But if it would be a straightforward task to perfectly bidirectionally sync devices, everybody would love to write sync programs.

Sharp ROMs / Address Book From Cacko On Sharp Rom

I originally used cacko, however I had to find an alternative because the Datebook in cacko is not the one that came with the 3200 stock ROM.  The one in cacko suffers from a bug that Sharp patched where some of your reoccurring appointments will not show up when synced from Outlook.  So I have gone to the stock NAND load and have applied Figlabs conversion overtop, which is by far the best solution to really use this thing as a PDA.  I am very happy with it.

Hi bit_bucket,

I thought Rob at Fig Labs had 'hacked' the Address Book in his conversion to allow for english alphabetical sorting.  If you're having problems, give Rob an email and he may be able to correct it.  He may be able to intergrate the recent Sharp patch if that is the issue

Additionally (and SEARCH THE FORUM FIRST - I do not vouch for my memory   ) I seem to remeber a problem in runing two forms of the address book.  Someone corect me if I'm wrong.

Thank you for the helpful information.

If it's ok with you, what was the card involved with the "stickyness"?

Hello Everyone,

Wish to by a mobile (Sharp of course   ) and a scanner (DocuPen) both use MiniSD cards for storage.  Wonder if the beasties would work in the sl-cxxxx Zaurii (with the appropriate adaptor of course).

Any known issues or caveates people can warn me about??!!

- Softwriting on VirtualPC - need to train this which is looks like it might have a chance
- DigitEyeOCR looks pretty beta but it also has a "learn" mode and runs on linux/mac
<Snip>
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Softwriting is interesting but you have to write in block not with connected writing, and I have spent an age relearning how to "write".

DigitEyeOCR is nice (and an 'uncommon' open source in the Mac world) but no handwriting recognition.  Still - I'll play with that first

Is there a size restraint in Xournal??  I have this 'Wild' idea of using a Docupen to scan papers at University and then move the images into the Xournal or an 'Image to PDF' programme and store them on the Zaurus (yes, you still have to scan the 'real McCoy' on occasions in this age of digital journals)

The Docupen uses a MicroSD card - any problems for a Zaurus to read these if embedded in a SD converter/housing?? ( [a href=\"http://www.planon.com/docupen_rc800_pro.php]http://www.planon.com/docupen_rc800_pro.php[/url] )

I agree with ZDevil - no keyboard not interested.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=158753\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I'm going to weigh into this debate with the old Newton axiom - "What about Handwriting Recognition?"

Yes - a keyboard is a must for "vast" data entry, but these UMPC thingies are supported by Mico$oft and do have very good HRW engines to boot.  They also have the size to actually write on them with comfort and accuracy.

As for text entry - then a paired Bluetooth keyboard should work very well.

I think this is an interesting idea,
also have a look at a similar product: http://www.acecad.com.tw/dma402.html

These would be quite useful for note taking and then converting, I would also like to use it as a tablet, but support for this is quite limited (no Mac drivers for instance)

There is a piece of software on the zaurus called xournal which does note taking and conversion to pdf... then all that is needed is a handwriting recognition software.
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Interesting product, but I think the digipad is a little better, if only that the software is included not on 30 day trial.

I too love all things Mac - I was 'Fantasizing' about using CodeWeavers CrossOver Mac ( [a href=\"http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxmac/]http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxmac/[/url] ) to possibly run Ritemail or Evernote.

Xournal sounds really promising, but I have not found anything on the net that looks remotely possible for handwriting recognition for the Z OR Linux for that matter.

Cheers,

AdamD

Does the handwriting recognition of this device actually work? The last time I looked at a device like this notes were saved as bitmap images and you had to be sure that the current page in the memory always matches the current paper page, i.e. you had to number the pages. Somebody supposed to use loose pages & a fast scanner instead.

As a tablet input device: Is it sensitive to pen pressure?

With respect to viewing html pages: I suppose the result will be one HTML/text file per page on paper. Why would you want a special software for this?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=158306\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

A good few points, let me see if I can answer with my limited knowledge.

As you point out, the device stores separate pages in memory - probably as a bitmap but I could not find that out from the site itself.  The idea is to then transfer across to Ritemail on you PC and that would do the handwriting translation to txt/html/yada, yada, yada.  Alternatively, you can apparently send handwritten notes via html over email (via PC link or more practically via the Pocket PC/ Palm versions of this software).  You do have to prompt it when you change pages to tell the device you're 'on the next page'.

From the promotional blurb, the pad can be used as a tablet for your PC and can be used to annotate PowerPoint presentation etcetera.

The positives of creating both a handwritten note on paper and a digital note on the Digipad is that your notes can be converted to text from the digital image and you can refer back to the 'scratchings' on paper to help with the translation.  I have a sneaking suspicion that trying to OCR a handwritten page on a scanner could be a real pain!!  Additionally, the ability to store ones notes in one place (i.e.digitally) is a real bonus for ease of review AND searching.

Finally, if you ever get to see my handwriting, you'll appreciate why I'd like a programme to clean it up!!

Cheers,

AdamD

Hello Everyone,

Been looking at the old Tablet PC for some time.  However the price has always made me giddy.

The other day a person that I support (I work with people with varying impairments) showed me the Digipad ( http://www.absecomm.com.au/catalog/product...?products_id=53 ).  It's the first solution I've seen that takes decent notes with a more reasonable price.

The problem (if you can call it that) is that the Digipad files the notes in Ritemail 2.5 - that can be converted to html, txt or a propriety setting.  ( http://www.evernote.com/en/products/ritemail/ )

What I can do is take the notes at days end, convert to txt or html and store it on the Z for later reference.  What I'd like to know is what Note programme in the Zaurus lexicon would be best for this (search function is the important point here as is a good hierarchical system).

P.S. Do any of the note programmes on the Zaurus store their inked notes in html??  Might save the conversion and just transfer from SD card in Digipad to the Z if this can be done??

Cheers,

AdamD

P.P.S.  Still have 3.5 year old on lap, so note programme with good drawing features would be of benefit.  But please no "Thomas the Tank Engine" templates - AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHGGRRRRRRRRR ( https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=23351 )

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Son On My Lap, C3200 And Choice Of Rom
« on: February 24, 2007, 04:27:10 am »
Hello Everyone,

Unable to withstand another moment of "Thomas and Friends" on the internet - (thought the Rev. Audrey wrote some interesting morality plays   ). I convinced my son to "Talk" to some people about "Commpootersss".

We (ok, me for my sanity) wanted to chat about ROM choices for mainly work choices.

Work for his father is short note taking,   searching of a company intranet (love hotspots)   database for the notes,   some EXCELLENT security (my job is related to supporting people with welfare issues so no peekies please (wifi OR physical)  ) and finally, some intergration with Lotus Notes (ver. 6.3).

Sharp ROM and Cacko are good but will age quickly now with the end of the line.  I've read the views on the forum about OZ, pdaXrom and OpenBSD and find them interesting but I've no experience with them.

Cheers in advance.

Sorry for all the smilies - I did say I had a three year old on my lap

My son sends the exclamation mark (but it was a tough choice between it and the HEART.

Mac Issues / A Question Z And Icalc/address Book Exports
« on: February 01, 2007, 09:58:46 pm »
Hello everyone,

I was wondering if the Z's standard PIM (or KOPI for that matter) export to/import from CSV (Comma Separated Variables).

If this is the same for a Mac (I DON'T have a new one - YET, but I can't imagine why not), could this be a 'simple' work around for Diary woes!??

Cheers,

Hi deadite66,

I had a lot of trouble emailing figlabs in the past at their site.  My solution was to PM rob_figlabs.  Rob does a lot of posting to the forum here and answered my questions very promptly. He may be able to assist.

Cheers,

P.S. Rob even survived my "niggling" about Australian Cricket Supremacy -
Australia 5 tests - England 'Zero, zip, nada' - God bless Steve Warne

Sorry emotional Aussie Cricket fan

General Discussion / Peoples Experience Taking Notes
« on: December 24, 2006, 04:42:02 am »
Thanks cvmiller,

I WANT MY NEWTON BACK!!!!!!!!!!!

That said, I'm NOT going to ruin my pathetically depleted bank balance on a Tablet PC.  The Zaurus sounds good, so I'll just have to learn to "handwrite" or find some type of conversion app or cut and paste app for the DrawPad so I can put my casenotes into a digital or paper file.

Any Ideas on the later ideas (cut and paste to a .doc or convert handwritting to text)

Cheers,
AdamD
