I feel very much let down.

I was very happy when I first got my Zaurus, expecting a large user community with active developement, but it seems the SL-5500 got obsolete in no time at all...

I got the Cacko rom installed and I used it happily for some time, but somehow it got broken... I can´t get ScummVM to work anymore, mplayer neither... Don´t know which version of the actual Cacko rom is meant for my Zaurus nor where to download it...

Could anybody tell me what would be the best OS for my poor little old Collie? I´d like to use some games (scummvm, mame, c64) and some multimedia apps (video & mp3) and a good PDF reader (and possibly read other eBook formats), check my mail (IMAP without the need to download all the mails) and do some web browsing. I already gave up the hope to have a nifty painting program that really makes good use of the touch sensitive screen...

I got a 2Gb SD (Kingston) and a 2Gb CF (Kingston) card, but due to the 1Gb limit, I´m using a 1 Gb SD (Sandisk)... The 2Gb CF card works fine. My wireless network adapter is a Linksys WCF12, which used to work fine with the Cacko Rom.

Please help!

Linux Issues / Problems With Ipkg
« on: January 30, 2005, 04:05:47 pm »
Hi there,

On some packages I'm trying to install I get this error:

"The filename of this package includes character this application can't handle. Please change filename and try reintall"...

For example, this occurs with the mplayer ipk at: http://www.zeb.uklinux.net/files/mplayer_0.90pre10_arm.ipk

Any idea? Workaround?

Windows Issues / Cradle / Usb Cable Under Windows Nt4?
« on: January 30, 2005, 03:27:59 pm »
I found a thread on this forum with a long list of instructions on how to get the sync to work on NT4, but it didn't work for me...

Well, I guess I'll have to use my other boxes for now, 'cause I don't wanna spend too much time on this now.

Anyway, thanks for the advice.

JM.

Windows Issues / Cradle / Usb Cable Under Windows Nt4?
« on: January 27, 2005, 09:32:06 pm »
Pls. don't flame me for asking this

Why NT4 in the first place? Well, 'cause my poor old laptop can't handle WinXP (233Mhz, 96Mb RAM and 4Gb HDD). NT4 is a lot better (stabler & cleaner) than win98 and I can't install Linux because I need a M$ OS for the Garmin Mapsources of my gf's GPS. So the lappie is stuck with NT4 Workstation (+SP6a).

I got another box with Linux running, but I'd like to be able to use the Z on the laptop. I know NT4 has problems with USB, so I'll forget about that (or is it possible?).

But how about the serial port?
I got a SerialoZThinCable USB. With 2 converters on my laptops serial port (SERIAL to PS2 and PS2 to USB) I can plug the usb cable from my Z into the serial port of my laptop. In theory, this should work...

But now how do I get QTopia Desktop to see my Z???? With USB I had to install the USB drivers! Don't I need any drivers with a serial connection? In QTopia Desktop, I've set "PDA connection method" serial, but no go... items in synch menu stay grayed out...

Am I doing something wrong? Anybody has experience with Z on NT4?

Linux Issues / Problems With Zgcc
« on: January 25, 2005, 09:32:28 am »
Freizugheit: yes I was running the installation as root.

Stu: Indeed both methods do the job, thanks!

I still haven't gotten the compiler to run, 'cause now I got a misconfiguration in the compiler config, but the source command works again!

Linux Issues / Problems With Zgcc
« on: January 24, 2005, 11:32:59 am »
Can anybody help me out?

I'm trying to install the "ZGCC GNU Compiler Suite Release 2.02" on my Zaurus.

Configuration instructions are here: http://s91215199.onlinehome.us/zaurus/zgcc2install.html

But I get stuck on the part where I have to configure the compiler

I have to run "source zgcc.sh" as root, but root doesn't recognize the command "source"...

Any suggestions?

Linux Issues / Can't Mount Samba Shares On My Z
« on: January 23, 2005, 06:36:22 pm »
Alright, I found out the answer myself!

I put the mountpoint in /home/zaurus/winshare/ and then the Z scans automatically for media files

NB: Watch out with the number of files and directories per share, because the Z can take quite some time to scan all directories!!!

It works, but... Where the hell do I mount a windows share in order to be "picked up" by the document browser and other applications????

For example the mediaplayer (and many other apps for that matter) don't allow me to open a user specified directory!!!!

I tried "mpegplayer /path/to/my/mp3file.mp3" and that works, but on a per file basis...

I would have created my mount points on /mnt/card/winshares/ but my SD card is "disabled" since I'm running the crow / Cacko rom now, so...

... so I need to know (the exact path, pls.) where media files are normally stored on the Zaurus (SD is seen as RAM).

Try doing this as root instead of installing libncurses5

Code: [Select]
ln -s /lib/libncurses.so.4.2 /usr/lib/libncurses.so.5
Hope it works

Thanks, it works now!!!!
now I have the crow rom installed but what went wrong last time on my Sharp 3.1 rom I think was that I forgot to uninstall libncurses5 so the together with the symbolic link  I got this segfault.

So indeed the solution is to NOT install libncurses and to make a symbolic link.

And I do have write access, yeeeha! So finally it's working!!!!

One happy Zaurus user

(but now my kismet won't work anymore, but that's for another thread)

Linux Issues / Can't Mount Samba Shares On My Z

I followed your advise.
Well, there's good news and bad news... The good news is that I don't get any errors anymore... When I issue a smbmount command as root, it returns the prompt without complaining. However... the bad news is that all applications that want to browse the mountpoint immediatly hang... eg "ls /mnt/card/mnt/winshare/" won't return the prompt, and when browsing to that directory using texteditor, texteditor hangs!

I thought this might be because /mnt/card/mnt/winshare/ is a fat partition???? I think the SD Card is fat16 but I'm not sure... But when I mounted it on  /home/ the result was the same... btw if I mount as root and try to browse the mountpoint then I get a "Segmentation fault" ... any ideas?

Finally I got my very own SL-5500, which makes me extremely happy... Got some nice stuff working (prBoom, ScummVM, qpdf2, embedded console...) but I can't mount Samba shares   although I've been fighting with it for a whole day now...

I downloaded and installed smbmount, but the page where I downloaded said I had to install Libncurses5 by remounting the root as rw (mount -o remount,rw /) but alas, no success...

The libncurses5_5.0-6.0potato1_arm.ipk doesn't install correctly (extraction error) and the libncurses_5.0_arm.ipk does only work for user "zaurus", which is of no use, because shares need to be mounted as user "root": as soon as I do a smbmount as superuser, then it starts to complain about missing libraries...

I guess the root filesystem needs indeed to be mounted as "rw" in order to get those libs in the correct location, but it's a cramfs filesystem!!!! These can only be "ro", right???

I got Sharp Rom 3.1 running on my Z... would the Crow ROM solve these problems? I'm thinking about switching over to the crow rom anyway, because due to some severe hangups (double reboot bug, I suppose), I lost all my configs, and since I'm experimenting a lot, this means a lot of reinstalls

(I'll switch to the Crow rom or openZ in order to preserve my configs, even after a full reset...)

So can anyone help me out with this samba thing???? Apparently a lot of people got it working, so what am I doing wrong? pls. help

JM.

Accessories / SL-5500 compatible CF & SD cards???
« on: November 16, 2004, 11:36:13 am »
Zauruman,

The brand sandisk is available in about every shop around me at reasonable prices, so perhaps easiest to stick with sandisk then? But what about the rumour they delivered malfunctioning cards? (Apparently they corrected that?).

For me, the SD card is meant to function as "permanent" storage (so the SD card will be used to install programs and that card will stay in the Z at all times). Therefore I think this should be at least 512Mb, 1Gb prefered...

The CF card, on the other hand, will be used as removable storage, like a diskette. The CF slot will have the Wifi card when needed, otherwise a CF memory Card with games (mame, ScummVM), mp3, movies or data. Here it could be handy to have several 128Mb cards, but for Lucas Arts adventures that are "talkies" (or the Monkey Island CD version) it would be handier to have a 1Gb card so it will be able to contain the whole Lucas Arts collection  unless I restrict myself to the non talkie versions

Offtopic:

In the end the Z is an expensive toy

I got mine (SL-5500) for only 290 euros (including leather case, extra screen protectors and a 128Mb CF card) but what's a Z without connecting it wirelessly to your LAN? (and showing off it's power by wirelessly receiving a live stream from a TV card on your LAN).
What's the Z without at least an extra CF and SD card? I got a laptop with a dead battery and I don't want my Z ending up the same way, depending on a wall outlet converting it into a not-so-portable device, so I bought a Socket Mobile Power Pack as an external battery. With all accessories, including Card Reader, it's an expensive toy  but boy, what a nice toy

I'm a bit disappointed with the CPU power of the SL-5500 (I wonder how long it will take before the SL-5500 can't keep up with software demands anymore), but then again, it's my first PDA, so I can't complain. I hope a lot of newer models will appear quickly one after the other (already happened: SL-5600, SL-6000, C series, SL-C3000) and prices will drop quickly.
And then I'll hope all accessories & memory will still be compatible in the future, but we'll see about that.

Long live King Z.
