Accessories / Usb Stowaway Keyboard Keymapping Script
« on: June 13, 2006, 10:01:39 pm »

Hey, I'm running Cacko 1.23 with a C1000 and just bought a Fellowes Stowaway USB Keyboard.  I read in Meanie's book that one could write a script to automatically map the keys correctly when the USB keyboard is plugged in and then switch it back to the default when it isn't.

I'm pretty new to the Zaurus, can anyone just copy me their script and tell me where I need to key it in?

It would be much appreciated!

Hmm, let me put my question another way...

I get that Keyhelper is supposed to allow me to get the USB keyboard's keys mapped correctly.  But, for example, it won't let me key in "?" either on the Zaurus's built-in keyboard or the usb keyboard.  In fact, when I type the ? key on the USB keyboard, nothing happens.  So, how do I get this keyboard working correctly?

C1000/3x00 Hardware / C1000 W/4gb Sd Or A C3x00 Model

If it helps you decide, as far as I know, C1000 will not work with SD cards greater than 1GB.

Quote
I'm considering an upgrade to one of the SL-Cxxx units from my SL-5500.  I've been using a 256MB SD card as my "Hard Drive," and I could happily continue a similar tradition.

So, what I'm trying to decide between is this:

An SL-C1000 with a 4GB high-speed SD card almost always installed as the "Hard Drive."  (here's such a card: http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetai...tCode=82502-19)

--or--

An SL-C3x00

What I've ID'ed as pro's and cons already are:
-SL-C1000 + 4GB card is still about $100 US lower than a SL-C3200
-SL-C3200 has 2 more GB
-I lose/use my SL-C1000 SD port, and use the power supplied to it full time

What I have little clue about though, is the following:
Does the SL-C1000 + SD card route end up with lower energy consumption?
Does the SL-C1000 + SD card route end up with higher speed?

If yes to both, I really think I'd prefer that path, despite it not being "the best" I can get right now.  Does anyone have other factors they can think of that I should include in my evaluation?

And here's a crazy idea, that seems a bit more readily useable than the current efforts to solder in USB accessories:
Is it possible to treat a SL-C3200 like a SL-C1000 by removing the microdrive, and if so, could I then use the other slot for misc peripherals like a Bluetooth card?  I could possibly splurge for something like that.

Deals and Great Z Buys / Question On Vendors
« on: May 04, 2006, 03:05:16 pm »
I just received my Akita from pricejapan two days ago.  I did a lot of pricing, looking around, checking e-bay and settled on pricejapan.  They have the lowest price for brand new product, and ship very, very fast.  I had my order in five days, two of which were saturday and sunday.

You get the unopened retail box, proof of purchase (for warranty purposes), the driver CD (for usb connection to windows XP computer), some peace of mind of knowing the product is covered against defects for the next year, even though you have to pay for all shipping costs to and from pricejapan (I believe they will serve as your agent in the warranty process dealing with Sharp Japan).  You also get a USB (not host) cable and EA-72 adapter that is very slick and compact and works fine in the U.S.  The manuals are useless unless you know Japanese.  I like the idea of being able to have and keep EVERYTHING that came in the box, including the box, to preserve resale value.

E-bay is too shady unless you either know the seller from these forums or they are able to satisfactorily answer all of your questions.

That being said, if you don't want to pay shipping costs for possible warranty services, go with one of the other vendors that offer that support.  Some of the other vendors have staff tech people that can fix some problems for free without shipping it off to Japan.

For me, I try to take extremely good care of my electronics and have very rarely needed warranty support for something that I didn't screw up on my own.  I don't think Sharp Japan is going to be very willing to go the extra mile for foreigners.  In the end, you pays your money, you takes your chances.

Try Zeditor to edit .conf files.
You can find Zeditor at most of the feeds and ELSI (link at top of this page)
Click and hold the icon, then select Execute with root privilage
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=125674\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Ok.  Zeditor is totally easy to use.  Thanks!  I edited the file, taking out all other card entries except for the WCF12, but I still have the same problem.

When I plug in the card, the light blinks for a second or two and then goes blank.  The Z recognizes the card fine.

It can't be the card, because it was working in pdaXrom.

Any ideas?

Edit: Ok, I figured it out.  I unchecked auto-connect and it fixed the problem.  Thanks!

Ok, so here is my problem...

When I plug in the WCF12, I get a message "New Card: WCF12 Linksys blah blah"  The little Link light on the card blinks off and on for about two seconds, then goes completely blank.

I then open up NetFront and it asks me if I want to connect.  I say yes.  Then I get a Connection Setup Error, "Cannot find the device card for communication."

I tested in the card in pdaXrom and it worked just fine.

How do I get it working in Cacko?

Any help is much appreciated!

Ok.  I feel really bad asking this, but I've honestly tried doing searches of forums and google to figure this out on my own and come up with nothing.  I even followed the instructions on using vi in the How-to and it didn't work.  No one is answering in #cacko, so here goes...

I want to edit /etc/pcmcia/hostap_cs.conf.  So, I fired up QKonsole.  At the $ prompt I type:

Code: [Select]
$ su
# vi /etc/pcmcia/hostap_cs.conf

Then the file comes up.  From there, when I delete something and then press shift+ to save, nothing really happens.  I hit cancel.  Nothing really happens.  I close the window and open up QKonsole to see if the changes had any effect.  Nope.  Nothing changed.

What gives?

I also tried typing:

Code: [Select]
$ su

zaurus login: root
Login incorrect

Huh?

I also tried editing the file in Midnight Commander.  I find the file ok, but then I have no idea of how I'm supposed to actually edit the file from the program.

What am I doing wrong?  I'm sorry if this post irritates anyone.

Many thanks in advance!

General Discussion / Rom Choice Poll?
« on: May 01, 2006, 12:41:06 am »
I think it would be interesting and informative to see a poll of how many people use which of the different ROMS that are available.

It might help newbies like me decide on one!

Is this something I can set up?

Thanks!

C1000/3x00 Hardware / Basic Battery Charging Question
« on: April 27, 2006, 09:45:39 pm »
Ok, so I know in the olden days, you didn't want to charge batteries unless they were nearly depleted first.  But apparently li-on batteries work differently...   What is the best habit to get into with charging the Z to prolong battery life?

I anticipate using the Z for long stretches of time during the work day at my desk.  Is it ok to leave the Z plugged in to AC power for 9 or 10 hours at a time during the workday?

OR

Is it better to completely charge the Z, unplug from AC power, and let it run on the battery until it is almost depleted, then plug it in, rinse, repeat?

Thanks!

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Zaurus Or Libretto?
« on: April 25, 2006, 04:29:52 pm »
Yep, I was referring to the very old Librettos.  6 year old hardware is too prone to failure and the data it would have on it is too important.  I'm convinced that a C1000 is what I want.  I'm currently eyeing pricejapan...

Thanks to all who replied!

Right, but by the time you lug a usb keyboard around, you might as well have brought your laptop.  Right?
