6000 - Tosa / Help! Blew Something In Charging Circuit Sl-6000
« on: February 11, 2009, 03:17:48 pm »
It would be worthwhile to test a different battery.  Li-ion batteries have an internal safety circuit, so you may have blown it.  I would try that before even considering replacing a surface-mount fuse.

Sharp ROMs / Crypting And Decrypting

Unfortunately i use the files very often, so i always would have to use the qkonsole, which could be quite complicated and critical for mistyping.
Note that you don't necessarily need the console; you can use a wrapper script that uses opie-sh to prompt you for the password from Qt and then decrypts the file, starts your app, and prompts you to re-encrypt the file once the app closes.
You would still need to enter the passwords every time you access your file, but there's no way around that if you want to be safe.

I can tell you from experience that a little extra typing is worth knowing that your sensitive data is safe.  I had my SL-6000 with *lots* of personal info stolen a year ago  and still worry if it will cause me problems.

Sharp ROMs / Crypting And Decrypting

Is there any application in cacko to password-encrypt and decrypt files?
Or - alternative -, to block others from starting special Programs?
The only applications i found are for text-encryption.

I would like to see a solution, which protects special documents without the need to protect the whole machine.

Anyone knows more?

Give ccrypt a try.  There's an ARM binary on the site, but it's an older version.  I compiled the latest version myself and it works well on the SL-6000 with Sharp ROM v1.12 (binary is attached below, just move it to a directory on your path as ccrypt (no .txt)).  Ccrypt works by encrypting files and directories, so it's not designed to transparently encrypted a disk volume.  A big plus for ccrypt is that it is available for lots of OSs/HW -- you can sync your files securely with whatever OS you like and decrypt them on the remote system.

Hi
I've tried to get an irivers mini-A USB cable for my 'new' 6000- but no luck here in the UK - can anybody source/sell me one please? Thanks

Try this: [a href=\"http://www.trisoft.de/en_tzubehr.htm]trisoft[/url]
This is not a iriver cable, but you can order it and you will get it.

I found a much cheaper and current alternative.  It's very similar to the iRiver.
Check it out here: Vernier

General Discussion / Zaurus And I On Vacation
« on: May 25, 2007, 10:59:25 pm »
Let me tell you about my recent vacation in Europe.  I had my sl-6000 with just about all the gear mentioned on this thread -- cf ethernet was especially handy.  The bad part is that ALL of it was stolen in Prague!!!

So, lesson learned is that it is more important to NOT take anything that you really don't want to loose -- like personal info.  I had a 6gb microdrive with all kinds of info that should not have been on it, like copies of my tax returns, etc.

Hope you have better luck!

For Sale / Wanted / Stolen Sl-6000
« on: April 15, 2007, 07:29:40 am »
Thanks for the words of sympathy, y'all.
Hind sight makes us wiser, so here's what I have learned -- maybe it's useful for you.

- it is important to back up -- frequently and to multiple devices that are not kept together.  In my case, I used unison to sync the important stuff with my laptop, but the laptop was swiped along with the Z.  I also backed up to a 2GB flash drive that went with everything else.  I know it is stupid to keep everything together, but you may be like me and not always plan to be robbed at any time.

- don't store sensitive info on the Z.  I used Zsafe to store *all* my passwords, now I am wonder how safe it really is.  I also had bank account info, pdfs of my tax returns and passport, and many other documents.  It bothers me that a thief now has access to all that.   It's clear to me now that an encrypted file system is critical for portable devices.

As to how it happened, it happened inside a train from Prague from Vienna.  Stupid me decided the train would be a good way to go (mistake #1).  The Holesovice station in Prague is nasty, right out of a movie.  Then I accepted help with the luggage from a porter (big mistake #2).  I kept my laptop bag with me at all times until we got on the train.  I put it on the seat so that I could help the porter thief with the big luggages (huge mistake #3).  The porter worked with a colleague who swiped the bag.  I only noticed it was missing when the train was moving out.  The best part is that I paid the thief $10!

Software / Does Anyone Use Swapd For Swap File Management?
« on: May 29, 2006, 01:38:20 pm »

That's what I did.  I opened up every program on my zaurus until it started poping up that window asking me to close some programs.  In the swapd.conf fime it is supposed to create a swap file and mount it when there is less than 16mb of memory free.  I had like 6mb free and it didnt work.

What do you mean you had mixed results?  Does that mean it didn't work part of the time?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=128714\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

By mixed results, I mean it seems to work as intended, but, as in your experience, sometimes it seems like there's something wrong.  It just seems clumsy and overcomplicated for the task.

The microdrive/swap partition setup, on the other hand, just works.  No "out of memory" popup window.

I did use that package in the past with mixed results.  I don't recall the details of the config (/etc/swapd.conf, I think?), but the swap files are created as programs request more memory than available.  So, the situation you describe seems normal.

I originally installed it to be able to run ethereal, which needed 80MB free to start-up.  Swapd did allow me to run it, so it worked as advertised.  In your case, you could try to run opera and open lots of windows.

Now I have a 6GB microdrive, so I just created a permanent swap partition and uninstalled swapd.

Good luck!

General Discussion / Synchronizing Directories With Windows?
« on: May 06, 2006, 12:33:54 pm »

Two questions:

1. Do you use the remote server feature via ssh, or do you use it "locally" and zaurus being made acessible via Samba?
For simplicity of the setup I'd prefer the second option, but the first one is better in performance probably.
Is there anything to be done on the Zaurus (despite from installing unison) in order to make the remote server feature work? AFAIK in Cacko 1.23 the ssh service is available already. How about password entry on the Windows box, if I invoke the sync from Windows? Do I have to enter the user password? I'd prefer if I had not to.

2. The "Synchronize it!" solution suggested by clofland seems to work fine, but there is one thing I don't like. Does unison handle it in a better way?:
If I delete a file on one of the two replicas, the synchronizing process marks it as "new" for the place where I deleted it, so the first suggestion is to duplicate it.
I'd prefer it to be deleted on the other side by default (as there is usually a reason why I delete a file <g>). How does Unison handle this situation?

Thanks

I don't use samba, but have used both remote and local methods to synch.  It works equally well (root = /dir or root = ssh://user@host/dir).  When using the ssh method under Windows, unison opens a command window to allow you to enter the passphrase.  Running it without having to enter a passphrase or password is also possible, but it needs to be configured through ssh-add.  On the Z, you can use zkeychain (see my zaurus page below).

As for deleted files, I believe the default would be to delete it on the second root.

Maybe you could give a try to rsync or unison ?
But they are console tools...

Regarding unison, you're right about the Z version, but there is a gui for both Windows and Linux.
I have been using unison to synch w2k, Linux and the Z for quite awhile and recommend it highly! Give it a try before spending $$.

Try starting qpegps from the console.  After starting the map download, switch to the console and you should see some info regarding what is going wrong.
