I'll do a full translation when I'm not as busy, but essentially behind the thick layers of formality they said that everything is currently in stock and they have set it aside for you (well, for me, I'll have to tell them that you're picking up instead of me so give me your full name) at the Tokyo store. So, yeah.

General Discussion / A Tricky Dilemma
« on: February 07, 2006, 02:03:07 pm »
I've used an older model C1 (the C1VR/BP) before. Currently I own a Vaio TR series laptop alongside my Z.

The keyboard on these units are definitely very usable - full-size keys and fairly decent key response. Definitely a plus.

The screen - my unit had a 1024x480 screen, which didn't work so well with some applications that expect everybody to have at least 800x600 by now (stuff poking through the bottom of the screen and whatnot). The model you're looking at probably has a 1280x600 screen at least though so that probably doesn't matter. (My TR has a 1280x768 screen, which works well with every application I throw at it).

The CPU - the Crusoe certainly is painfully slow clock-for-clock slow compared to the Pentium 3, but it supports the full x86 instruction set and is still faster than a 400mhz ARM CPU. You'll definitely be able to do a lot more with it, especially video playback and whatnot.

Being able to run desktop operating systems and applications without any recompiling or repackaging is a definite plus.

Do the VIVO features of the C1MHP require a special dongle? And if it does, is that included? I never did get to use the TV or VGA out on my C1 because of the availability of such parts here in Canada. Then again, you're in teh nihon so it should be easy enough to source.

Actually, here's what I'd do. I'd buy the C1 and try it out for a while to see if I like it. Then if it really turns out to be a disaster you can sell it on eBay. Since the C1 series laptops are so rare in North America, they fetch a pretty penny there - my 600mhz Crusoe / 128MB / 10GB sold overnight at my Buy It Now $599 price when I listed it not too long ago.

They can probably tell that a foreigner wrote it as opposed to a native Japanese person, but meh, what the hell.
Well, considering that you specifically stated in the mail that you were a foreigner... ()

- ashikase
- a foreigner

Hey, I figured it would have been pretty obvious from the somewhat messy grammar anyway.

It has lot of ???? maybe i dont have the codec! That character set do you use?

Generally when you post this sort of stuff on forums, the forum software automatically converts it to the web server's native encoding (most likely Unicode). The de-facto standard for Japanese communications on the internet is ISO2022JP, however.

Either way, I give up. I'll send the stupid e-mail for you.   You still have to tell me which battery you wanted, though.

Here, paste this into an e-mail. They can probably tell that a foreigner wrote it as opposed to a native Japanese person, but meh, what the hell.

edit: Actually, which battery DID you want to buy? I assumed you wanted one of the stock replacement high capacity batteries, but if you wanted one of the other ones then you should paste the correct model code in the brackets in place of EA-BL11.

Cxx0 General discussions / Sd/cf + Jap. Dictionary Questions For C860
« on: January 26, 2006, 03:20:56 am »
Regarding dictionaries:

I've yet to receive my Z (it's been purchased, but a friend of mine just happened to know somebody who was coming to Toronto in the near future, so I managed to arrange for her to bring it over), but currently on my PC I use the fifth edition of Kenkyusha's 新和英大辞典, also known as Green Goddess, and I think it fits your description quite well. It's filled with details and examples, and is much more comprehensive than Kodansha's Furigana dictionary. It's only a J/E dictionary though - I currently don't have a good E/J at my disposal, either.

Once I receive my Z (in around a week) I'll be able to tell you how well it works on it. The data files do take up around 100MB so you'd definitely need to have a decently sized flash card to store all the dictionaries you need.

I bought my c860 about a year ago in Japan but haven't gotten much use out of it. The main reason is I've been unable to find Japanese/English and English/Japanese dictionaries that suit my needs.

I want a dictionary that gives example sentences such as Kodansha's furigana dictionary.

1) Does anyone know a dictionary such as that which I can find or buy to run on a Zaurus? (That will require it to be in epwing format won't it?, I don't know too much about how to do this).

My other question is re. cf/sd cards for storage and internet access. I'm thinking that I'd like to get an SD card for internet use and a CF/microdrive for storage (using the cards in this way seems to be cheaper than the other way around?)

2) Can someone explain how wifi works? I've never used wireless internet access before, where will my Zaurus work?

3) Can anyone recommend good sd/cf cards for me? Are there any compatability issues with the Zaurus or will any card work? I'm thinking of buying a large card (I hear CF cards come in 4/6/8 gig sizes).

4) Does anyone have some Japan-specific shopping advice? I live in Kyoto and was thinking of buying through http://www.kakaku.com/ (Japanese web site) which I've used in the past and seems very cheap for Japan.

Thanks for any advice.
