Hi there,

very nice pic pelrun

I once started a thread with a similar question (pelrun might remember...):

Android / General Question

Hi speculatrix,

thanks for the information!

I just read the short story you pointed at, in another thread:

five problems with google android:

http://unqualified-reservations.blogspot.c...le-android.html
Nice article  !

Am i right, when i say, that all the goldfish stuff in the android diffs for zauri kernel could also be left out (because these are only virtual drivers for the emulator)?

In other words, when i make sure that android will find its system interface on a platfrom, it'll be ready to run...
So basically only dirty hacks to the device's kernel will be needed

Correct me if i'm wrong!!

Android / General Question

Hi,

i got a simple and maybe dumb question  :

Is the goldfish swimming inside the zauri or does android run native using an abstraction layer?

back on topic!
the android SDK is now available:
http://code.google.com/android/

lots of pictures and stuff:
http://www.engadget.com/2007/11/12/googles...-now-available/

oh, and a HUGE bounty for writing stuff: "The Android Developer Challenge will award $10 million to developers who build great apps for Android"

i just made a diff between android and vanilla kernel, and...
... discovered goldfish   .

Goldfish is the virtual arm platform that may be started in the emulator (QEMU) to see your applications running.

I thought could be of interest. Enjoy!

Hi,

Quote from: sean
i would also like to see my pad runnin the tux, btw how the heck do you get this thing apart !!!!

Nice to see, that there are still some people playing around with the pad   .

To answer Sean's question, i'd like to quote a post i made at hpcfator in the hardware section:

Quote
There are four TORX (size 6) screws at the backside of the pad. The screws are hidden behind some plastic caps. You might take a small metal drill to get the caps out of the holes. Of course warranty is gone afterwards.

Additionally the bezel is fixed with some kind of snap-in brackets. So you might release them with some tight pressure after removing the screws!

You might have a look at this picture. Unfortunaly i got no photo from the bezel itself but it shows the pad from the front after lifting off the front bezel.
You might see the screws holes in every corner, so please release them first

Here is the link to the post at the forum of hpcfactor.com.

SIMpad forum / Broken T-sinus Pad :(
« on: September 11, 2007, 06:51:26 pm »
Hi Charles,

Quote
I can not believe, but I have found mainboard for my simpad !!
But its the weakest one, from CL4.
So I wonder about moving ram from working CL4 to broken T-Sinus 'cause I suppose the problem is about the ram (or pcb - but I wish not  ).
However I am affraid of destroing it while (de)soldering chips ( I can get hot air fortunately).
On the other hand I can move needed chips from T-sinus to cl4 to support PCMCIA.

Which way would You suggest to chose?

It's important for me, so please help me  .
Regards. Charles.

i hope you did not destroy your hardware already. Desolder components is not trivial, but of course i'm not aware of your skills   .
Perhaps there's another way to rescue your old pad, because i not sure if your hardware is really broken.
I once did a lot of investigation on the pad.
At this time i had some long JTAG sessions to read the complete content out of the flash ROMs of my pad   .

So i don't know what really happened to your pad, but i think some parts of your flash got corupted during reprogramming. I know that there's a tricky mechanism on these pads to restore the orignal bootloader. See opensimpad.org for details.
Try this first.

There's also some part of flash that is used for serial number, image version etc. (not sure if someone really found out how this section looks like).
My suggestion will be to flash the hole image again, using JTAG. So this will be 16MByte raw bin file and it will take long time, but maybe the original settings could be restored this way. If you like to check this i may give one of these files to you   .

Hi folks,

anyone seen this already. These guys plan to build up their own linux phone called myphone   .
There is also an interesting collection of hardware parts that could be useful for similar projects, e.g. pocketpenguin.
So maybe dablitz&Co. should have a look at this page   .

Hi there,

i just stumbled over this series of pics.
Though it will hardly ever run with linux OS, it's a pretty smart part of electronics   .

SIMpad forum / Simpad 2.6 Kernel Development
« on: July 02, 2007, 11:52:10 am »
Hi mister_data,

thanks for the hint.
You're right, i started working on the 2.6 kernel implementation for the skeye pad.
Some parts are similar to the simpad (e.g CS3), other's are not (e.g. graphic)  .

At least the simpad patches will help me to navigate through the kernel and you helped me to navigate the web   !

If you are interested in the ongoing of the 2.6 development please check this site [1]. It takes too much time to keep it in sync with this forum.

i know you're in lack of time. But let me ask one question   .
Is there any simple .gz package i may grab to have quick look into the complete patch?

Doesn't matter if it is a pre-copy of the OE stuff or something like that!

Edit: I found something at [a href=\"http://opensimpad.org/images/7/7a/SIMpad-Kernel-2.6.patch.gz]opensimpad[/url]

If you got a newer one, tell me!

Thnx

Hi there,

as you see, i can't stop posting   .

GPE environment is now running on the pad (bit slow though).

Grab the package, unpack it, copy all files to a CF-card, take your pad, start linexec, wait...

Cheers,

Wouldn't it be better to use a distro that isn't crappy and unsupported?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=158502\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Yes of course!! You're absolutely right.

But...
the skeye pad isn't that popular (e.g. compared to the simpad) and no one joined the project at linuxtogo, so this port is still in a very early state.
I look forward to the day i get 2.6 kernel running, build some patches and integrate all that stuff into a real distribution, like angstrom.

Any progress on this port? [div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

It's me again.

For those who were interested in the past and had a recent look at this topic:
Further progress has been made!
PCMCIA/CF slot and framebuffer support is working now.
Now you may use fb console output and start Xserver as well as using CF-cards or network-adapters (with serial console of course).
New test-kernel and initrd (familiar 0.8.4) can be found [a href=\"http://scholbert.homelinux.org/files/skeye-kernel-ramdisk.zip]here[/url].

Due to limited space on the initrd no further graphic funtionality at the moment, i'm sorry.
I guess i have to think about my rootfs file concept   .

In the meantime i also started working on 2.6 kernel support for this device.
Black screen, no output ...
But i just started   !!!

I think i will stop skeye pad related postings here, because lack of interest.
You may also look at my news page from time to time.

Thanks a lot, to those who came along!

General Discussion / New "ultimate" Devices By I-mate

Hi there,

Quote
Honestly though, I think this "Hey! A new Z replacement is being released,  but it runs Windows Mobile" is well beyond a joke now. Has nobody in any of these PDA companies ever seen pdaXii13 running on a c3x00? For a fraction of the price of continually licensing Win Mobile they could port pdaXrom/pdaXii13 or OZ, clean up any rough edges and then they're selling a genuinely useful computer instead of a computing joke.

Am I mad or is there some kind of corporate Linux PDA conspiracy going on here?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=154953\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

i absolutely agree with danboid.
i know that you guys did many more posts i will ever be able to write.
i know that i am not some kind of linux guru, but i know i like opensource in any way!!!!

All the work the gadget lovers did allover the world to make a wince device run linux is really fantastic and quite an engineering masterpiece!
See all the projects, XDA, handhelds ...
But it's always because the hardware and software is closed source!!

So why always spent so much energy into reverse engineering.
It's really annoying!

It seems like a kind of battle between the good and the bad.
The ones who build very nice and very impresive devices but put any kind of windows software on it and keep it all closed.
The others who are open minded, enthusiastic and like to share their knowledge with others but always have to crack the hardware.

As long as the most interesting pieces of hardware will run wince we will spent our lifetime on reverse engineering to make it ready for linux.

Wouldn't it be better to spent this time in writing usable and amazing applications??
Wouldn't it be better to spent this time in building open hardware??

How about the state of the PocketPenguin?

I think at least the most manufacturers won't build open platforms!
But perhaps some will in the future, the openmoko project could be trend setting.

For now I will try to the get the most out of my zaurus because it is a nearly open platform (i know there are still a lot of unknown things about it) !
Linux rocks!

Best regards,

scholbert

C1000/3x00 Hardware / Pictures Of Sl-c3100 Guts?

Hi Capn

Quote
Thanks! Those pages look great. You say there would be room for a USB dongle? Any hope for Wi-Fi? Ripping out the USB and replacing the USB port looks fairly easy, but it seems you need more than a dongle for Wi-Fi...
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=154041\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Not to be misunderstood, the USB connector of the stick was ripped off, not the small mini USB placed on the C3100 mainboard.

Placing a Wi-Fi stick wouldn't be that easy, it depends on the size of the module of course. In any case Bluetooth modules are smaller!
Use a USB WLAN stick, and USB interface is sufficient   .
Albertr managed to do so in a C1000, as you can see at his webpage.
But the C1000 devices have more space inside the case because of the missing harddisk.

Another aspect of placing additional hardware inside the case is power consumption and RF requirements.

Anyway you have to find a place inside, where RF broadcast can leave the case easily. Have a look around there are many postings about that in this forum   .
