Halx, could you help me? Reversing the Japanese sentence example dictionary would be cool.

That"s not as straightforward as it might seem.  Just take your last sentence above.  How would you index such a sentence (by algorithm)?

Also a search for components of kanji would be nice. This isn't needed but it would be cool if I could search for kanji by stroke order and readings etc...

I"m not quite sure what you mean.  WIth conditional search you can search with several keys, e.g.

Er, does that mean the kanjidic files are wrong, or the dictionaries?
Do I need ztenv?

It works as expected with ztenv as well as Jamming and Kotonoko.
I guess the problem is in zten (and it's derivative zdic).

No, it's a different version done by Chris Kerr.

but none of the bitmaps work. They are all black.

You should tell us at least the reader software+version number you are using...

The version for the example sentences - is 1.2 the version for the full file and 1.3 for the subset?

Well, in principal this is the version number of the script but the subset has been generated with 1.3 the full set with the older version 1.2.

But I have a small request: Could you please put the version number in the filename again?

I also would like to have it that way but Jim Breen who hosts the file wants them without version numbers.  Easier to update he said.

The Dictionary software I think is developed by Sharp but in any case it is there to contribute to SL-C3000 sales (just as the 860 version was for the 860).

The dictionary reader itself, called zdic, is like its predecessor zten under the GPL.  The sources
are available.  The dictionaries are cetainly not and probably as you suggest only legally usable on the device you bought.

Hello all,

I'm proud to announce a new EPWING conversion of Jim Breen's (Thank you again!) Kanjidic
in 4 languages to be found at my EPWING dictionaries site.

What's new in version 1.7:

* large bitmaps (88x88 pixel) for all kanji
* search by classical radical via menu
* all kanji lists now prefixed by stroke counts
* several small bug fixes

A note about the Perl conversion scripts :
I implemented a simple markup interface to FreePWING which should make it easier to modify/write own conversion scripts.  The Perl module is part of the scripts' archive and all the scripts make use of it.  I also tried to write some documentation but for examples have a look at the scripts.

Off Topic forum / Bitmap Fonts From Ttf

Hello everybody,

I hope somebody from this forum could answer the following question.

I'd like to convert some nice TTF kanji fonts into bitmaps of appropriate size and use them (in particular for a kanji dictionary).  From what I heard in some countries bitmap fonts are not copyrightable, while others allow copyrights on font shapes.  But what if I want to bitmap a freely downdable but possibly copyrighted font?

A subset file for the example sentences is also available now.  It's about 11.4MB in size and could be interesting to people with memory restrictions.

Hello everybody,

I am proud to announce another set of updated EPWING dictionaries    .

KanjiDic now comes in four languages.  Also, the dictionary supports links to kanji variants or alternatively prints the variants as bitmap graphics.

EDICT, ENAMDICT and examples sentences have been created with the latest versions of these dictionaries.  In addition, I fixed a bug in EDICT.

More detail can be found in the ChangeLog files.

I find quite a few useful words are missing from Jim Breen's edict file. I suppose the best solution would be to get them added to the official dictionary - is anyone familiar with Jim's policy for adding entries?

Either submit it via New Entry Submission or discuss it on sci.lang.japan.

I know that all EDICT language version are used by someone but what about KanjiDic?
Is anybody reading this forum using the Spanish and/or Portuguese KanjiDic version?

I uploaded the Portuguese version.  Still a test version, though.  I have to resolve a few issues.

Does anybody know how to convert Kuten code to JIS?

If I want to use a txt dictionary or other type what would you recommend?

I like EDICT in EPWING format but I can't edit it.
As none of the program have a jump button. EDICT has everything written after the kanji  Just not enought entries

I can open the EDICT from Jim's site and read it perfectly on my Japanese machine. I've almost finished reversing it too (in excel (English to Japanese)).

If you know how to write EPWING files on Windows Xp please tell me. Or even a way to use the dictionary info I have on my SL-C3000.


BTW I've only had the Zaurus for 6 days now but I've learnt so much.

I use several commerical dictionaries so I don't need/want to modify existing entries.

If you really want to edit EDICT it would probably be nice to contribute to this project, e.g. via the online form on Jim Breen's site.

What is a "jump button"?  If you are referring to the jump feautures in modern denshi jisho it is usually called cut-and-paste on other platforms.

"Write" EDICT files: You mean create EPWING file by conversion from existing data?  The program is called ebstudio.
