SIMpad forum / Where To Find 2009.x Angstrom-images?
« on: June 29, 2011, 04:43:22 am »
Hi.
I just resurrected my Simpad, and flashed some 2007.12 images according to
http://opensimpad.org/index.php/Linux#Angstroem

but there are also some newer ones (with sound) mentioned:
"If you use a 2009.X dev image, you must not set init in the linuxargs."
where do i find these images?

is there way to see all available images?
If i go up the directories from
http://www.angstrom-distribution.org/relea.../images/simpad/
to
http://www.angstrom-distribution.org/releases/
it is not accessible. There i would expect a list of all releases...

Thanks,
thomas

SIMpad forum / Killed My Swisscom Cl4 Using Jtag.

jtag should work i guess, maybe u can find a pcb rev. nr. on the mailboard and compare with some available pics...
i looked through my photos, but did not see a pcb rev.
i guess it is somewhere.

reuse the display for sth else than a simpad
is quite impossible i think, displays have proprietary driver electronics, no standard there, so it is quite an engineering task to use it other than in a simpad.

hi mr_nice
and others

well, C.Martin is open to all options, from leaving the site there, and just give someone access to hand over the domainname, and build sth. new whereever.

I think for starters it would be easyest to work with what is there, especially because there was not much respond on new ideas, so why restart instead of reactivate?

i have an answer, but maybe this could be done in typo3 too:
make the website more open to members, more like the wiki.
let me compare the two systems:

current state:
one(few) admin(s)
----------------------
+all info is consistant, only one source
+inconsistant info is being consolidated before published
+no spaming, double information, low quality entries

-all work relies on one person, all dead if person leaves
-additional work to consolidate inconsistant info

Community-Proposal:
members can get different levels of possibilities to contribute
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
+more likely to bring all different info in one place, eg.guylhem, till...
+more info in general, because it is easyer to contribute
+more stable through time, as people join and leave

-possible quality loss because lost control
-maybe needs super-admin to compensate quality loss

the wiki adresses some of these needs, but it lacks some features.
what i think would be good is
-a gallery-system for HW-Pics Screenshots etc.
-a downloads-section where people could put their files
(maybe just in form of links to their own storage)
-facility to write articles, with html-possibilities

SIMpad forum / Feedback / Bug Reports On New Images

The suspend button is known to not work under Opie, and this is probably easy to fix (but I don't have time for this yet). Should work under GPE, though.
no suspend under gpe, your newest image. so it is something else...
maybe a hw problem, unereased/defect flash... (is there a tool to test that? bootldr command? JTAG maybe? i have the port)
that could explain a lot, because i always had strange irregularities, back since the first 0.8.1 images, like problems after the first flashing, resolved after a 2nd try etc.

Quote
User interface issues (in Opie or GPE) are probably cross-platform and should be reported to the respective projects:
http://opie-bugs.oszine.de/ (Opie)
http://handhelds.org/~bugzilla/ (GPE)
ok, to report the translation bug i go to bugzilla, reprt bug, i get an enormous list of "products". i have no clue if it is it gpe-dm gpe-conf-de... i am on an alien planet there...
i opened an account, and had a look at it, but i think that is really not the tool for me.

i think, i should be able to post the problem somewhere, and then someone who knows the system decides wether i am a damn fool, or if it is sth. to look into.
i hope you understand my point?

also, to clarify my first posts question,
your images, you write are test images, is this meant like betatesting, so u want me as user to test it, and maybe report something?

if there is any point to it, would be happy to do something like that, but for now, i am completely standing in the dark...
i miss a notification about new images, maybe what is new on them, etc.

see, i am not demanding something, i just try to ask, if my limited time/knowledge could be of any help.
but even the answers seem to presume more background knowledge than i have.
hope someone gets my point

SIMpad forum / Feedback / Bug Reports On New Images

to clarify, for example here is what i found about florians image:

calibrate:
the crosshairs drawing deletes itselfes when they move from bottom right to left.

German Desktop:
in german, the folder "Utilities" is called "Einstellungen", should maybe be "Utilities, same as in english.

the app launcher in the menubar is missing, if i try to add it, it appears for less than one second, and disappears
(if i log in english, i have to add the launcher, and then it works)

Suspend:
the suspend button can wake the pad up, but not suspend it.

Suspend2:
"suspend" from the app launcher won't work (only if logged in with german)

ps: i have seen the handhelds.org bugzilla, but i think ppl like me better don't use it?

SIMpad forum / Feedback / Bug Reports On New Images

I recently tried different new images, the test-images from fredyd, and today one from florian boor he posted about on the mailing-list.

if someone is interested - i'm just uploading a new GPE/Familiar based image for
the Simpad SL4 to this location:
http://handhelds.org/~florian/simpad/gpe-i...10.rootfs.jffs2

After Koen added the APM fix for the Xserver suspend is working properly.
Wireless netwoking (using the orinoco_cs driver) works.
The image includes latest GPE bits which are close to the 2.7 release as well as
 gaim and Sylpheed.

Is there any point to give feedback about these images?
eg. bugs i notice?

Is there a bug tracker or something one should use, or should i post here?

Most things will be about GPE or OPIE, so should i use these forums?

SIMpad forum / Simpad Bootloader 'load Root' Problem
« on: November 15, 2005, 02:13:22 pm »
well, i have an sl4...
but if i remember right, the new bootloader, (hh.org, the one u installed with the image blupdater.img), only works on 32mb flash devices, u should find something about it, if u read all the way through the old forum.
i also think, most jffs2 images are bigger than 16mb, so how could they possibly fit?
maybe if u use

http://devernay.free.fr/hacks/opensimpad/2...21.rootfs.jffs2

if i am right, and only 32mb models work properly with the hh.org bootloader, then u have to go back to the old Siemens-BL, see the wiki on opensimpad.org for that.

the best image for me so far (mainly used as webpad) was the 0.8.1-1 anyways, but i did not test the newest ones on devernay...

so the first question is
what do people mean by restart the project...

well, i as a user (non-coder -builder -...) see the website, and there is nothing new, not even info about where new things are going on.

So what i mean is mainly restart/update the website, in whatever needed way.

i think things like
-link to this forum
-links to new images (maybe also test images?)
-update pages like about, contact...
-maybe have a login for users, then they could ex. add pictures to galleries like screenshots, hardware...

i do websites using mambo/joomla, but i there was someone familiar with typo3, i think the same things are possible...

i hope ppl have some constructive input

Hi all
after a lot of trouble creating an account, and not finding time to think of my simpad, i finally made it here...
just after i first got my pad and was getting into it, the activities on opensimpad.org faded away, but it looked to me, as there were always some people working on it, but they seemed to be spread all over.
As i read through here, i think some activity is back in the project, and guylhem is interested in bringing it back to live again.
from the MMCthread:
Quote
BTW, what about restarting more officially the opensimpad project?

I'd like to see my kernel in the opensimpad project, until we or someone else finds some time to work on 2.6

Guylhem

also, a while ago chris martin  wrote on the simpad-general maillist about handing over the domain to someone else.

...
Also, if someone is interested in taking over the opensimpad.org domain
I could have it transfered. It would be good if someone working in the
project could take care of the webpage.
Just drop me a mail if your interested.
  Regards,
 Chris Martin

Now, i have no skills in programming/compiling etc. for the project, but i think i could help bring up the website again.
i have (slightly dusty)skills in electronics-engineering,
(my pad has an external jtag port, and i would like to add BT and MMC)
and i work partly as webdesigner.

I have a lot of ideas what to do there, but as i wrote, i am more of a user, so i'd like to know what others think of it?
what should the website be good for?
(filebase?wiki?let users write articles?)...
