Use the file command to find out whether it is a gz or ar package.

The general procedure to set up ssh so you don't need to enter a password is:

1. Generate key DSA pairs on each system (ssh-keygen -d)
2. Put the contents of id_dsa.pub on one machine into the authorized_keys2 file on the other machine (and vice versa if required).
3. You should now be able to ssh/scp into the machine you put the public key onto

NB# all the files are located in ~/.ssh
NB# don't set a password when prompted while generating key pairs
NB# you will probably have to create the authorized_keys2 file
NB# if for some reason you want to use RSA instead of DSA, RTFM
NB# you may have to play around with which keys go on which machine
       a few times until you get it right and understand how it all works

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Remote X display

On Debian, change /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc from:

exec /usr/bin/X11/X -dpi 100 -nolisten tcp

to

exec /usr/bin/X11/X -dpi 100

In other words, allow your X server to accept tcp connections...

Zaurus - pdaXrom / have we come up with a fix for the DATE/TIME yet?

This worked for me:

• remove /etc/localtime if it exists (so that you are working in UTC)
• use ntpdate to set the system clock to the correct time in UTC (or date --set)
• use hwclock to set the hardware clock from the system clock(ie: hwclock --systohc)
• tell hwclock to work in UTC (ie: hwclock --utc)
• copy /usr/share/zoneinfo/whatever/whatever from a *nix box to /etc/localtime
• turn zaurus on and off and enjoy having the correct time

The eraser is also a move/copy tool. You use the eraser to select what you want. To delete it, push the enter button. If you want to move it, just drag it around. To copy, use the copy button. It's a bit of a non-standard way of doing things, but once you get the hang of it, it's fine.

6000 - Tosa / SD and CF memory Questions

With regard to the speed of the cards, I have heard elsewhere on this board that the Zaurus (the SL-Cxx0 series at least) can't make full use of the available speed because they only have one channel or something....

In any case I have some "real" test data available in this thread.

My Hagiwara 10Mbits/sec SD card writes data at 10Mbits/sec and reads it at 12.6Mbits/sec. My PQI 40x CF card writes at 17Mbits/sec and reads at 15Mbits/sec.

I'm guessing all the stats you've quoted for manufacturers speeds are in Megabits per seconds, and not Megabytes per second...

In all your research, you must have come accross the problems a lot of people have with Sandisk cards - although I havn't heard any bad reports on the Sandisk Ultra II cards yet...

If/when you do purchase a card, I'd be very interested to see what sort of read/write speeds the card is capable of in your 6000.

Accessories / How fast is your CF/SD card?

I'd been looking to purchase a 512Mb SD card for a while and the thread Preferred SD Card got my interest

I found a few Toshiba 512 MB SD cards selling for around $90 ( http://www.pricewatch.com/1/226/5642-1.htm ).

I think I'm gonna buy one......

I got the card yesterday.

I have to eat my words from an earlier post because this thing is made in Taiwan, not Japan. In any case, I was keen to see how it would perform against my 10Mb/sec Hagiwara SD card, so I ran a few rudimentary tests. I also ran the tests on my 40x PQI 256Mb CF card to see how it compared. All the tests were done in my SL-C760.

Is there a way for mean to beam a file to my Palm Vx?

- Select the "Files" tab
- Find the file you want to transfer
- Hold the stylus down on the file until a popup menu appears
- Select "Beam File"

Is this what you meant?

However, I still carry my old Palm with me everywhere I go. It makes the perfect timepiece (with the ClockPop extension) as I can quickly whip it out of my pocket, flip open the cover, push one button and there's the time. Getting the Z out of my pocket to find out the time is a bit overkill for me.

I have to ask the question...haven't you ever considered just buying a watch?

*LOL* Hahahaaa - Well, no not really - I havn't worn a wrist watch for 20+ years. I just don't like wrist watches - or bracelets or any other crap around my wrists. I do like the idea of an old style pocket watch, but I don't wear a waistcoat

P.S. To others: yes, the Z especially the C series is a kick-*** machine/laptop-replacement/killer, etc... but as some have noted, there is no need to limit it to do only certain things, but not *simpler* things like PIM. If it can have a fantastic browser, if it can even host Apache/mySQL, why not expect it to run good PIM software? I want to TOTAL laptop replacement, not one for programming/toy with, and then have to keep a Palm or PPC around just for PIM software (and/or medical references, etc.)!

I couldn't agree more. My primary reason for getting a Z was to have a linux box in my pocket. pdaXrom has really opened up the potential of this machine wil the ability to run X. As far as using the Z as a PIM/PDA, when KO/PI hit the scene it really made a big difference - I'd tried using the standard Calandar software several times, but couldn't get the hang of using it regularly. I've just switched back to pdaXrom from CackoQT, but did use qpdf and freenoteqt on a daily basis - in three months I have used freenoteqt to take over 300 pages of lecture notes which are now beautifully printed and bound - I couldn't do that on my Palm.

However, I still carry my old Palm with me everywhere I go. Getting the Z out of my pocket to find out the time is a bit overkill for me. There's also two programs I use daily on the Palm which I havn't found a replacement for on the Z - MaTireLire (simple finance tracker) and MathUPro (Programmable RPN calculator). I'm going to give Grisbi a try for the accounting, but it's not perfect and is a bit "feature rich" for my needs. If I can get x48 re-arranged so it fits into 640x480 then I may just put the Palm to rest.

I can see a time in the not too distant future when the Zaurus will be  able to provide the best of both worlds, and I think it's pretty clear from the activity on this board alone, that there are plenty of people working towards such a goal.

It kinda runs, but will not load my rom, extracted from an IBM C3 Workpad (ie: Palm Vx). The xcopilot site appears to have disappeared, but get the impression that it only supports upto Palm III roms???

General Discussion / Changing path in .profile

your .profile only gets read once when you log in - this lets you set up environment variables and stuff that you want to be the same across all shells you might use during your login session.

When you su into root, the root .profile is not read because it is not a login shell. Try "su - root" which will force a login shell and you will see the difference.

You will want to put your path modifications for root into .bashrc which gets read every time you start a new shell.

Cxx0 Hardware / Longest rang cf card? Senao vs. Ambicom

I use a Senao SL-2511CF card in my SL-C760 and a "Long Range" Senao SL-2511CD Plus PC Card in my desktop PC (I notice that the current range of products are NL-*).

I wish I could say that I've done all sorts of testing and analysis, but I havn't. I just use the wireless network around the house and it works great. However, as soon as I step out the front door and put six inches of bricks and concrete between the Z and the PC, I lose connectivity instantly - and the front door is only about 15m from the PC. (I've also got an Orinoco Gold PC card, and around the house, performance is the same).

I suspect that in a large open environment, things would be a bit different. It's a pity the SL-2511CD doesn't have an external antenna connection, as it would probably make a very good card for long range point to point networks.

The best thing I can say about the SL-2511CF card is that it's protrusion from the zaurus is very small.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / pdaXrom Calculator with RPN ported

I've never used a TI calculator before - been a HP devotee for many years... But I decided to have a look and see what it was all about.....

The TI-92 looks very cool, and yes I agree, should fit into 640x480 nicely.


Any efforts to port a TI-92 emulator would be appreciated by at least one person.
