Archos forum / Question About File Size
« on: January 05, 2006, 09:42:27 pm »
Takeapic - Thanks alot for the info good help, Ill be ordering my 500 for my B-day in a few days.

I feel that the 100 gig would be too much. Im figureing that Ill probly be sick of the first movies I put on befor it gets even close to full so theyll be deleted then new onces added in that cycle.

The 100 gig weighs more, not to mention that its 200 bucks more. I decided I would rather save so Ill be able to get the newer model when they come out. Makes more sense.

Im ordering from buyeretail.com for just $419, I cant wait.

tat2sailor- Thanks for the reply but I dont think you get what im looking for

Archos says they base there claim of 130hr of video on there 30GB on 500 kbits/s MPEG-4 audio/video encoding & 1h30/movie (for near-DVD quality encoding at 1500 kbits/s or more recommended)

Are you saying the average dvd movie is encoded at 2500kb/s? If so that would me I would fit no where near 130hr of dvd video on it.

All Im trying to figure out is about how may dvd movies I could fit onto a 30BG to see if I think its enough for me so I dont have to push my budget to get the 100GB

You have an av500 what are you stats? How much vids pics songs have you fit onto yours and at what quality and how much space did it all take up?

Ok sorry about that, It seems I had worded my question wrong. I did not mean the dvd files that make up the move them selfs. I meant the movie as a whole, like when you hook up the av500 to a dvd player and copy the movie. If I transfered that to the computer it would be the movie file that I could compress to take up less space. I just wana know how much space that could really save in comparison to if i left it as just a direct copy.

Im looking into buying an av500 and I havnt decided if I should get a 30 or 100GB. The 100 is really pushing my budget but I plan on doing alot of copying dvds to it directly and have heard that this takes up alot of space. I could compress then on the computer then transfer back, but what a pain. And if there copy protected I wont even have that option.

So my question is, What would be the file size of an uncompressed dvd compared to one I compress?

Thanks in advance, -RTManach
