to live in the US to actually sign up.

The pricing's not as competitive as it used to be, unless one of two things is true --- either you travel internationally from the US regularly, or your usage really varies month to month. It's nice that you only pay for what you use, and on my international trips it's great that I can use data without worrying about roaming fees. A two-week trip to New Zealand with AT&T cost me nearly $500 for a half-gig of data in roaming fees, including overage. A similar two-week trip to Central America didn't do anything to my bill, and I used my usual 5GB.

I had to do a search on Google Fi as I had never heard of it. Interesting, I don't think it's available here but even if it was it seems very expensive compared to a normal data plan.

Gemini PDA - Android / Apps:Databases

I remember HanDBase! I had no idea they were still around. Thanks for the pointer!

I haven't used too many databases in Android, but the one I've been using since the PalmOS days is DDH Software's HanDBase.  They have a version for Android and iPhones/iPad.  My PalmOS databases can still sync with Android and Windows client.  I think you can even have it sync with MS Access, ODBC, etc.  It's not free, but is pretty solid for my use.  They have demos for different platforms on their site:

Gemini PDA - Android / Which Office App to use?
« on: July 25, 2018, 09:26:53 pm »
I have years of crap in Office crap, so for that I use Microsoft Office for Android and OneDrive, and it works really well. For my newer stuff, I switched to the Google suite about three years ago (disclaimer, I work there now, but don't get anything for saying this!) and am quite happy with that for the newer stuff. Really, I don't think you can go wrong with either of them --- if you've got legacy docs in one format or the other, just go with that. Otherwise, if you've got a preference, go with that, and if you don't, I'd urge the Google stuff; it's a little lighter weight, I think.

I use the built-in PDF reader, but I just installed Adobe, because I want to be able to mark up PDFs and I don't really like Squid's UI.

Oooh! I will definitely have to check out Aide. That sounds really cool! Thanks.

Gemini PDA - Hardware / FM receiver in the Gemini...

Does anyone know what chipset it is, or other details on an API for accessing the radio tuner?

Works on the T-Mobile side of Project Fi. Does not roam to Sprint or other Fi carriers, which is as expected, it's not a Fi device.

This looks pretty cute.

RFO BASIC runs with an editor right on the device, and has a lot of hooks into the Android runtime stuff for things like networking, sound, and graphics. It's a semi-structured version of the language, it looks like.

My BASIC days are largely over, although I may dig out my 101 BASIC Computer Games book (or however many there were) out of the attic and port some over.

What other programming languages (besides what you find in termux!) have people come across that they like?

Gemini PDA - Android / 'am' command?

It could be that the Termux home directory is in the Android package`s file space, which would only be visible to Termux regardless of file modes, if I recall correctly

Gemini PDA - Android / Static IP
« on: June 29, 2018, 01:46:46 pm »
I've not seen that done with Android, although there might be a solution if you decide to root your Gemini.

Do you have control of your DHCP server? Grabbing the MAC address and having it serve the same IP over DHCP may be the easiest way. I do that with a number of devices at home.

Until then, has anyone successfully assigned a static address to eth0?

Google Inbox and the stock Google Calendar app. Can't wait to see the Agenda app, but if it doesn't sync to Google Calendar, I'm sunk.

Came across Memento Database (https://mementodatabase.com) today, and it works great for creating custom databases on the Gemini! Can sync back to Google Sheets, which is nice. Took me more time to figure out what fields I wanted in my database than it did to put it together.

(No affiliation with the outfit that publishes it.)

Apparently they make a Windows version, too, if you need to get stuff back to a PC.

How do you toggle the virtual keyboard option? I may be seeing this too.
