Nokia Tablet / Nokia N810

This is definately a very bad turn of events for my wallet

Thanks!
One negative (well, perhaps not): No Java.  Well, in truth, there is a GUI-less Java available, but it's fairly useless.

The Zaurus had some decent Java-based apps |Project Manager was great) that I would have loved to be able to use on the Nokia.

Dang. I was hoping for an excuse not to get one.

Can anybody else confirm or deny this?
It's true.  Runs X11 with modified Gnome.  Porting GTK apps is fairly straightfoward, however you still should "Hildonize" the app which isn't so straightfoward.

Hello

Quite nice gadget ... You can have it for cca 800 USD without OS. It runs DOS, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Linux ...
Not definnitelly a Z replacement but worth to look at it

With all due respect, if it's not utilizing sound, wifi or the touchscreen, it really isn't useful to say it "runs Linux" (or DOS, for that matter).  It may boot up Linux, but is pretty useless without the hardware.

I assume a keyboard and a usb modem aren't otg devices? I often use a usb keyboard and I'm not conviced that a bluetooth keyboard is a viable alternative.
...
Does somebody know how good the pdf-reader is? Is it made by Adobe?
I've not seen an OTG keyboards, just disks so far, but I believe the spec allows for them.  That said, I've been using a bluetooth keyboard with my N800 for quite some time and, at least for me, it's very usable.

I don't believe the PDF reader is by Adobe, but it's usable.  There is also a port of Evince available, which I think is a bit more flexible than the included PDF reader.

The usb still isn't a host, is it? Or if it is it's unpowered again? I'd give at least 5 points for this.
It's USB OTG, according to what I've read.  Not as good as host-mode, but if you've got an OTG device, it'll handle it.

I would change a couple of things:

+ Total storage works out to be what the current kernel on the N800 supports, so I don  really se that as a problem.
+ You do have Debian.  You've had Debian since the N770.
+ No Cf cards is fine with me. SD is enough of a standard that cards are plentiful.  What cheeses me is the Micro SD cards.  Many, many current tablet owners have standard sized SD cards that are now no longer of use in the new tablet.
+ Obviously oriented to English-speaking users.

I won't give a plus or minus to either the clamshell or keyboard.  They're both highly subjective.  I will comment, however, that the clamshell design seems to be out, and the slate form factor seems to be in these days (as witnessed by the myriad of UMPCs and upcoming MID designs).  It would be nice if they included a cover-protector like they did on the N770 though.  I've mentioned before that when I bought the N800 I thought I'd miss the Zaurus' thumb board, and didn't (and still don't), so that's why I say that it's also subjective.

compared to z, seems like this:

+1 memory
-1 even less total storage
+1 screen
-1 no debian yet
+1 wifi
-1 cf
+1 maybe will have more anglophone users?
-1 clamshell
-5 keyboard might not be as ergonomically thumbable
? support for hw in e.g. debian?
? weight
? speed
? sound
? reliability

score = -5 + ?

It's also interesting that they put the dpad on the left. I wonder ifI could get used to that.
The D-pad has always been on the left side of their tablets (770/800), but on upper left hand side.  I like having the D-pad in the upper left position.  I don't like the new location, because that means you need the keyboard open to use it.

When i bought my N800 I thought I would miss having the keyboard I had on my Zaurus, but I actually didn't.  The N800's interface is very finger-friendly, and used in combination with the D-pad was very useful.  Having the D-pad in this new location just seems like a design mistake in my opinion.

I can't officially say for sure, but over at tabletblog.com Daniel's dug up something that indicates the next version of the tablet will have a slideout keyboard: http://tabletblog.com/2007/09/third-intern...-confirmed.html

The N800 doesn't have bash (built-in), and I have already tried to "borrow" bash from the Z, won't even run enough to give a core dump.

There's a port of bash for the N800 on maemo.org.

I am wondering whether we zaurians could tap into the software library of the N800 if we could install a few compatibility libraries - I've given up on extracting a working Skype from the Sony Mylo, but there's one on the Nokia, also there's a google talk app with voice which would be nice.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=167904\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
Both apps work quite nicely on the N800.

I would think that zaurus users would run into the same problem that N800 users run into when wishing to use a qtopia app... the inverse - being gnome, which is what's actually behind hildon.  And even then, I think that skype is tightly tied to the hardware on the N800.  Not sure about google talk (or Gizmo Project, which also exists for the N800), but I suspect both of those apps are also tightly tied to the hardware.

Next year's application development should prove to be interesting, with the several MIDs that are coming out.  From what I've seen, there won't be much in the way of qtopia, rather most will be some variant of gnome.

Nokia Tablet / Successor Of The N800

Hey, rickh, how do you feel about the full screen touch-screen keyboard on your N800?  I'm considering the N800 now that it has skype, but wondered about text input.  I'm a touch typist and the idea intrigues me.  I love the clamshell keyboard on my 860, compared to my sl5500.

For an on-screen thumb board, it's not bad and works well for small amounts of text input, but I wouldn't use any kind of on-screen input for anything serious, whether it were a Zaurus, an N800 or any of the UMPCs coming out.  For serious input I bought a bluetooth keyboard that works nicely. It folds up to the same size eas the N800 and is pocketable.

Do you have a Nokia store near you?  If so, I'd encourage you to walk in and try one out.  I had looked at both the 770 and the 800 for months online and it wasn't until I actually had one in my hands and played with it that I was convinced enough to buy one.  I'm not at all dissapointed, BTW.  It's a good little unit and well worth the price in my opinion.

As an N800 user, I say "yuck".  The camera on the N800, while currently pretty useless, is much better as an adjustable camera, rather than fixed as in the picture. Secondly, why on earth would they put the D-pad on the slider keyboard itself?  Much better to put it on the the outer shell as both the N770 and the N800 currently have it.   I actually don't mind the slider keyboard as a concept.

A couple of questions about the touchscreen version :

- does the tactile digitizer noticeably degrade the display compared to the original non-touchscreen SA1 ?

- when the new version first appeared, there was a rumour on a forum over here that maybe the touchscreen was something special that required the stylus provided by KJS to work with. This came from a board member who only had the unit in hand for a few moments, and was unable to use the screen with his fingers or the stylus of his own PDA. Can anyone confirm or deny this ?

TIA,
fp

AFA the ones I tested at the bookfair are concerned, I had no non-touchscreen SA1s to compare with, but the ones I tested were pretty bright and crisp.

I can use my fingers and finger nails on the screen. Actually, I probably used my nails as I've always been on my PDAs and Zaurus.

Why? Oh Why must the keyboard be so stiff ...
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=162143\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Am I the only one that doesn't have a problem with this keyboard? There must be something wrong with me....

Obviously you're not the only one, since the last comment was a complaint on the keyboard.

Complaining for the sake of complaining accomplishes nothing.

General Discussion / Forget The Zaurus - ItÅ› Fujitsu Time!

It looks like the men with the fingers in all UMPC pies, the Dynamism gang, have secured a deal for the Fujitsu UMPC. I've just seen the info come through on their RSS feed. They will be offering two versions of the Fujitsu UMPC from Japan. One with XP Pro (English) and one with Vista Business (English.)

It will be available in June with either 20 or 40GB HDD (depending on which part of their site you read!) but there is no pricing yet. I assume this will be a Japanese import and will be offered with pricing that reflects the import and software re-install costs.

Sorry me again

I'm going to Spain on tueday and want to take my Zaurus, but only just realised I only have the UK adapter for it. So I was wondering is it going to be OK to use the original plug, going into a UK adapter that I have, and then going into a two pronged spain adapter as well? That would mean there was two separate adapters on the end of the plug is that possible or will it damage my Zaurus?

If its not possible then what adapter will I need to get? What is the default Zaurus plug/voltage/country?

Thanks for your patience with me guys, is massively appreciated hopefully soon I will be able to help someone myself hehe
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
I would be careful using just adapters.  If you want to really be safe, get a dual wattage converter kit with the different plugs.  I bought [a href=\"http://www.brookstone.com/store/product.asp?product_code=223891&search_type=search&search_words=converter%20kit&prodtemp=t1&cm_re=Result*R1C1*A]this[/url]  kit prior to traveling and it has worked well wherever I go.  The Zaurus is really sensitive to voltage differences.  I fried my first Zaurus that way :-)

*EDIT*

Oh wait.  I think I misunderstood your home location.  If you're already on 240v with your adapter, you won't need a converter.  Moi's suggestion is much cheaper.
