Cosmo Communicator - Android / Mobile data

Ok worked it out.  UI is very bad, and default settings (that you can't seem to access right now) have the second/eSIM as the data sim!

Turning mobile data off, then on again, and say "Yes please change the SIM used" fixed it.

Though my thoughts on this device are a little soured as my "S" key keeps getting stuck and the "C" key is not very responsive

The stuck keys were a problem on the Gemini as well. A quick fix if you're bold enough is to carefully pry the key cap out, and stick a tiny bit of sponge (a corner off a kitchen sponge will do) underneath.

Cosmo Communicator - General Discussion / Scam?

Guys ... I ordered HDMI cable on Planet Website on 4th Jan 2020, order was confirmed and they generated internal tracking which is not a postal tracking. Since than, there has been no update. Went to PayPal and tried to call Planet from PayPal and the number is disconnected. I wrote and email and they did not bother to respond.

Why and what they gain from such an attitude? Are they bankrupt or what? This gives a strong sense of unethical business and sham, shady practices if not an outright scam.

I am clueless what will happen to my order.

They're a very small company and I wouldn't be surprised if it's just one person handling all the logistics. They're probably trying to get all the existing Cosmo orders sent from China first before the Chinese New Year break. Chinese New Year starts on 25 January so they'll probably catch up with the other stuff then.

I really wish people would stop being dramatic and making statements here like ARE THEY BANKRUPT????? We don't want this to turn into the Indiegogo comments section.

Cosmo Communicator - CoDi / Cover Display Subforum?
« on: January 21, 2020, 09:49:58 am »
PC should just open source the code for the cover display and the community might come up with a better way to update it. It's a mess now tbh. Mine's currently dead, and others on Indiegogo have reported that it takes 10-20 tries with a voodoo combination of factors to finally succeed.

Cosmo Communicator - General Discussion / Hidden Wifi SSID
« on: January 20, 2020, 03:36:40 pm »
Anyone having trouble connecting to hidden wifi networks? Mine won't connect until I make the SSID visible, then it immediately disconnects when I hide the SSID again. Never had this problem with the Gemini.

Gemini PDA - Hardware / Quick Charge

Gemini supports a Mediatek fast-charge technology called Pump Express. The original Gemini box contains a special  mains charger that allows recharging your Gemini in a very short time. You might be able to charge your Gemini using other chargers, but please bear in mind that only a Pump Express compatible charger will allow fast charging a Gemini.

You must also use a compatible USB cable.

Gemini PDA - General Discussion / Flashing hell
« on: August 04, 2018, 05:33:38 pm »
True, that. After going through a few rounds of nerve wracking will-it-or-won't-it-flash, I've given up for now.

I mean the Gemini still has value as an Android phone with a keyboard, but that's it.

I remain hopeful, but I fear that the chances of ever seeing a fully functional Gemini running Sailfish 3 (or any other non-Android OS) are verrrrrrry slim.

If you set Linux to be the default operating system, you don't ever have to boot into Android and no Google services will ever be activated. I guess Planet just decided to build the drivers, etc. into the Android image because that would be the most widely used OS, and due to the constraints of the MediaTek SoC.

Tbh if this is because you're that paranoid about Googledroid, you should just get rid of the Gemini because MediaTek has probably baked all sorts of backdoors/vulnerabilities into the SoC.

Thanks for the clarification about your offer to send the unit back first. It's too bad that Planet hasn't replied, but hopefully it's because they're trying to troubleshoot the problem first, not that they were deliberately ignoring you. I was actually near one of their meetups and had I known earlier about your issues I could've gone and asked them about it!

I hope they eventually do right by you and send you a replacement.

We're not defending Planet. I've had issues with my Gemini and I'm not entirely happy with them either. We're just saying that you have to be reasonable.

I'm sure if you sent your unit back they'd replace it, but you can't expect them to send you a new one first. Even Apple doesn't do that anymore, let alone a tiny company like Planet.

And if it takes two months to arrive in Brazil, what's a few more weeks to send it back?

From his previous posts, I think he didn't want to wait for it to be repaired, but wanted a new one in exchange, i.e. he was expecting Planet to ship him a new Gemini, before even sending the faulty unit back.

Gemini PDA - General Discussion / Dual sim options
« on: July 16, 2018, 04:59:14 pm »
Short answer - no.

Long answer - maybe.

Easiest option: your carrier should have a service called a 'virtual SIM' that basically provisions a SIM card with two different numbers. This obviously won't work for you if your aim is to add another physical SIM card, e.g. traveling.

There are dual sim adaptors that let you use two physical SIM cards, but in my experience they are fragile and finicky. The Gemini also seems to have pre-reserved the second SIM menu for the eSIM, so that might be a complicating factor.

Gemini PDA - Linux / My Gemini is now useless Video Problem
« on: July 12, 2018, 12:39:55 pm »
So faithful to the Psion Series 5 that they've even reproduced the infamous ribbon issue

(The Psion 5 had a ribbon cable from the main body to the display that would get loose or even break after prolonged use. Not reassuring in the least to see that the Gemini seems to have the same problem...)

Gemini PDA - Android / Gmail spell checking and security updates
« on: July 09, 2018, 09:37:50 am »

My second issue is that the security Android security patch level is still from November last year. I’m a bit annoyed about this as I specifically asked Planet Computers about this before ordering and the reply I received implied  regular security updates. I’m not too bothered about being on the latest version of Android, but really want the latest security patches. Having a device 7 months behind on security updates is pretty flaky in 2018. I have sent a follow up email to Planet Computers about this, but I was wondering if anyone has been given any info about security updates?

I think devices from the second batch, before the Great Bricking Brickoff, had security patches from February 2018. That was fairly up-to-date, at the time of shipping.

Then for some reason, they rolled back the patch level all the way back to November 2017 with the latest firmware update.

Hopefully this means that they're just experiencing teething issues and we'll get back on the regular update schedule soon.

Gemini PDA - Android / OTA and dual boot

Does anyone know if the latest firmware is OTA upgradeable, and if it has the latest Android security updates? Or is it just the previous version bundled with the new partition tool.

Gemini PDA - Linux / Gemini Bricked! [Solved]
« on: June 30, 2018, 03:02:20 am »
It *might not* actually be bricked, just that after the flash failed, it got stuck on a black screen until the battery ran down.

Have you tried plugging it into a wall charger for a few hours, then trying the various recovery mode button combos?
