OpenMoko / Android Ported To Openmoko Devices

Since nobody else posted this I figured I should.  Andriod is up and running on the FreeRunner and Neo1973 Om devices:

Still some warts, but hopefully those will be ironed out soon.

What I would personally like to see is the Dalvik VM and the other runtimes  in a lean package to allow for Android apps to run on any flavor of Linux.

OpenMoko / Fdom

It's not a fork, though it does have some additions that apparently will not make it to OM (such as Raster's keyboard).

Raster's keyboard is included in the default OM2008.8, it is just disabled and the Qtopia keyboard is used instead.  I don't really understand why when illume is way better in all aspects than the Qtopia keyboard, but I'm not running the project.

Yeah, it's 'mostly' good for me.  There is a loooong way to go and just as several of my friends have stated, why isn't there some consolidation on embedded Linux projects?  Why not add on to Maemo or some other fully usable project?

OpenMoko / Manual Install Package

I have a problem on my network, I have a proxy and I'm not able to configure neo to download pkg with:
opkg update
opkg upgrade

By default /etc/resolv.conf is not populated with good info if you are masquerading through a desktop.  You will need to put your name servers into /etc/resolv.conf to get name resolution.  If you have an authenticating proxy though I'm not sure that opkg can handle that.

I don't think there is any such thing as a stable image for OpenMoko now, but OM2008.8 is the latest release of what will be the stable image in a few months.  Raster's image has a newer revision of the illume keyboard, which is in my opinion a much better software keyboard.  


You should update your uboot as well, quite a few bugs squashed since the phone was released.

Make sure that you are booted into NOR (hold Aux and then press power) while flashing uboot.

Development is moving right along, but probably not fast enough for some people, there are still some fairly annoying bugs.  I've been using Raster's image + Zecke's updates + This theme ( http://52grad.de/.stuff/freerunner/ ) daily for 2 weeks or so.  It is still definitely not a "normal" users phone, but it is good enough to start testing your application ideas.

I assume you are running the default image on the device?  As I recall the package is called openmoko-dates2 in the repository.  You will need to install the package from the command line via the terminal on the phone or via SSH with the USB cable ( http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/USB_Networking ).

You also might try upgrading to the OM2008.8 image:

I recommend using this image from Raster:

and adding Zecke's testing repositories to your /etc/opkg/* files:

The via SSH over USB cable run:

opkg update ; opkg upgrade

Then reboot your phone.

Starting DFU DOWNLOAD to partition "factory"

Hmm,

Openmoko Flasher.app/Contents/MacOS/dfu-util -a rootfs -R -D rootfs_filename.jffs2

Should be the command to flash the rootfs and I don't know where you are getting that "factory" partition name from.  After the -a option you should be specifying 'rootfs' as the partition to flash.

Yes, it is possible.  There are some audio quality issues that are being looked into at the moment with A2DP.

Have you read the old threads about the Aurora solar panels?  They might be helpful.

And one of my friends has been using the Solio H1000s with his Nokia N800 and loves it.  I might get something like this for the FreeRunner at some point.  Very cool btw.

In the interest of keeping people informed before they get a phone and get upset if there are problems.  It looks like there are some issues with some SIM cards:

They haven't tracked it down yet, but it looks like it is not carrier specific.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Mencoder - How Convert Wmv To Avi

I don't think you can do that on the Z.  My understanding is that mplayer uses the Windows codec via Wine to play any WMV9 files.  Since this codec cannot work on the Z, because the Z uses an ARM processor not x86, I don't see how you would be able to get the data out of the WMV file.  You could convert the files on an x86 Linux or Windows system into an AVI and then play that on your Z though.

I guess I can install whatever WM I want after the fact.  A pre-configured wbar with one of those config tools you linked to in the wbar thread would be nice.  It would give pdaXrom a bit of a new snazzy look.
