Hi, can someone please recommend a FREE program to convert..... At the moment I really can't afford to purchase the genuine version.

Tommo, I've just been loading DVDs into my AV 500 as usual without problems.  I use DVD Decrypter to make a file of the movie and then  PocketDivXEncoder_0.3.60 to encode for my Archos. This is an excellent program; I find that even if I increase the video and audio quality to 199 and 9 the files don’t take up that much space. I also find that audio level + 25 and brightness level + 12 work well on my two AV 500s. Click on Advanced Options in PocketDivXEncoder and you can choose settings for your device (Archos AV500).

I chose to "Upgrade to Lathe" and pay for this, but it was a mistake. I find PocketDivXEncoder does the job perfectly and is less of a problem than Lathe which seems to be the same program in a different skin.

Once I have made these -Archos.wmv files I copy them to my 'feature film' file on the Archos and a backup on an external 2.5 drive and then delete the whole process from my desktop as it uses a lot of space.

This way I have a copy of the films ready to load from my external drive as wanted, and keep the films on the Archos down to 4 or 5 at a time.

I have found it possible to defrag the AV500’s and while I see that it isn’t recommended, I haven’t had a problem yet.

Hi, can someone please recommend a FREE program to convert downloaded files to play in my AV560. When I use WMP 10 it says that the files are synced to the device, but when I try to play back, it comes up saying unable to play. I have downloaded one free program as a trial, but get a watermark across the screen on playback. At the moment I really can't afford to purchase the genuine version.

Hi, I need to purchase an in-car power lead/charger for my AV560. On the Archos page they only seem to do one for the AV 700. would it be ok to use this one?

I too am on my third av 560, since last Christmas but here in the UK I just take it back to Currys and they exchange it with no problem. I experience the 2 colour split screen usually after recording from TV, but works ok after turning the unit off, and then on again. I have only rung the Archos helpline once, never again! I spoke to some French guy who was worse than useless. I must say though that when it is working, the Archos is very good, I am a truck driver, and use mine most days. Nothing better when waiting to unload than watching a movie or some TV, and getting paid for it!

4 weeks ago I bought an Archos AV500. So far I am content with the equipment. But sometimes the equipment shows some little strangely errors. Where I don’t know, is this a bug? One reads the strangest phenomena, in the most diverse forum.
As told, the Arcos is now 4 weeks old. And some days ago following happened. After relighting the display shows one half in normal colours, and the other half shows wrong colours. After that, I tested the equipment extensively. But nothing else mattered.

Is it a software bug? Or is it defect?

I therefore would like to ask you for your opinion about the Archos AV 500 (or
similarly Archos devices.) Do they run error free with you? Please write down your impressions in this threat.

Archos forum / A Few Problems

Well I have 100gb Archos AV500.  I really like it but there are a few questions I have about it.

The first problem is about downloading from a digital camera.  I have two cameras.  A casio ex-z50 and a Casio s500.  They have almost identicle features except that the s500 is smaller and newer.  I can download pics from my z50 but not my s500.  Both are on mass storage so I can not see why one works but not the other.  Its a problem for me because I usually carry the s500.

The next problem is with music.  I want to delete a few artists but can not figure out how to from the device.  I can delete individual songs from playlists but not from the main music archive.  I could do it from the computer but it would take longer to find the files since you can not browse by author when using the computer with the av500. 

Finally, who has the expierence with the triple battery pack.  Does it actually give about 15 hours with video?  About how much bigger is the triple battery than the standard one?

So if anyone knows an answer to my problems please help.

Just got my new AV 500 (100 GB) and I am very distressed! The video and pictures play through perfectly on my TV but on the LCD screen on the unit the colors are all screwy and oversaturated  not life like at all!!! nothing I can do with the video settings seems to make a difference.  I havn't tried Customer service as yet . Has anyone encountered this.  the latest firmware already came with the unit

If you first click on the videocorder icon on startup,it will then say detecting video,it will then say no input signal. press any of the buttons on the bottom right of the unit and select contextual settings. I have set mine to the following, with no trouble. Source:Auto. Format: Auto. Resolution:VGA. Bitrate: 2500kb/s. Sampling: 48khz. Brightness: 37. Contrast: 25. Saturation: 25. Hue: 0. I think you have have your saturation or hue setting too high. If you have already adjusted these settings, I apologise for getting your hopes up!

  I am now on my third Archos in 4 months. I was very impressed at first with what seems to be a high quality item. My first one gave up the ghost after 4 months and the second one about 2 weeks later! The first one wouldnt charge or power up through the mains adapter, and the second one the same. I assure you that I am not doing anything that  I shouldn't. Luckily I have exchanged them with no trouble, but what happens after 12 months when the guarantee is up, and something else goes wrong? Throw it away? Maybe these Archos gadgets aren't all they are cracked up to be.

 Just an update on my last entry. I went into Currys today and they couldn't have been more helpful, they didn't have an AV 560 in store, but the guy rang round and found one in another local shop. I went over there and got an exchange with no trouble at all.
I would like to state that I have no connection at all with Currys, except as a customer. I now have the uphill task of filling up my new AV560!
Don't forget "BACK IT UP".

  I have big problems. My AV 560 has no battery life left, and it will not charge, or power up through the docking pod, it comes to life for only a few seconds and then shuts down. My major concern is all my content, that I have spent a long time building up, as there is no way to retrieve as far as I know.
This post is really to advise anyone to back up all their content in case of any trouble later.
I have been in touch,here in the UK with Currys, and they have told me that it is a non repairable item, and that I can exchange it in-store. I will be trying this option later today, so will let the forum know how I get on. Not much help to people outside the UK though, sorry.

I have now recorded loads of tv, dvd's, music etc. and I am very pleased with the performance of my AV560 so far. My son has the AV700, and I think my picture quality is superior. My question is this, how is it that I can only edit certain video files? on some video, I get the SET MARK HERE icon, on the action buttons on the right hand side of the unit, but on others there is no option.

How does one control the recording volumne when recording a TV program to the Archos
How do you delete a video recordingthat is recorded onto the Archos?

Hi, hope you can help me once again, as I do appreciate your replies. I have Imtoo dvd ripper installed on my PC. I have successfully ripped a film [not a copy] but I am having trouble syncing it to my Archos, when I do cd's through wmp I just select the sync. button and it goes into Archos ok. Pleasae once again keep it simple for this old guy.

You'll need to convert them to playable format before transfering to Archos. Use WMP to convert them to MP3s first.

Thanks for the answer i have changed the usb to hard drive but when  i drag music over from cd it comes up as a shortcut. how do i get music onto the archos using the hard drive?
