Zaurus - pdaXrom / Emulation & pdaxrom

At the mean time, I have uploaded the NES emulator, InfoNES,

<snip>

Again, i have never used this emulator before and seldom play NES games, so if you know any performance tricks for InfoNES or any other better emulator out there, please let me know.
Man, you're wild! I can't thank you enough for compiling and sharing all of these with us. Very cool.

Now, I've never tried InfoNES, but I do know that znester is pretty nifty. I had that on Cacko before putting RC5 on the Z. I had no problems with it there in terms of performance, keys, or sound. Solid emulator. Granted, I only tried a couple of roms, but they seemed fine.

Thumbs up for snes9x. FF6 is pretty playable on it now (playing from a console, somewhere around 15-20 fps). I wouldn't be surprised if this gets a little better with later versions of pdaxrom as well.

Looks like we're still missing an nes emulator. Granted, I haven't tried any of the couple around, but since other emus had to be compiled for RC5....

Drac, I see you're busy on porting all sorts of things. Much obliged for that! Can't wait to try out Gens. It's high time for some Buck Rogers and Shining in the Darkness.  (How's that for a combination?)

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Broken package manager?
« on: October 17, 2004, 06:52:10 pm »
Looks like it was indeed out of space. I had the suggested size of 50 mb for the root, and it was completely filled. Can't even write the list for packages. D'oh!

I did a quick repartition to 55 mb and that fixed it. I'm about to make it 115 or 120 mb since I can't seem to convince the package manager to install to my home destination (either the manager of manually with ipkg).

Well, off to bang my head against the wall and see what other trouble I can get myself into.

BTW, in case I came across as too negative earlier, I really do like RC5. I'm just running into a few problems is all, but that's mostly user error.

I finally succumbed and installed RC5, and while I like the look and speed, I'm about ready to throw the Zaurus across the room. Or get rid of pdaxrom again.

I've never had so much trouble with the package manger. I do an update, and it says it downloads and saves the list (according to the log), but the file isn't there. The available packages are blank. No amount of restarting X or rebooting or praying to the Zaurus gods changes this.

I change the feed, and it continues to download from a previous feed, claims to update the list, and doesn't.

My internet connection is fine. I can browse the web, etc.

If I try to do a manual install (ipkg install -d root packagename.here) it insists on trying to download it, not use it off of the source (an SD card in this case) and fails miserably.

When it was moderately working earlier, it failed to install every package I tried. It insisted on installing them in //usr/tmp/ipkg/packagename and yes, that's two //. Even if I had / as the destination, it attempted that non-existant, impossible // thing.

I've attempted to edit the ipkg.conf file, but vi refuses to allow me to save (ZZ does nothing, as does :wq).

Before I dropkick this thing, anyone have any suggestions?

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Request: Sega Genesis / Megadrive Emu for RC5
« on: October 15, 2004, 12:56:04 am »
Hey iamasmith, feeling ambitious?

On a slightly more serious note, it's too bad xmess is kinda slow. 3.5 fps is unplayable.

Would be nice to see if either of these alternatives run things faster, and still manage to do so with sound. Nice work on finding them Vanguard. Now we just need some compiles and packages.

I get full framerates in full 320-240

great job, indeed

I'll try to launch it outside X, to eliminate the cursor issue
Full framerates? As in 30ish fps? With what games?

I second this. I really like the idea of pdaxrom, but I've been using cacko as I had problems with rc4 (that have been solved, according to most reports). While I have an nes and an snes emulator running on cacko, I'll be damned if I can get a genesis emu working.

I'd like to switch back to pdaxrom to try it again, but I'm playing the waiting game right now. I want to see some stuff compiled for it and see if there's some performance improvements (and right now, that's all beyond my capabilities, so I'm patiently waiting while others do it). Working emulators would decrease my waiting time significantly.

Hard drive 4 Go
Intel PX270 416MHz
Flash16MB/SDRAM64MB
416 mhz cpu? It better be a hell of a lot faster than the PXA255. I'm guessing it has some tweaked performance and better power consumption, but it seems underwhelming, numberically. A little hard drive would be nifty, but more ram would be nice, too.

Here's to hoping we get some confirmation on this soon. Should be another show coming up right soon in Japan, right?

I also noticed no integrated wifi or bluetooth. That's sure to make some people unhappy if true.

And here's to hoping they slap a beefier cpu in it. I want a lean, mean, linux machine in my pocket that'll run Doom, Quake, and emulators at full bore. I'm not asking for much.

I like the look of those. I just got a pdair case for my 860, but eh...I dunno about it. It's a nice leather case, but I think I might like something a little tougher.

I'm not sure if I want something with a belt clip on it though. May have to order one of those anyway.

More info on what you were doing/what it did?

If you haven't removed the battery yet, do so. If it still won't turn on after popping it back in, you may consider charging it for a little while. I noticed last night that when the battery gets totally drained, it needs a while to charge before the unit will even turn on, regardless of it being plugged in.

Sorry, can only offer the obvious right now.

Cxx0 General discussions / step 2: 860 to english, or just flash?
« on: October 11, 2004, 09:30:47 pm »
Since links have been posted, here's my take.

I didn't bother converting. Wasn't worth the time for me. That's me. I went to pdaXrom, then OZ, then Cacko, and that's there I'm at now.

If you have the time and inclination, it'd be a good experience to convert it (once you manage to install the terminal (when I couldn't find one by default, I said the heck with it and flashed)), but I don't know that it's experience you couldn't find elsewhere, if that's something you're interested in.

If you're planning on flashing anyway, I'd say give every rom a try and see what you like. Kismet will run on all of them, so that's isn't exactly a defining factor between them. I love the clean look of Cacko, but I really like the options of having an X server. Decisions, decisions.

UPDATE>>>
Very strange.  When I copied the zeditor.ipk file to SD it installed okay.  So near, yet so far because I'm now told that I can't save the edited status file.  Is it just me or is this really not very easy???
Did you set zeditor to run as root? Gotta tap and hold the stylus down on the icon, and when the screen comes up, you'll have the option to do it. If you're not running it as root, it won't save most things because the default user (zaurus) doesn't have permissions to modify most things.

Software / SNES Emulator Guide

So it is. It hovers around 20 fps, give or take a few.

Still, my point was more broad, in that I'd love to see 30+ fps. Unless I have some badly botched installation, I'm guessing that 20 fps is about the best I can expect (except during cut scenes and low action scenes).

But now I'm getting somewhat off-topic.

Software / dgen on Cacko
« on: October 01, 2004, 12:45:26 pm »
So I've been scouring the forum and googling, but I can't seem to get dgen to work.

Here follows what I've done since installing the dgen package and attempting to run it. I'm using Cacko 1.21b on an 860, if that matters at all.

dgen installed properly and then complained that it needed the following: libstdc++-libc6.1-2.so.3. So I downloaded 3 different packages of varrying versions: libstdc++2.10-glibc2.2_2.95.4-0.010407-fam1_arm.ipk, libstdc++2.10-glibc2.2_2.95.4-0.010407_arm.ipk, and libstdc++2.10-glibc2.2_2.95.4-15_arm.ipk. I realize the first two arm the same except for the -fam1, but the file sizes are different.

Now, I was unable to get the last package to install (I noticed it doesn't specifically say it's for arm, but keep reading), but I installed the first, and still dgen complains: dgen: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++-libc6.1-2.so.3: cannot load shared object file: No such file or directory

I then tried the second package and nothing appeared to have changed as dgen still complained. I decided a little more investigation was in order.

The next step was to attempt to see where the files went. A find / -name "libstdc++*" revealed that libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3 could be found in /home/root/usr/lib/ (note the 2, not 1 in the filename). So I attempted to create a symbolic link thusly: ln -s /home/root/usr/lib/libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3 libstdc++-libc6.1-2.so.3

No error, no nothing, so I presumed the link was created (I'm still wrapping my head around the whole linking thing). So I tried to run dgen again and it gave the same error as I've already posted.

Help?

I've about exhausted my linux knowledge, at least what I can remember, and I can't seem to find anything other than people suggesting to create links when running into this problem (and not necessarily talking about it being on a Zaurus).

I'd appreciate a kick in the pants or helpful point to something that would get this working. I've managed to get zgnuboy and snes9x to work, but this one is eluding me.

That is absolutely wild. That's a great read.

I'm at a lot for how much he is able to do with his Zaurus. I'm still struggling to get a genesis emulator to work, and he does all of THAT with his? Man, talk about making me jealous!

I suddenly feel the inner geek stirring within me.
