I'm thinking of making the big switch from my QTopia ROM to another ROM (possibly pdaXrom) so that I can run Thunderbird, Firefox, etc...

But this isn't a decision to be made casually, especially I thought I've heard of people making bricks out of their Zaurii by performing the ROM installation incorrectly.

So, what ROM is the best and why?

Which ROM offers the most Linux capability and looks and behaves the most like a full Linux desktop counterpart?  KDE looks pretty cool, but I'm guessing they don't have that for the Zaurus yet...

Do any of the ROMs run OpenOffice?  Which ones can run Mozilla's Thunderbird and Firefox?

Let the battle begin!

You can use Firefox, Thunderbird and OpenOffice without switching ROM. That's what I am doing on my stock Sharp ROM. For details have a look at my website.

As per this thread, I agree that there is no best ROM. They all depend on individual's needs.  Switching ROMs is like wiping your whole OS on a PC and reinstalling from scratch which has put me off cause it also destroys your partitions and files. This probably is not a problem for most Zauri since they don't have a harddisk to worry about, but on the C3000 this is a nightmare. Just my 5c

Thanks for the link.  I'm reading [a href=\"http://www.users.on.net/~hluc/myZaurus/]http://www.users.on.net/~hluc/myZaurus/[/url] with great anticipation on how to install OpenOffice and Firefox/Thunderbird on my QTopia.  Thanks.

I won't actually register a vote here, because there is no best rom. This weeks best is next weeks also ran. Its amazing the amount of development going on at the moment. Very cool!

I would put a negative vote against tkcROM if I could, not because its crap, which it isn't, but just because it isn't actively developed any more.

When I had my 5500, OZ was by far and away the best rom I tried on it. But things may have changed since then.

On the c7x0, Cacko 1.22 lite or pdaxrom are the ones I have most experience of. I'm currently using pdaxrom, only because I got bored of the qtopia user interface. I like the customisability of X. I looked at GPE, but I wasn't sure which, if any, applications would work on there outside of those supplied in the feed.

After quite a short period of experimentation, it was clear that I could do everything on pdaxrom that I was doing with my Z using Cacko 1.22 lite. So that's my day to day rom at the moment and I'm happy as the proverbial pig in sh**.

By the way, should you not list Watapon on there?

Mike.

I've never heard of Watapon before.

I'm confused... I thought Cacko and PdaXRom were both different ROMs.  If so, then how can you have Cacko "on" pdaXrom?  (I must not understand what pdaXrom is....)  Is Cacko just a desktop environment (like KDE for knoppix?), and pdaXrom is the linux and libraries underneath?

Software / What is the best Zaurus E-mail program?
« on: February 27, 2005, 08:45:09 pm »
...but I like my SUV e-mail program.

Can the new pine do inline graphics and sound?  How embedded video and color?

I'm sure the thunderbird discussion has been here before somewhere but I couldn't find it.  Is it because it reall hasn't been discused before or do people just not like it that much?  ...or has noone ever thought of running Thunderbird on the Zaurus before?

Specifically, I'm thinking of the following arangement:

Linux Live CD (with Mozilla thunderbird, Firefox and Sunbird on maybe Knoppix) with a USB SD card adapter and my SD card.  All of the e-mail and settings are on the card and I card view and download new e-mail from any computer I happen to be at (using the live Linux CD) and my Zaurus.  It's my new idea of mobility... or was it "Nobility"?

It's interesting that so much time is spent trying to get PDA programs to act more like desktop programs... and yet there often isn't the thought of simply taking the desktop programs and running them directly on the PDA itself.  That's the beauty of Linux PDA's! (especially the one with VGA screens, huge harddrives, 400+ MHz processors, and clamshell keyboards...     )

I'm using Firefox, Thunderbird, and while soon be using Sunbird on my desktop.  Forget about the world of "syncing" PDAs with the desktop and instead let the PDA BECOME the desktop.

...or am I alone in my dream?

Software / Mozilla Thunderbird, Firebird, And Sunbird For Z?

Firefox is available in the x11 feed for OpenZaurus, I have a 5500 so it'd be way too big to fit on my screen.

pdaXrom also has it.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=68758\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Why don't they have it for QTopia?  What's are the core linux differences between OpenZaurus/pdaXrom and QTopia?  Why does some stuff only work on one or the other?

...or would the OpenZaurus and pdaXrom Firefox work on QTopia?

What about Thunderbird?  Is there a reason why it might not work?

Software / Mozilla Thunderbird, Firebird, And Sunbird For Z?
« on: February 26, 2005, 06:50:08 pm »
This may be a stupid question, but why don't we have a build of Mozilla Firefox (Browser), Thunderbird (E-Mail) and Sunbird (Calendar) for the Zaurus (or do we and I just missed it?)?  These products look set to overtake Internet Explorer (IE), Outlook Express (OE) and possibly even Outlook & Outlook Calendar in an event that only happens once every decade!

Has this subject already been discussed elsewhere?  Does the Zuarus have enough power (400+ MHz), memory (64 MB Ram), disk capacity (4+ GB and up), and display resolution (640x480 VGA) to handle these?  If so, wouldn't that give the Zuarus the kind of software that would make them almost supperior to their Windows desktop counterparts?

Maybe the Zaurus could then stand on its own as a computer and not just a cool-looking appendage of a desktop computer.

What are your thoughts?  What are some of the facts on this matter?

Is the Mozilla Suite's source code available?  Are they open source?  Do we have the power and ability to compile them for the Zaurus?

This may turn into an exciting topic!

Software / What is the best Zaurus E-mail program?
« on: February 26, 2005, 06:43:24 pm »
What's the story with Thunderbird and Zaurus?  Is Thunderbird a good e-mail solution for the Zaurus?  Is the VGA 640x480 layout large enough for the Thunderbird layout?  Is the machine fast enough?  Is 64 MB enough memory?

Also... is Thunderbird open-source?  Could Mozilla of today become the microsoft of tomorrow?  (I don't know so I have to ask).

Could Mozilla's Thunderbird (E-Mail), Sunbird (Calendar), and Firebird (Browser) become the new standard for the Zaurus backbone?  I searched for topics that may have already discussed this and couldn't find many.

Could thunderbird be compiled for the QTopia environment?  (I don't understand the differences between the various environments and why some software works on some and not on others).

Can someone enlighten me?

Thanks,

Software / Email Client with secure connection? (+ more )

This may be labeled as a "newbie question", but why can't we just get a binary of Thunderbird for QTopia?  Would Thunderbird be a good e-mail solution for this?

For your viewing pleasure, here's a 30 second clip from CSI: NY's Tri-Borough episode produced via the above process:

 [ Invalid Attachment ]

P.S. That's 30 seconds... squeezed into 1,177,604 bytes!!!
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=64103\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

MPEG (MPEG-1) is so... well... 1980's.

MPEG-4 can encode higher quality at half that bitrate, and Windows Media and Real Video can do even better than that (although, last I heard, Zaurus doesn't support Windows Media and Real Video yet, so MPEG-4, DIVX, On2 (did I get that right?), etc is all we can do for the time being.... but that's 80% good enough for now. :-) )

POSE on dosbox/qemu?

anyone gotten the Palm Emulator to run on Zaurus?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=63401\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Isn't that a little like having a Lamborghini emulate a VW bug? :-P :-D :-)

"Yeah... just listen to that Palm Emulator Roar when I rev' up the engine!"  LOL. :-)

But in reality I do understand the need for it (A palm emulator).  There are some applications that are written for the Palm that aren't yet written for the Zaurus (sadly enough), such as some e-book readers (oh I know that we have some readers that claim to read all... but I have some e-books that only work on palm.  I hope someday that will change).

Software / Kde-pim/pi 1.9.14 Release

OpieMail/Pi - really fast, but it shows some emails as just blank. It seems to be the fancy HTML emails.

I thought Opie-Mail supports all common e-mail content format types.  Can you tell us more about these "fancy HTML" formats?  Is it the typical HTML format used by most e-mail programs or is there something different about them?  I'd imagine that Opie doesn't have the HTML scripting support that full blown e-mails have and therefor may not "render at runtime" as well on script-rich HTML e-mails like other e-mail programs.

Does that sound correct?

I also have my own questions below:
  • Where is the "data" aspect of om/pi (e-mail) and the opie addressbook stored?  (Which directory and files?... I need to know this so that I can backup/restore the data as needed)
  • Will the Opie apps get "confused" if I switch the installation locations?  For example: first I installed it in my internal memory, but now I want to install it on my SD card.
  • Will it work to have some of the Opie apps in Internal memory and some on an SD card?  Will they still be able to find each other as needed?
  • If I install Opie Mail and Opie Addressbook on my SD card, will the other apps (installed internally) still work during those times when the SD is removed?
I want Opie Mail on my (MS-DOS formatted) SD card so that I can store more e-mail (not enough room in internal memory).  I also want the e-mail program and the addressbook on the SD card so that I can put the SD card in my laptop and backup the Opie data every now and then.

I'm planning on having my Opie mail become my only e-mail program.

Does anyone see any problems/issues with this approach?

Thanks in advance.

Software / All Audio Codecs That Play On Zaurus?
« on: December 17, 2004, 08:29:53 am »
Ah... got it.  Sorry for not catching that.

The spx files I was testing I created using SpeexEnc Version 1.0.4.

What are the pro's and con's of the MP4, 3GP, and AMR codecs?  Which one is the best for what?

Thanks again!

General Discussion / Zaurus Linux Shell Scripting Questions
« on: December 16, 2004, 09:21:31 pm »
I'm a UNIX/Linux shell scripting newbie.  I've seen a few Zaurus User Group How-To pages on some script examples and I think I unterstood 85% of what I saw...
  • How many different kinds of shell script (.sh... are there other extensions too?) languages are supported under Linux in the Zaurus?
  • What are the differences between them?
  • Why use one over the other?
  • Where can I find "Shell Scripting For Dummies" kind of resource/page/site?
Thanks!

Software / All Audio Codecs That Play On Zaurus?
« on: December 16, 2004, 10:26:35 am »
One thing I noticed on the Version 1.0.3 binary posted above is that it cuts off the last 1-3 seconds of each audio file.  I compared this with the x86 Version 1.0.4 executable I downloaded from the speex website and it correctly palyed the last 1-3 seconds.  I suspect it could be a audio buffer type of bug in version 1.0.3.

How stable is 1.0.16?
