Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Incomplete Flash?
« on: June 04, 2005, 10:51:56 am »
no, haven't checked out everything there yet, I'm wondering if maybe I have 'wrong' partition sizes. At least I'm not in a panic though, since I'm paranoid enough to make a full NAND flash backup before I try to zap a new system on it, so I'm back up and running, but not with OE-GPE yet.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Incomplete Flash?

System is a CL-860.

Flashing seemed to go ok, no complaints iirc.

Now when I go for a first-boot, I get the logo in the corner, then it flashes to the second screen.

Starting GPE display manager: gpe-dm

and that's where it leaves off.

The email light is blinking once every 3~4 seconds too.

The power button on the back properly suspends it seems, and I have a blinking box on the line following the "gpe-dm" line.

Just tried another flash, same results. Email light is not flashing yet though.

Any ideas?

Have you modified your /etc/sword.conf to point to the entire data tree?

The sword platform needs mods.d and the modules, if you get it installed right you can just copy the folder tree over, then update your sword.conf to point to the exact location.

Bah, use mc. solves all your troubles, and is the same on every platform out there.

With the Z's, all that matters is your file quality and your headphones fidelity. I have a Audigy2 platnium and an Nforce2 Soundstorm in my desktop, and with the same headphones the Z is really good.

Cxx0 General discussions / My SD card adventures with an 860
« on: June 21, 2004, 01:31:51 am »
1) The SD card interface on the C7/8x0 series does not support SDIO

2) The SD card interface does not support higher transfer speeds that some cards support.

3) There is an issue with at least the 860\'s where the Z will try to push/suck data faster than the interface supports (via USB drive or networking) and results in corrupted partition tables and filesystems. Symptoms include long Z lockups (waiting for timeouts) and similar effects on Windows as well.

4) Creating a new partition table on a Z requires downloading an fdisk ipk.

5) You can only fdisk while root, so to make things simple install a terminal app first.

6) The mkfs app on the Sharp rom appears to be semi-broken, you have to invoke mkfs.msdos or mkfs.ext2 or mkfs.ext3 to format a partition correctly.

7) For the love of humanity (and a poor penguin named Tux) please umount /dev/mmcdaX before you start blasting. Tapping the card icon in the corner has the same effect.

8) linux (at least on the Z) is not really hot-plug friendly. Make sure you unmount a card, even if the system is suspended, before you remove it. Except when the card is toast of course.

9) If fdisk on the z craps out, and is unable to access the device, try sticking it into windows, and disk managering it. You can always re-fdisk it again on the Z.

10) If you have another linux machine handy, it really helps to be able to call up the man pages, which are not on the Z.

11)  When I go to a hot spot, I download from my cf wifi card to the sd card. Then when I pause, I switch to a cf storage card, and copy the downloads from the sd card to the cf card. That seems to avoid the \'burst pipes\' everytime I try it.

Enjoy, maybe more later.

Howdy, I\'m up here in the PACNW as well. I got mine from japan-direct, and it got here in about a week (routes through SFO). I haven\'t had any problems at all that haven\'t been a) recoverable and  my own fault. I\'ve seen posts that say that while the service turn-around time may be a bit longer with JD, they are just as reliable. I had a question on the order contents, and I got an answer next business day.

General Discussion / stalled file uploads

Hmm, I\'m having this too, with an additional aggravating factor...

When the transfer crashes, it evidently leaves bad bits on the SD card. I have the card formatted as FAT so I can swap it back and forth between my XP machine and my Z. XP chokes on the bad bits, sometimes to the point of me having to force a hard reset, and the Z freezes up for several minutes until it times out trying to access the SD card, or initializing on insertion. Comments anybody?

Now of course I haven\'t been able to get back into the service menus, until I found

Another option that is slightly easier than installing the battery while holding down the <D>+<M> keys is to plug the ac adapter in - serves the same purpose then you can insert the battery and lock the case.

Thanks.

The NAND backup should be a complete image of the current state of your machine. I have NAND backups in various modes as I use the images to test  installs of suspect software before I install on my working image. I also switch between ROMS by running the appropriate NAND Restore.

This comment should be pinned. It fills in all the pieces and now things make sense. Thanks.

As mine is no longer doing this, I am suspecting that it requires the original NAND.

Now I found this: Service menus howto

Chugging through NAND restore now...

NAND restore appears to be happy. Clicking reset from the Extra menu does not reboot your Z, do not panic peoples.

Very strange... D+M+on (from suspend) worked everytime prior to my first ROM flash, now it doesn\'t want to repro.

No, just a suspend. Tapped the [on/off] button so it suspended, held down D+M, tapped [on], and I got into the maintanence menu. The only trouble was that everyone tells you how to get into the service menu, but nobody says how to get out of it, or what else it does.

I went to the main page that had the \"Extra\" menu item, that brought up a submenu. In there was an option to \"RESET\". It rebooted, and my data is still here. I don\'t know if that is the recommended way or not, but it worked.

D+M + the [on] button from a powered off state.

To reboot into normal mode I selected [reset] from the [extra] menu.

This gave me a 128mb image on my CF card.

Before I flash my rom, what else should I back up to be able to restore to the factory rom? I understand Japanese, and would like to have the option to switch back.

NAND Backup requires CF card...
No apparent need to remove battery to access service menu, just D+M+[on]...

in progress
