Sharp ROMs / How Can I Edit /root/.profile
« on: January 20, 2008, 05:54:58 pm »
Thank You Jon_J,

That did the trick.  One of these days I'm going to give Meanie his own folder in my bookmarks directory.

If I try to rename or delete .profile I get : Read-only file system.
but I'm going to guess that /root is part of a filesystem that may be used for initial booting but is kept read-only.

Drake01,
Thanks for the reply. I'm sorry, but what I meant by 'And lastly changing /etc/.profile or any other .profile has no effect' included /home/root/.profile and any other .profile that I could find by going to su and typing find / -name .profile*:
    /home/etc/.profile
    /home/root/.profile
    /root/.profile[/li]
In at least Ubuntu you can sudo  edit /root/.profile

Sharp ROMs / How Can I Edit /root/.profile
« on: January 20, 2008, 09:48:47 am »
I'm using a SL-C3200 with the Sharp ROM and I want to change the su prompt from '# ' to '\w #'. (I like to know where I am, I get forgetful sometimes.  ) It would also be nice to be able to some aliases.

If I go to the su prompt and type joe /root /.profile joe says that it's read only.

Yet, from su I type ls -l /root.profile and get:
    -rw-rw-r--    1 root     root         272 Jan 14 2006 .profile[/li]
which as far as I remember means it's read/write for the root user.

If I try to rename or delete .profile I get : Read-only file system.

And lastly changing /etc/.profile or any other .profile has no effect

Worked brilliantly! Thanks so much for this; simple when you know what to do, completely baffling when you don't... If you go through the process, gaijin Handango gives you the option of downloading 1.7.9 at the end anyway, so it's not essential to do it from the Japanese page.

Nick.

Your more than welcome.

to be honest though I figured it out through blind scrambling.  I can't read Japanese either.

How-to Register Tree!Explorer QT Plus+ for for people who can't read Japanese

Goto the authors Japanese homepage at:
http://www.tree-explorer.com/zausl/teqt_p.php

Scroll down to and click the Handango Japan option. (You might want to also d/l ver. 1.7.9 while you are there since this is the version the reg key is for.)

Click the longer green button next to the Tree!Explorer image.

On the menu at the bottom of the page select Handango.com.

At the top of the page click on cart.

EDIT: I've made graphical instruction, that can be found at:

I'm having a problem with the copy of "initrd.bin (52MB) - build 5.4.7" I get from http://www.tyrannozaurus.com/feed/pdaXii13/akita/.

The copy I get when I download it seems to be corrupt.  W I try to install it, it gets to about 90% and then quits.  I've tried downloading it at least 5 or 6 times. I even used different browsers.

I'd be willing to try build 5.4.6 but I haven't been able to find a copy.

Edit: I forgot to mention I trying to install 'Sally' on a C3200

Don't use a browser.  Use wget instead.  It works like a charm everytime when I download them that way.

HoloVector, Thanks for the idea but it seems to have no difference.

Check the md5sums to make sure wheter your download is ok or something else is wrong.

louigi600, The md5sums are correct.

What I've tried:

Restored original ROM (SL-C3200-ENG-NAND-original)
Cleaned the hd (NAND menu > Backup Restore Menu > HDD 00 Clear)
Re-fdisked (type 6) and formated (mkfs.msdos /dev/hda1) a 512M CF card
Copied:
. . updater.sh (25KB) - version 0.2
. . tools.tar (4.2MB)
. . initrd.bin (52MB) - build 5.4.7
to the CF and then re-checked summed them
Then followed Meanies instructions @ [a href=\"http://www.users.on.net/~hluc/myZaurus/pdaxii13.html]http://www.users.on.net/~hluc/myZaurus/pdaxii13.html[/url]

Edit:
When installing the ROM it gets to about 90%, at which point I get the "Opps!!!"

did you resize your NAND root partition to 121?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=164844\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Meanie,
Thank you, I got it this time.

However, I did have to rerun the ROM setup 3 times.  The kicker might have been that the 3rd time I when to the NAND menu and ran Option 3 "Fix loader 64MB limit . . .".

Now to play with it.

5x00 Hardware / Scratches on the display getting worse...
« on: January 04, 2004, 09:40:12 pm »
Even though I do use a screen protector, I have been using a home made teflon stylus.  I get the teflon from really cheap mechanical store brand pencils I buy at CVS (east coast (at least)) drug store.  I have been using them for years on an old Jornada 680.  The only scratch I have ever gotten is when I dropped it on the point and forgot to make sure it hadn\'t picked up and grit.
