C1000/3x00 Hardware / Fighting The Usb Mini-a Shortage...
« on: March 17, 2007, 07:32:10 pm »
Newer TI calculators come with mini-a to mini-b cables, as they use USB OTG for calc-to-calc connections. Accordingly, they're far from mythical-- in fact I'd say they're the easiest OTG cables to get, if you know what you're looking for.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Is The 3.5.4.1 Oz Libpcap Broken?
« on: August 29, 2006, 09:56:22 pm »
So, here I am, trying to get anything from ettercap-ng to tcpdump working. Tried the libpcap in the feed, no luck. Built libpcap and related packages from source on the Z (C1k), still no luck. When I build ettercap-ng from the source, it doesn't run properly. TCPdump can't sniff promisc. regardless of whether I use the libpcap from the feed, or my own build. (I have a fairly robust native build environment on the Z-- at least I hope) The ettercap from the feed is also fairly useless when it comes to actually sniffing. This problem occurs regardless of whether I'm using my wifi card (prism2.5, hostap) or USB ethernet adapter (asix). Manually running ifconfig <interface> promisc has no noticeable effect either.

I was hoping to equip this Z as an all-out network audit toolkit (nmap, tcpdump, aircrack, void11, kismet, ettercap-ng, metasploit, nessus, dsniff, tcpick, ethereal, etc.) but at this point I can't even get the basics running.

Am I an idiot or is there something up here-- I'm not new to Linux, (or other *NIX-like OSes) but I haven't looked too far into these tools before, so maybe I'm pointing fingers at the wrong library...

Anyone have ideas?
(could this be an issue with libnet? I've tried the feed version and my own builds as well)

Thanks--

Ian

UPDATE: tcpdump seems to work correctly now [just tested it with the wifi, is it possible the asix drivers still won't do promiscuious-- I haven't tested it yet], but ettercap from the feed is still 95% ineffective, as is the version I built. I guess this means the problem lies in a different library... I'm just confused now

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Solved: Oz Hangs On Starting Pcmcia
« on: July 01, 2006, 10:01:40 am »
So, my akita hangs every time I run oz GPE or OPIE from my SD card(s), regardless of whether the install is direct or an image file. The last thing it gets to is Starting PCMCIA, then it hangs. I tried a complete flash erase, restore of factory image, and reinstall of OZ and the ROOTFS images to no avail. When I disable the PCMCIA script in init, it hangs on something else.

I'm starting to wonder if this isn't a hardware issue with my Akita

Anyone got ideas?

Thanks.

P.S.: Already searched the forums, google, and the OZ wikis to no avail.

EDIT: It was some wacky SD card issue. Switched to an old 1gb, had to re-do the home flash partition stuff too, but now all's good hopefully.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Oe Mirror Dead?

Still not up?!
Ugh, my Z has been in an unworkable (partially configured) state for 2 weeks now--
and I can't recover it to full functionality without the OZ files

General Discussion / Palm Zire 72 Running Linux & Qtopia
« on: June 23, 2006, 01:21:17 pm »
Go figure I just sold my zire to finance the 3200 I just bought...
Still, the only palm HW that entices me is the treo 650--
I booted GPE on that the other day with the stuff from shadowmite-- I had to recompile the kernel on the host machine just to get it to load. Kinda pointless to have your cell phone on a 2ft USB "leash" to your desktop-- especially when the phone doesn't work.

Still, it's progress, and the T650 is so far the only palm that can boot linux from the original, built-in bootloader.

But as to Palm compatibility for the Z, hasn't anyone recompiled POSE for one of the roms? (Maybe I'll do it...) Also, I saw a program for WinCE / ARM pocketpcs the other day that could run ARM-based palm software natively by emulating only the palmos API, not the target's CPU (ala Wine on X86). Maybe as linux-based PDAs start to penetrate consumer markets we'll see a similar program. (And speaking of which-- what about an ARM port of WINE with WinCE API emulation (instead of standard X86 Win32) for PocketPC compatibility? That'd be somewhat nifty as well.)

General Discussion / Newton Emulator On Sl-c1000

*Cough* Shame you need a ROM image for it.
I wonder where you could possibly go to find something as esoteric as an Apple Newton ROM image...

General Discussion / Pdaxrom Vs Oz Or Even Sharp As A Server?
« on: June 23, 2006, 01:06:26 pm »
Well, if you're just using the Z for server-style stuff, how about the OZ bootstrap rom-- CLI only by default, no extra bloat. Low in fat, zero calories, still crunchy and delicious with lots of packages! Only problem is the main OZ mirror has been down all week

I personally use a Mac Mini as my main home desktop, and as an environmentalist, I like to keep the power requirements of my network rack down (Didn't say anything about the 16cpu 220v 700-pound SGI ONYX rack in the garage!  ), so... 2 hacked WRT54Gs for the firewall, router, an old 50mhz sparc for SSH, and a hacked linksys NSLU2 for other network services.

Personally, if I were you, I'd get one of them (The NSLU2, not the ONYX   )-- seems to fit your needs well.

$60 from ebay, add a USB hard drive, cut a trace on the mainboard (to de-underclock it, not overclock), add UNSLUNG, and you have a 266mhz ARM based Linux box (behaves a lot like OZ-- debian based, uses iPkg) with 32mb ram, 2 USB ports, and 10/100 ethernet. Lots of premade packages, and it's a good build platform for the Z.
Have a look ==> Linux NSLU2 Web Site
Fanless, ~5watts if my memory serves, and you can get them for peanuts just about everywhere.

Peace out.

What's your opinion or facts without turning this into a flame war?

Currently, I'm using rc12 as a ntpd, sshd and webserver to the internet and internal.  I have a procmail, fetchmail and mutt setup, but I want an SSL pop server so I can send and receive mail remotely with one of my other zaurii using the stock mail app.  I see OZ 3.5.4.1 is close to completion and I am re-evaluating which ROM to use.  I want to compile a pop server for which rom I choose.

The cons with pdaxrom so far are
- I have a cron to restart ntpd everyday because it dies every couple of days
- once a month or two the desktop is frozen and I restart it using an ssh session.
- about once every two months the Z hard locks and has to be rebooted.

I am also in negotiations with my CFO (wife) for a mac mini which takes up much more power than a Z, but less than a light bulb.  It also has much more software options and might be more stable as a 24/7 server.

I run a dual G4 tower as a server in my garage.  The only time it has to reboot is for the occasional update that requires it.  It's running 10.3 server.  My firewall is an IBM eSeries server running smoothwall.  I've only had to reboot it once in two years because of a goof on my part.  Usually they just sit humming in the garage, adding a little ambient heat to the place, where I live, that's not a bad thing.  I've never actually done the math, but I'm pretty sure they only add 20-30 extra dollars a year to my electric bill.  Now the other six running computers....

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Oe Mirror Dead?
« on: June 22, 2006, 11:20:08 pm »
It's been irritating the hell out of me too
Trying to get my Z up and running (With OZ) before I go away for a trip next week, but no such luck.
Last time I was able to use it successfully was Monday.
The other mirrors are totally worthless. No RC4, no feed, nothing.
Then I tried the older hentges release-- also broken (for my purposes) and still no feed.
I'd compile some of my own packages, but like you, I can't get at the rest of the OE shit.

Anyhow, it's not just you, their datacenter ran out of fire extinguishers or something.

The Netherlands mirror of OpenEmbedded has been by far the fastest and most up-to-date available to me. However, connections to ewi546.ewi.utwente.nl have been timing out here for several days. I've been able to get some things from other sources but now it's preventing me from using bitbake because it wants to download a specific Qt/Embedded snapshot and can't so it dies. Does anyone know what's going on here (if anything) and when it will be fixed?

Thanks.

C1000/3x00 Hardware / Source For A Seagate 8gb Hd?

Didn't realize that. I'll give it a shot and let you know how it works.

EDIT: Looks like it won't work in the internal slot either. Same DriveReady SeekComplete errors.  Bummer. Oh Well, I needed a new thumb drive anyway.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=128731\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

That's a shame-- sorry the suggestion didn't work.

I'm still pretty sure the Z's internal is IDE mode though (They use those OEM only drives, like the iPod etc., AND there's an IDE controller chip, if my memory serves) but something else nasty might be at work on that drive. Someone should start a listing of known working replacement HDDs. Once I get some time off school this summer, maybe I will. I've got a box of MicroDrives here from old mp3 players, might as well try to put them to use on my 3200.

Cxx0 Hardware / Help: C750 Went Toes-up ... For No Reason?
« on: May 28, 2006, 11:42:19 pm »
This happened to my C1000 randomly too-- No signs of life, except D+M, no NAND partition info, etc... (Not even a battery charging light!)
I restored the NAND from an image using the D+M menu, and it works-- I'd definitely be worth it to try it on yours too.

Good luck-- I'd be curious to see if it works.

As to getting a file out of the current NAND on the device-- I'm going to say no (can anyone more experienced correct me on this?)-- it seems your NAND is pretty f*ed (It can't even find the partition information correctly!), so I'd doubt there'd be too much that can be recovered. Bite the bullet and restore it.

I have found it is a really bad idea to plug my cat into my Zaurus's USB port.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=126050\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

It's also good to avoid plugging the mains into it.

'It' being the Zaurus, or the cat?

C1000/3x00 Hardware / Source For A Seagate 8gb Hd?

I just bought one at Costco for $119. It happened to be in a Gigabank USB2 drive from I/O Magic. I've just popped it out of the case and tried putting it in the Z's CF slot. It doesn't want to be recognized. Looks like I'll have to do some more research to figure it out.

edit: FYI the drive is a Seagate model no. st68022CF, 8GB ST1.2 Drive.

edit Again: Looks like this is one of those IDE mode only drives. When I put it in the CF slot of the Z and I get a bunch of DriveReady SeekComplete errors. Also on the drive itself it says "For Embedded Applictations Only".  Oh well, Looks like I have an 8GB USB drive...
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=128596\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Why can't you just replace your Z's internal 4gb with the 8gb? (I'm assuming it's the 3100 in your sig) The Z's internal bay, IIRC, is one of those IDE mode ones-- as is the drive. Then make yourself a 4gb usb hard drive from the old one-- or better yet hold onto it in case the 8gb craps out.

Anyhow, the ominous large, red ascii "NG!" is concerning me-- should it be?

[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=128133\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Subject to correction by the real experts on the forum, I have had that error routinely, the number of blocks (4 in my case) has remained the same rather than increasing, and it hasn't caused a problem. I think that it means that some small number of blocks in memory are bad and have been flagged and are not used. The only consequence I've seen is that I have sometimes found it necessary to specify a couple of MB more memory for the root partition than usually recommended when flashing a new ROM or I will get boot errors.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=128164\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Thanks for the response-- I haven't had issues yet, and hopefully I won't. *Fingers Crossed*
on the other hand, my new 3200 shows no bad blocks. Hopefully it will stay that way, and the 4 on the 1000 stay within normal tolerance.

In the meantime, on a related note, I'm perfecting a little script for a few roms (cacko, pdaxrom-- one version of each tested so far) that moves and links frequently accessed files (logs, etc.) to another storage medium (harddrive, sd, etc) to prevent internal flash wear. I might add a ramdisk portion that's saved at shutdown too. If people show interest, when it's done and tested, I'll release it. It's nothing most of us couldn't do on our own, but hopefully this will make things "quick and painless."

So, I was playing around in the D+M menu on my "new" used "less than 10 hours" sl-c1000 from ebay (yes, I have my doubts-- for other reasons as well)
and I ran the NAND Bad Count from the sum menu. I got the result you see attached (that line of interest is "8 4 0 4" if you can't see-- block 8, 4 init, 0 after, 4 total bad blocks)

Anyhow, the ominous large, red ascii "NG!" is concerning me-- should it be?

Thanks in advance--

[ EDIT - I just realized I should have put this in the hardware section. Sorry!    ]

Ian

P.S.: As a new member, and someone who's beginning to love these Sharps (replaced my debian-powered libretto 50ct), I hope to more active on these forums in the future, and once I get familiar with the platform, I hope to contribute to development. (Installing the cross-compilers now on my desktop). Either way, I was very happy to find this site, as it seems to be an invaluable resource!
