6000 - Tosa / How To Restore 6000 To Original State?
« on: February 04, 2009, 05:32:59 pm »
Hi,

I did fsck the card and it seemed OK... Tried different cards and same result, flashing with the opie-image worked, flashing with the e-image reported Format error.

Can't help with the flashing details per se, but the fact that the card worked before doesn't mean it's necesarily okay now.

I would fsck the card, and also do md5sum on the files to make sure they aren't corrupt.

6000 - Tosa / How To Restore 6000 To Original State?
« on: February 03, 2009, 07:32:47 pm »
Hi, everybody!

Just a stupid newbie's first question (or two): Does a NAND restore also reset the Z to its default partitioning?

The first question is a result of my attemp to flash my SL-6000 with the e-image (Enlightment). I downloaded the image from G:\Zaurus\www.openzaurus.org\download\3.5.4\images\tosa, located an updater.sh at Hentges site (3.5.4), renamed the e-image-3.5.4-tosa.rootfs.jffs2 file to initrd.bin and placed the stuff on a CF. .The power on /OK button gave me the update-menu and I started the update procedure. Everything went OK, to start with:
- the Sharp screen appeared
- the init: version 2.78 booting message appeared
- Zaurus CF updater said:
kernel 0% ................ 100%
Sucess!
RO file system
Flash erasing...done
0% .............. 100% ERROR:flash write
Error!
Please reset

Then the Z (after some time while I wrote this text) decided to boot up on its own, INIT: version 2.86 booting blablabla... The first time it became stuck on a black screen with an X in the middle of it and nothing more happened. The next time and all following times (even after a Format from update menu followed by a new re-flashing of e-image) it comes to tosa login: and loops there. I can log in, but there is no GUI. The green light flashes.

So, now comes my second question: have I done something wrong in my flashing procedure? The "ERROR:flash write" message after 100% seems weird. Did the flash succeed or not? I have read everything I could find on the subject and it shouldn't be the CF card. I have done flashing of my 5500 and 5600 before (switching to OZ and then back to Sharp/Cacko) so at least the card should be working. ;-)

Any help very appreciated.

/Z

P.S. I am trying to gather pieces of various ROMs for the Z-s. I have noticed that much of the stuff has disappeared from the net recently, so I am just trying to put together a collection of a few ROMs and other Z-related software.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Compat-libs?
« on: March 08, 2007, 09:52:01 am »
Hi, everybody!

Could you give me a clue about which modules from the OZ feed I should install that will enable me to install some of the Sharp ROM apps? I know people refer to them as compat-libs - but which modules are we then talking about?

Thanks /ZJ

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Oz 3.5.4.x On Collie/poodle - Does It Work?

3. anybody who succeded in installing Sharp ROM apps and OZ? (Btw, do the ipk-formats differ between Sharp and OZ?) Or is it so that they cannot be installed due to different ways of emulating FPU?

At least this is a question I can answer.

The package format is indeed different, however this will not confuse the package manager.
You can install and run Sharp ROM apps under OZ/Opie. All you need are the compat-libs.
The interesting thing is: Your mileage will vary depending on the app you are trying to run.
Opera for instance runs smooth, Jeode maybe and Hancom Sheet will not due to the aforementioned FPU emulation.
The good news: A large number of applications found in the Zaurus software archives have been made available to be built and run natively under OpenZaurus without using the compat-libs.
So the remaining things are the commercial apps for which no source code is available.

Thanks for your answer!

Which packages do represent the compat-libs? I know I installed some packages I thought were compatibility libs, but it didn't get me very far in installing the packages meant for Sharp ROM.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Oz 3.5.4.x On Collie/poodle - Does It Work?
« on: March 05, 2007, 09:11:16 am »
Hi, everybody!

Sorry for asking noob questions, but well... if I don't ask, I'll never learn, isn't that so?

Anyway, I have been a user of Zaurus collie (SL-5500 & SL-5000) for quite some time, but with the SHARP ROM. I also tried OZ/Opie, Cacko and pdaXrom some time ago. I realized the OZ lacked WP-software, it didn't even have the Wordpad-style Hancom Word installed in it. I tried to figure out whether I could install Hancom stuff under OZ, but... well... I failed. I saw lots of info about compatibility with such and such stuff, compatibility libraries and so on - nothing worked for me. So, willingly or not, I reverted back to Sharp ROM.

A few days ago I found my since long forgotten spare collie and also a poodle, acquired at the same time. I decided it was time to make a new try with OZ. So I downloaded lots of stuff and started installing. The install procedure was essentially flawless on the collie and... well... it succeded a couple of times on the poodle.

I still didn't figure out how to install Hancom stuff under OZ - and as far as I can see, nobody has... (?)

Then I tried to start using OZ in different ways, writing texts, trying to install additional software and doing what people use to do when they play around with stuff. Almost immediately I had a few hangups, which meant resetting the device. No problem, I thought - and I went on playing. More hangups. Sometimes hangups after power off/on, sometimes when running Package Manager, sometimes when doing some other, quite innocent stuff. Somewhere I read that if you run out of memory on your (internal) root f/s, you can get very weird behavior like that. Then I read about Hentges ROM which has the f/s on an SD-card. GREAT!!! I have a few SD-cards lying at home, brand new, ranging from 128M to 512M. I downloaded Hentges images, flashed it down onto both machines - and now I had my root f/s on the SD card. BUT... then hangups continued.

So now I have reverted both my toys to Sharp ROM. One funny thing that I saw with the poodle: my personal info (i.e. my name in the address book as well as my city in Date/time setup) entered BEFORE flashing to OZ was present AFTER flashing back to SHARP ROM again.

So now I have a few things that bother me:

1. did I make a mistake in flashing the ROM? I thought that flashing erased everything from the machine. I do not think the hangups are part of normal operating procedure either...
2. anybody who has installed OZ 3.5.4 (or 3.5.4.2) on collie/poodle and experienced similar hangups?
3. anybody who succeded in installing Sharp ROM apps and OZ? (Btw, do the ipk-formats differ between Sharp and OZ?) Or is it so that they cannot be installed due to different ways of emulating FPU?

Lots of questions, but if I don't ask them, I'll never know the answers... *s*

Error linking '/media/card/packages/opt/QtPalmtop/opera/start/index.html' to '/opt/QtPalmtop/opera/start/index.html'

Some errors happen naturally - for example if the file it's trying to link already exists.

How much space do you have on / ? (use 'df')

It may be that you've run out of space and that's messing things up.

Let's see:

The file/link /opt/QtPalmtop/opera/start/index.html does not exist, in fact not even /opt/QtPalmtop/opera directory exists. The file /media/card/packages/opt/QtPalmtop/opera/start/index.html exists and there is nothing wrong with it. I noticed that when I try to create a link to the index.html file (or any other file in any other writeable place) I cannot do "ln", but I must use "ln -sf". Is that the problem?

Usable space: Package Manager reported something like 1300+ k free, df reports 1356k free - so I believe there is a little more than 1M free. It's why I install on SD. Hmmmm...

P.S. Just to clarify: I am a total novice as far as Unix/Linux are concerned and thus I hope I make a very trivial mistake somewhere, somehow... D.S.

In my desperation I did:
# mkdir /opt/QtPalmtop/opera
# mkdir /opt/QtPalmtop/opera/start

Now I do not get errors from the installation, but the software still does not work. The error text is now (I recovered the error text by starting opera from command prompt):
opera: symbol lookup error: opera: undefined symbol: _7QString.shared_null

Some libraries missing or in wrong version? Again' I don't know anything about Linux, so it is just a wild guess...

5x00 General discussions / Probs With Oz 3.5.4 On Collie Sl-5500?
« on: May 31, 2006, 11:57:37 am »
Hi,

I have an SL-5500, originally with Sharp ROM. Then I reflashed it with Cacko, worked OK. I tried pdaXrom, did not work OK, never got past the "empty folders" stage. Now I tried to flash it with OZ 3.5.4.

The installation process worked OK. The system came up and everything was fine until I started to install other software on my machine. The stage called "Linking packages installed in: sd" (I install on the SD) gives me following errors:
Error linking '/media/card/packages/opt/QtPalmtop/opera/start/index.html' to '/opt/QtPalmtop/opera/start/index.html'

This is not just one error, but _LOADS_ of them! Probably one such error for every file copied to SD while installing Opera.

How do I proceed from here? I tried and retried installing OZ over and over again, the errors remain. I tried to install some other ipk's with the result that the standard menus got foobar, up to the point when I had duplicate entries and almost none of the apps on the menus worked anymore.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks /ZJ

Hi, everybody!

I have just flashed my Zaurus 5500 with pdaXrom. So far so good, no problems in flashing process itself...

But then... when the machine boots, I get into a login prompt. I log in as root, then execute "startx"... and what I get is an X-desktop with lots of folders, but all folders are empty, except for a web browser and a terminal emulator.

So what's the general idea? Do I have to download and install the ipk's from the feed? How do I do it? I guess there is some command line interface to install things. Will they appear on the X-menu afterwards?

I know those are stupid questions, but unless you ask them, you'll never learn!
