Sharp ROMs / Occasionally Need To Reboot To Start Charging Process!
« on: June 29, 2008, 09:22:54 pm »
Not every time just occasionally, but when it does happen the only way I have of fixing it is to reboot. Don't know how old the battery is but it seems fine. Know any remedy apart from the reboot?

At regular points when I plug in my Z to charge up the light will go on momentarily and the Z will show no signs of charging. I have on occasion left it plugged in but no charge built up so its clear if the charge light dosen't come on it not charging. So the usual remedy is I do a reboot and this sorts it out, only thing is its a bit annoying and I'd like to understand whats going on and solve it without the reboot.

Thanks
Gus

Anyone know why this might be, even a clue!

Yes, you can get Perl packages for the Z. Look in the pdaX beta 1/3 feed for it. They should work on Cacko.

Sharp ROMs / Wpa_gui
« on: June 05, 2008, 07:30:09 pm »
Have got a Planex GW-CF11X wifi card and the wireless network I use is WPA-PSK. Now I have seen some posts where some people have managed to get their card working with WPA. I came across WPA_GUI and am not sure how I am supposed to use it. I did download the tgz file but it was just a bunch of source files and I have no idea how to use them and i couldn't find an ipk file.
Have gone to network in settings and in the config tab there is no SSID box only ESS-ID, is this the same? Haven't tried to get WEP working yet but the card seems to be recognised when i plug it in as it is correctly identified and lights up briefly.
Any help appreciated

Python / Python 2.5.1 And Pyqt For Cacko
« on: May 02, 2008, 08:25:58 am »
Thanks jfv,
Have downloaded and installed and it seems to be working okay. Will be using python to create a simple gui flash card program and learning python at the same time and hope to do all this on the Z.

I also downloaded the following files.... "Python_2.5.1-cackompile2.1_arm.ipk" and "pyqt_3.8.1-onboard-2_arm.ipk" from
http://feed.zaurusfr.org/cackophonie/feed/

Is this a more up to date version of python for the Z I should be using or is it a case of 6 and one half dozen of the other? Did try to install using these files but obviously got it wrong and installed using your kopsis links.

Thanks
Gus

I'll attach a copy I found on my Zaurus. It's Kopsis Python 2.4. You should be able to find instructions on the forum to mount the image. To program in python all you need is a text editor.

Stupid forum won't let me upload the file for some reason. Use instead this link.

I just found this using google: Kopsis instructions. You need to download the python-exe ipk as well as the image that I linked above. I guess the other file does the installation for you. I don't remember what I did when used it but I am sure I just followed the instructions and everything worked as it should.

Hi Jfv,
Unfortunately I am getting access forbidden when I try to use the first link, Kopsis Python 2.4 must surely be lurking around somewhere on the internet.

Sharp ROMs / Python, Can Anyone Help Here?
« on: April 28, 2008, 07:55:11 pm »
Have posted this in the Python forum but it seems very quiet over there so thought I would take a chance here and if nobody minded may be someone could give me pointers to how I can install this. Have looked up some of the links supplied in the other forum but they seem to have gone dead in most cases. There was some mention of a cramfs image but again links have gone dead

Any help or pointers would be appreciated

Thinking of learning Python and have downloaded "Python_2.5.1-cackompile2.1_arm.ipk" and "pyqt_3.8.1-onboard-2_arm.ipk" to the SD card on my Z. "Python_2.5.1-cackompile2.1_arm.ipk" won't install to my SD card and complains about dependencies. When i ran "ipkg depends" it moans about the underscore characters and i am fed up of seeing this error, why does ipkg do this when so many packages contain underscore characters?

I have now used "ipkg install" to install the package which seems to have worked but when i run python from the CLI it complains that libpython2.5.so.1.0 cannot load shared object file.....etc

Could someone please link me to a step by step installation guide for the Z which includes the req dependencies.

Should I install both files to memory or can I install them to the card?

What do i use for writing python on the Z, will a simple editor suffice?

There used to be a Python package created by Kopsis (if I remember right) which was a cramfs file so you just mounted it and were ready to go. It worked for me when I used it a few times a while back. Search the forum for "python kopsis".

Unfortunately alot of the links I have found so far have gone dry

Hello,

I've compiled the latest Python 2.5.1 for Cacko, as well as PyQT (bound to Cacko's QTopia).

IPKG are available here :

http://feed.zaurusfr.org/cackophonie/feed/

Enjoy !

Sharp ROMs / Installing Cacko Rom And Other Qs

I'd use C++. You can easily use it on the Z (at least with Debian/pdaXrom/Angstrom, I don't know about Cacko). Just download the ZGCC image, mount it, and off you go. The only other thing you need is a text editor (SciTE is nice, but a little slow, VIM is nice as well, but takes getting used to).

C++ is fairly straightforward IMO, so if you google around for tutorials, you can easily learn enough to code this app.

One of the reasons I had for moving to the Cacko rom was to be able to run a flash card program from the Kcompany, this didn't work out unfortunately due to the manual being in Japanese and there being little current support. But will be staying with the Cacko rom as its been a pleasure to use and does what i want for now at least until i know my way around Linux and am adventurous enough to try another ROM. Have gone and bought myself a cheap palm T3 which will allow me to use a good flash card study program I've used many times before. Currently making tentative steps to learning Java and am seriously tempted by Python which i am told is easier to get to grips with, and the fact that PyQt is the GUI of choice if you are using the Sharp ROM.

Thanks for everyones contribution and patience and further suggestions are always welcome

Sharp ROMs / Playing Avi
« on: April 27, 2008, 10:01:08 am »
Have had mixed results playing avi movies on my Z using Kino. Recently tried to play a movie i recorded on my stills camera and ended up with sync and speed problems. Would really appreciate some advice on what to use to encode for the Z1k, is 320x240 adequate? Is Kino about the best player there is available, what are optimum settings when encoding and playing? For encoding I use Lathe Omniquiti which has served me well on pocket PCs what should i be using for the Z?

Many thanks

Sharp ROMs / Pdf Viewer Not Working?
« on: April 22, 2008, 07:19:02 pm »

PDF readers have no word wrap, so making the font larger by zooming in is always going to produce a horizontal scrollbar.
A PDF document needs to have large fonts embedded into the original document to achieve nice readable fonts on a small screen without producing a horizontal scrollbar.
Basically the pdf readers for the Zaurus, and other handhelds are for reading small 1 to 10 page pdfs.
My work around for meanie's documentation is to do this.
I go to meanie's website on my desktop and save the page as htm "Web page, complete" in Firefox.
I did this with the various pages that are linked. Then I copy these to my Zaurus hard drive.
Viewing these in a browser is a much better experience than as a PDF.
I use both Opera and Netfront.
Netfront has an option to "Wrap content" I use either "JustFit" or SmartFit"
Opera has some settings to make fonts easier to read, and the resulting horizontal scrollbar only hides the margins.

Taken your advice and it works much better than the pdf prog, hopefully the pdf software will come in handy at some point

Many thanks
Gus

I use this one, maybe it will work better for you. Un-install the other one first.
Also, having a swapfile is very helpful when reading pdf files.
You already have libfreetype_6.3.4-1
I also included the version of libt1 that I have installed.
Remember, the forum changes dashes to underscores. These are the correct filenames:
qpdf2_render-freetype-2.3.0-070505a-1_arm.ipk
libt1_1.3.0-1_arm.ipk
Code: [Select]
Package: qpdf2
Version: render-freetype-2.3.0-070505a-1
Depends: libfreetype, libt1
Section: qpe/applications
Architecture: arm
Maintainer: Philip Kohn
MD5Sum: 78968771bae6e701b81bd1653d87a0dd
Size: 437537
Filename: ./qpdf2_render-freetype-2.3.0-070505a-1_arm.ipk
Description: Advanced PDF viewer and organizer for QPE.

Thanks for that, have now got it working. Am viewing Meanies pdf zbook3K and whilst its a bit slow drawing the pages it is certainly usable. The one thing that is a bit of a pain is when i choose to fit the pages to the width of the screen the font goes really small. When i zoom in I end up having to scroll like crazy. Do you know if there is a way around this?

Many thanks for your help
Gus
