A good way to clean things up would be; pay in advance, letting the seller/shipper hold physical shipment until payment funds have cleared (and the same for trades).

Been away for a while, has anyone found an 802.11g CF card that works (don't everyone reply at once ;-)   ).

Am tempted to try a Samsung SWL-2610C CF card, but don't know the chipset, attempting to find out.

Even more so, the " Tempest " element of radiating RF signals eminating from a classified area.  Haven't checked a Z, however, imagine they put out a healthy signal.

As Zenyatta stated, were I responsible for Security (and I have been)  it would be verboten (banned).

5x00 General discussions / Pqi Memory
« on: December 27, 2005, 08:51:31 pm »
Anyone using PQI flash memory, if so ? CF or SD (or both), and what MB capacity ?

Am seeing PQI selling at attractive prices, the question is: is it compatible with the SL-5x00 and does it work (no one likes the RMA hassle sending it back) ?

TIA Lou

Software / 3.1.3 Flash Problem
« on: December 21, 2005, 06:21:33 pm »
Thank you Si!    No, I used a Simple Media 128CF media card that came with my second SL-5500, my other flash was with a PNY 128CF.

I (just now) opened a new PNY 128CF card and copied ospack to it, and it flashed the Z straight out of the chute.  Yeeha!

What threw me, was on the first attempt, both lights stayed on for about 10 minutes till I finally said Hell with it and hit reset.  After that the lights would go out as previous described (as soon as I released the " C & D " keys.

Thanks again mate, my head got totally bent out of shape during the exercise, not condusive to logical thought.

Cheers,  Joyeux Noel,   Lou

Are you using the same CF card

Software / 3.1.3 Flash Problem
« on: December 20, 2005, 11:22:44 pm »
More than six unsuccessful attempts flashing to 3.1.3 (from 2.12) using a CF card with Ospack (in root directory) inserted in the SL-5500.

When I hit the hard reset both lights come on, but when I release the " C & D " keys the lights immediately go out, and I have to wait about eight minutes for the 5500 to self heal and the charge light to come on, then reset and return to 2.12 configuration.

Used this same procedure last week on my other 5500 flashing it from 2.38 to 3.1.3 and it flashed on the first go.

Can't figure out what I'm doing wrong, or what I may be overlooking.

Any words of wisdom would be appreciated.

Howdy Alll,

I'm looking for a CE-BC21 charger, does anyone have one they would like to sell?

Perhaps one that is gathering dust and/or sitting in a corner (or on the shelf like my SL-5500 did for  three years).

Let me know price, mode, if shipping is separate or included, and transaction medium (Pay pal, check, Au or Ag).

Shipping destination is the Hill Country in the Republic of Texas.

Contact me at --->  scs@worldlinkisp.com

Thanks, Lou

5x00 General discussions / Gkrellm
« on: December 05, 2005, 11:24:26 am »
Anyone know of an port of gkrellm in .ipk format for the SL-5x00 ?

Searched and searched, and found < gkrellm_1.2.10-1_arm.ipk >  mentioned by PDAxROM (oesf.org/forum), however, their web page doesn't have in either their D/L or Feeds section.

gkrellm is a usefull app, especially for slow dial-up connections, undersubscribed in bandwidth and over subscribed in customers (and utilizing Burst Bandwidth).   Displays data flow (or lack thereof) in realtime, along with other system data.

Lou

<<edit update >> found an old gkrellm_2.2.1_armv5tel.ipk, tried editing the suffix removing <v5tel> making it  arm.ipk and spoof the Z, but install apps couldn't see it.  Darn.

Software / Opera
« on: December 03, 2005, 09:01:47 pm »
Have it unzipped on a CF card.

Two questions:

1.  Do I do the CF card Ospack upload with W98SE Qtopia, or with Linux. or just stick the CF in the Zaurus and hit reset and let it eat?

2.  Do I need to use the 5500v31u.zip and/or 5500v31c.zip upgrade s/w, or is it contained in Ospack ?

The Windoze upgrade instruction mentions installing PC upgrade s/w after flashing and before subsequent docking of the Zaurus to the PC.

Instruction also mentions selecting the second and third buttons, that are not on my Qtopia desktop, I can wing this, but curious.

Sorry for all the questions, want to be sure before proceeding.  I've killed a couple mobo's in the past flashing back and forth (for performance).

Had a battery incident late last night that nearly resulted in breaking the Z, working on a fix and warning for  the forum (oversize $14 battery that didn't want to come out).

If you want to install the 3.13 rom, put it in the root directory of a FAT formatted CF card.
(Unzip it first, so you have a file named Ospack)
Follow flashing instructions.

For the opera.ipk file, just copy that file to the root directory of a FAT formatted CF or SD card.
Put the card in your zaurus.
Click on the Add/Remove Software icon, and select Install Packages.
It will install itself.

If you want to install the 3.13 rom, put it in the root directory of a FAT formatted CF card.
(Unzip it first, so you have a file named Ospack)
Follow flashing instructions.

Thanks Doug,

Currently stymied with WinZip (98SE), WinZip, says the file is too big to unzip.  Must be something I didn't read, or forgot.

Not sure, think the problem may be the .ipk suffix, I've unzipped and untarred some pretty big files.

I D/L .ipk files to a (98SE) directory (c:\z), then copy them (msdos) to my g: drive SD card (in a Card Reader/Writer).

For the .zip files I use c:\zz to (hopefully) unzip, then later clean up.

Do you recall how you unzipped yours?

Lou

Just a note...
If you change the rom, do a backup first in case you want to change back to your original rom, because the backups are incompatable between those roms.

Software / Opera's Screwing Up My Modem
« on: December 03, 2005, 12:22:01 am »

Never heard of Zepo, offline browsing seems only useful to view stored htm/html data.

Your crashes could be the result of a bad installation or incompatibilties with your O/S (am fielding a question on compatibility).

Would you kindly tell me where (URL) you obtained Opera 7.3, I spent hours today searching, only to run into blind alleys.  <<< yreka - found it - tnx doug >>>

Am suffering Opera 5.0 and need the advanced features that hopefully are in the later  Opera versions (6.x and 7.x).

If I find anything constructive on Zepo I'll share it.

<update> Zepo is basically a lean and mean newsreader, allowing you to D/L news, then later read the data without being connected.  Also, support is rather thin and hasn't  been upgraded in a while.  Don't think you want this unless you're really into news.  HTH

Haven't seen Opera 6.x or 7.x, but my Linux and Windoze versions allow you to work offline by selecting this in the " File " section.

I'm even considering Zepo as an alternative but don't know if it's worth it. Installing new software is very hard for me as I'm disabled.

Documentation online says it's just an offline browser.   What does that mean?  If I can't use it to replace Opera for going online, I don't want it.  Is Zepo any better than Opera 5.0?   (I really like the bookmark folders in 7.30.)

My Z is my only web access. I am finding that the upgrade of Opera 7.30 is nifty compared to my old 5.0 but it is causing nothing but problems for me.

I hate the idea of going back to Opera 5.0 because there are so many nifty features in 7.30, but it screws up my modem settings even when I just use Opera offline.

For example, when it crashes online, I find myself unable to disconnect from the web without rebooting!  My screen just freezes up forever if I tap "Disconnect'  on the modem popup menu.

Is there any way to disable forever Opera's access to my modem and modem settings?    I am running Opera 7.30 on an embedix machine (zaurus sl5500 Rom 2.38).

Any assistance with this would be appreciated!

I want to upgrade from Opera 5.0 to hopefully v 7.x, however my old SL-5500 is still original (2.12 ROM / 2.4.6 Kernel).

Questions:

1. What newer Opera versions (6.x - 7.x) will be compatible with the 2.12 ROM & 2.4.6 Kernel ?

2. Will I need to upgrade to a newer 2.x or 3.x ROM ?

3. Would the 2.37 ROM be a better choice (believe I have it on the Sharp v 1.2b upgrade CD) ?

I'd rather not have to flash the ROM based on the problems I've seen posted here, however, if I have to flash I prefer to stay with a Sharp ROM.

Also, where in the world (URL) can I locate Opera 6.x and/or 7.x to download ?   I spent hours today scanning the posts and searching URL's only to run into blind alleys and bad addresses.
