OpenZaurus/Opie/Qtopia / Trouble Upgrading Libs In Opie
« on: February 12, 2006, 04:20:01 pm »
I've got an SL-5500 using Opie 1.2.1 on OZ 3.5.3 and I can't install any ipk's because I have to update these files:

libqpe1 (>=1.2.1)
libopiecore2-1 (>=1.2.1)
libopieui2-1 (>=1.2.1)
libc6 (>=2.3.5+cvs20050627)

After many tries, I've FINALLY got libc6 to install.  Now, I can install more ipk's.  However, when trying to upgrade libqpe1 from 1.2.0-r2 to 1.2.1-r0, it fails every time telling me that it's already current, but obviously it's not.  I'm using the Package Manager program to install the ipk's because it has a nice gui.  If anyone thinks it'll make a difference using the cli, tell me how and I'll give it a shot.  Thanks.

General Discussion / Oz 3.5.3 Gpe, Out Of Space On /
« on: January 30, 2006, 08:32:47 pm »
Is there another way to get my /media/ram directory to show back up under 3.5.4RC?  I looked in the /etc/ipkg.conf file and all checked the same as 3.5.3, so is there any other reason it wouldn't mount?

I'd rather just stay under 3.4.5RC and work through the issues as opposed to going back.

I've been able to install many ipk's under my SD card w/o a hitch in order to get some new apps working, but I'm getting hung up on installing libc6.  It gives me a very long error stating something like this:

Configuring libc6
Could not open //usr/lib/ipkg/info/libc6.list for writing: No space left on device
pkg_write_filelist pkg=libc6 returned 28
Linking packages installed in:  sd
Error linking '/media/card/packages/opt/QtPalmtop/etc/colors/Dark.scheme' to '/opt/QtPalmtop/etc/colors/Dark.scheme'
etc...

Is this primarily because of lack of internal flash space?

And if I have to remove some of the apps preinstalled from Opie and move them to my SD card, how do I know which ones I can move?  And how do I avoid massive dep problems?

I know I've got a lot of questions, so answer what you can.  Any info is help well appreciated.

The third method was to use ipkg through the command line and tell it to install the packages to a certain destination directory, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to do that. Most of what I've read is utilizing the ipkg function either through a sync or wifi to download and install the packages over the net (kinda like synaptic does).

ipkg install -d <mount point> <package name>

E.g.: ipkg install -d ram foo.ipk

Then run: ipkg-link mount /media/ram

Which will produce symlinks from the files you installed so that they appear to be on the root partition.[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=112294\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Ok.  This worked for me until I hit another bump.  I had a power issue that was resolved by upgrading my kernel from 3.5.3 to 3.5.4RC and nudging Opie from 1.2.0 to 1.2.1.  Now, when I go into either system info or pkg manager, I don't have my /media/ram listed.  Do I have to manually mount it?  I installed the 48 x 16 kernel, so I know that I should have something...right?  Or am I being a dunce and forgetting that the 14 MB Opie file gets installed there?

General Discussion / Can't Turn On Zaurus After Manual Power Down!
« on: January 26, 2006, 10:39:02 pm »
I don't know what's going on!?!  I installed Opie 1.2.0 on my SL-5500 after using GPE for a couple of weeks, an I found a major problem!  When I shut off my Z using the On/Off button on battery power(fully charged or otherwise) I can't turn it back on!  Battery status prior was fine.  Not running any apps at the time either.  Also, while on AC power, it's fine.

  I can shut down and power right back up without a prob.  While on battery power, if it auto shuts off from the sleep mode timer, I can start it back up as well.  After reboot, it's fine, until I plug in external power...then the problem stats again, but in reverse.  Once off an AC power, I can't turn it back on until I reboot.  Is there a know app or other such issue that would cause this?

I've got the same setup.  I started off with the 64 x 0 setup and then continued to back off until I was back to the 32 x 32.  I've been looking everywhere on the net trying to figure this stuff out and I might have found a couple of useful sites, but I just don't understand this stuff enough to decypher the coding they use.  I really like linux and I want to understand it, but I'm kinda limited on free time.

Most of the info I've found gives 3 options:
-->First, you could go through and delete any unused files and programs (like bluetooth and such) if you aren't going to use them.  A couple of the users got their Internal Flash (mounted @ /) up to 10+ MB free space.
-->Second, you could somehow copy the entire /usr directory to an sd or cf card and use it as your root directory, or something like that, but it seemed like they were saying that it can cause things to run a bit slower, and once moved, you still can't delete everything or GPE will lose its link to the sd card....not quite sure though.
-->The third method was to use ipkg through the command line and tell it to install the packages to a certain destination directory, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to do that.  Most of what I've read is utilizing the ipkg function either through a sync or wifi to download and install the packages over the net (kinda like synaptic does).
It seems like there is so much information on the internet on so many different distros, that it getting difficult to narrow down what you are searching for.  I wish I could find a couple of rock solid sites, or even a local community to answer some of my questions.
Feel free to email me if you get a hold of any good info.

Linux Issues / New To Zaurus - Need To Sync
« on: January 21, 2006, 01:00:57 am »
Ok, so I went to the Zaurus user group site and they have a bunch of ROM's that can be downloaded...Cacko, Hybrid, X11...what are these exactly?  Is it like Gnome or KDE for Ubuntu?  If so, do these replace Qtopia?  And what's the difference between open source and closed source as far as usablility?  It seems as if there are some restrictions when using an open source version, but there are obviously going to be advantages.

Linux Issues / Need Input On Sl-5500
« on: January 19, 2006, 08:41:46 pm »
I'm determined to figure out how to use Linux better.  I've got Ubuntu at home, and just got this SL-5500.  I'm looking all over the net on how to get this thing working the way I would like it and am having  trouble trying to decipher some info.
--> First, I looks like there is an open source ROM as well as a closed source.  What are the major differences?
--> Second, how about the OS itself?  What am I "running"?  Is Qtopia the OS, or just my GUI?  I'm not really understanding it all, but I want to.  Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks in advance.

Linux Issues / New To Zaurus - Need To Sync

The zaurus has an installation program (add/remove software) so you don't *need* to install the sharp pc apps.  If you're going to sync using a flash card, you can also install packages from there too.  Add the ipkgs to the card and put the card in the zaurus.  When you startup the add/remove software, you will be able to choose the packages on the card to install.

Great.  This has been a lot of help.  So, are there any really good web sites to look for apps?  I'm going to google for some, but there's always going to be a few good ones that search engines won't find.

Linux Issues / New To Zaurus - Need To Sync

you will need to setup public and private keys for passwordless access to the desktop.  Go to the sync->configure and you will see the remote sync option and then it will give you the ssh section.  kde pimpi's documentation describes it best.

I believe it gets the .ics and and the vcf files, syncs with them locally and then sends them back to your desktop.

I generally don't sync, but replicate my stuff so I just have an scp pull to my desktop.  For security reasons I rather let the desktop have passwordless access to the Z, than have it the other way around.  If kopi/kapi had commandline sync, I would have synced my data instead.

I'm not sure if I really need to sync with my pc.  I'll probably get a multi-card reader and do the data xfer that way, but how do I install new programs to my Zaurus?  With my Axim, you had to run the installation program on your pc, then when you sync, it installs the program onto your pda.  Is the Zaurus the same way?  If not, is the OS the same, or similar enough, to my home version in a way where it read and execute the same files?  Or does it recognize only certain extensions?

Linux Issues / New To Zaurus - Need To Sync
« on: January 17, 2006, 10:56:41 pm »
Hey guys and gals.  I just recieved my new pda in the mail today.  I got a Zaurus SL-5500.  I also use Ubuntu on my home PC (as well as a very small partition for Win XP for those 1 or 2 things that I haven't figured out how to run in Linux   ).
I'm not quite sure how to best utilize my new pda.  I came from a Dell Axim X3 (don't worry, it was free) and a Palm m100 before that.  I know that the 5500 uses a Linux OS...but that's about it.  From reading up on some stuff on the net, it seems like there a bit of customization that can be done, same as my PC Linux OS.  Am I right in assuming that?
Also, I'm trying to figure out how to sync my pda to Ubuntu so that I can xfer info and backup my data.  Any help as far as programs, links to how-to's, or any other tips would be awesome.
My specs are:  2.6 MHz Pentium , 256 Mb RAM, cable modem, Ubuntu Linux Breezy Badger 5.10
