Sweet!  I remember when American toys used to be that dangerous...

Nothing says "kid friendly" like esophagus-sized sharp spears!

For Sale / Wanted / Sold - Ambicom Bluetooth Card Still Available

Just for clarification now: I've removed the BT card from the sale.  You can buy it separately in another auction, but it's not included with the Z anymore.

thanks for that, was planning to get to hong kong, but japan prob too pricey for this trip...
If you're planning to go to Hong Kong just for the Zaurus then forget it. I had been to all the usual computer malls in Hong Kong and the only thing I found was a model made for the the China market (can't remember the model #) and the shop (in Star City?, next to the pier in Tsim Sha Tsui) only had the single unit for sale and wasn't planning on stocking more. In the end I just bought through pricejapan. My guess is that even if you do find a shop that sells Zaurus outside of Japan the cost will be more than from pricejapan. Just ain't worth it

Yeah, I have to agree with that.  If you're going to Japan anyway, Akihabara is the best place to score a Z.  Not worth a special trip.  Softmap has a used PDA store which will get you the cheapest Z around, though deals are available on eBay as well (Disclosure: I am currently selling one on eBay, but I'm saying in general eBay is a good place to find deals and not hyping it up because I want you to buy mine  )

For Sale / Wanted / Sold - Ambicom Bluetooth Card Still Available

Hi all.  I've loved using my Z, but in the end, I really need a PDA that integrates well with my work, and I've tried everything, but I just can't get comforatble with it.  So, I need to sell it to get a simpler PDA.  I'm going to miss it, so please give her a good home

This Z is in great condition, no major scratches on her (just a little wear, but with the white case, it's impossible to see.  I swapped out the Hitachi microdrive for a 4GB 150x compact flash card, which gives better speed (menus are more "zippy", boots up a lot faster) and has given me improved battery life (anecdotal, I haven't done hard tests, but it lasts longer than it used to).  Also, it's had an Overlay Brilliant Screen Protector installed from Day One, and it still works fine.

I've got the 2.6 kernal on there, but still Sharp ROM.  One reason I have to let my Z go is I just didn't have the time to get into enough Linux to make the most of her.  She's basically "virgin" and ready to do whatever you need.

It also comes with an Ambicom BT-2000 CF bluetooth card.  I used it to connect to the internet through my v710 phone, and it works great.  I also have a split sync/charge cable (end splits into USB jack and power jack, so you can hook it up to your computer and charge it and sync it), a USB host cable (so you can attach external drives, etc), a case (pouch case holds the Z and BT card), and an external battery extender (for the PSP, but works great on the Z - it will charge it when the Z is off or extend life when on - very small and light).

Here's something you can try with the battery.  It works on my v710, and a lot of the OS is the same on the two.

After you plug it in, force the ring style to "Vibrate" or "Vibe and ring".  That should shut off the charger.

Normally, if you have your phone set to Vibrate and plug it in, the phone will automatically change it to "Loud" or some other non-vibe setting (since it doesn't want to vibrate the phone while it's connected to a cable).  For me, forcing it to "Vibe and Ring" after I plug it in cuts off the charge circuit until I unplug and replug in the phone.

Hope it works for you.

Can't help on the modem part, though

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Quick Questions Before I Buy...

First, Conics lists the 3200 as coming with the Sharp EA-75 worldwide power adaptor.  The page for that adaptor says that it is the one that comes in the box, and works without a shape adaptor in the USA.  I just wanted to make sure this is correct.

I can only speak to this first one.  The plug shape in the US and Japan is the same.  As long as the transformer can handle the conversion, you won't need anything to make it fit US plugs.  This transformer (I'm almost certain) handles 100-220V and 50-60Hz, so it will work out of the box.  As a reference, I got a 3000, and it only comes with the Japanese adapter: the plug is the same shape as the US, and will fit in a US wall socket, but the transformer only accepts 100V input, not 100-220V (US is 110).

Now, in my experience, the extra 10 volts has never been a problem.  However, luckily, the 3xxx/1000 series has the same voltage and plug size as the PSP (5V power, not sure the exact plug size).  I just picked up a $15 PSP charger at my local game store and it works great.  I also got a $7 USB connector/charger for the PSP at Best Buy - it is a USB Y-cable, with a charger and a mini-B, so I can connect it to my PC and charge it at the same time with just 1 USB port.  I also got a rechargable power extender brick.  There are also car chargers, etc.  Thanks to the PSP, you'll never have trouble finding power accessories for your 3200.

Ok, got it installed.  My boot went from 118 seconds to 82 seconds, a 36 second savings.

The dictionary now loads up pretty much instantly, but I didn't get as much of a boost to KO/PI.  It's faster, I guess (I didn't run a lot of benchmarks), but it isn't "instant".  I guess that has more to do with the processor than the access time.

Still, it moves a bit better, and I plan to enjoy better battery life, at any rate.

Anyone want to buy a slightly used 4 GB Hitachi?

Ok, looks like I got it figured out.  The following code made a perfect mirror onto a 4 GB Compact flash drive:

First, insert the 4 GB CF card you want to use as a new internal drive.
Then, unmount it:

Code: [Select]
umount /dev/hdc
Then, use the following command to copy the internal drive to your CF card:

Code: [Select]
dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/hdc
It took 2-3 hours, but it worked perfectly.  Make sure you have your Z plugged in to AC power and make sure to turn auto-suspend off in the system settings.  Having the screen saver turned on caused no problems.

Hi all.  I got that new CF card in, but as I said, I'm a total noob at linux

I'm trying to get the CF card partitioned so I can dd my microdrive to my CF before I do the surgery on my Z.  I don't have a desktop linux box to help with this.

I can get it partitioned, but the sizes are wrong.  I noticed that the Z's MD has 63 sectors per track, and my CF has 32 sectors/track.

Is there anyway to change this?  Does it matter?  Can I leave it at 32 and just set the partition to be approximately the same size?

Just got it today.  Seems to run Ok, but I don't have a USB 2.0 card reader to really try it out.  I'm going to try an install it tomorrow; I've got to read through all the instructions on how to copy the partitions.  I'm fine with hardware; I have no qualms about cracking my Z to throw it in. But I'm a linux newbie, so I want to make sure I don't have to crack it open too many times

Found this today when I was searching for some other stuff on Newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16820218080

At just over $100, I had to try it.  I've got a 3000, and the lag on my appointment book and contacts is really annoying.  Gonna swap it out and report back.

The specs say it's about twice as fast as the Sandisk Ultra II card, but we'll see about that...

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Deciding Between 860 C1000 And C3000

Just a quick update, I went with the 3000.  The more I learned about it, the more impressed I became.  I got it at Softmap 5 for $385 (the $350 one had some scratches on it).  I was sold by the much nicer dictionary, the translation software, USB host capability, and in the end, the 4 GB microdrive (I know I'm going to load this thing up with junk now).  I don't really need the database software or the train schedules (since I'm heading back to NC in a week).

Thanks to everyone for your advice.  Now I know I'll be hear asking a million questions in the future.

Ok, I've done some searching, and I've found all kinds of info on dictionaries (like Zten).  I think if I add some extra words to the C1000's dictionary or use something like Zten, I don't really need the fancy dictionary from the C3000.  (And I think I am going to pass on the 860 for now).

One more quick question.  There is a database program included with these, but am I right in noticing that the C1000 and C3100 both come with a full version while the C3000 has a stripped-down version?  I may actually use the database feature, so can anyone explain the differences?  Thanks.

Thanks for the replies so far.  I appreciate the advice.

I was able to head down to a Yamada denki last night and try out the 1000 and 3000 a little more, mostly comparing the dictionaries.  I'm not 100% sure on the specs of each dictionary, but I noticed just messing around that the one on the 3000 was much nicer than the 1000.  At any rate, the 3000 had "electrophoresis" while the 1000 did not.  Kanji lookup seemed similar (like others, I'm considering this partly over a Wordtank, since I don't need that much Kanji power).

Rokugo, you mentioned I could outfit the 860 with a better dictionary (available separately for purchase, I guess)?  Where is this dictionary available from?  Is there a page I can check the specifics and some screen shots?

Otherwise, it looks like I may need to get a 3000.  I don't mind the price too much, and I'd rather not get a model that has already been phased out (plus I like the idea of USB host for transfering camera pictures).

Unfortunately, Monday is the only day I'll really have to get to Akihabara again before I go.  That means I'll probably be the last sucker to buy it at high price (though prices have been falling considerably already).
