Download and install FB VNC Server on Zaurus.

...

I hope the above will help.

I am finally on the stock Sharp ROM.  I downloaded the above mentioned FB VNC Server.  I cannot see a way to install it.

I put it on a CF card and copied it to the internal flash "Install_files" directory.  The "Add/Remove Software" tool does not see it.

I don't see access to a command line anywhere.

How does one install a .ipk file on a Sharp ROM?

Sharp ROMs / Oz To Sharp Rom Problem: Launcher.conf

Have you tried using the option to #3 to clear out /home?  Since you are going from OZ back to the Sharp Rom, I would suggest doing that.  It should hopefully take care of your problems.  I change roms on my 5600 all the time & haven't had any problems going back to the Sharp Rom.  Good luck.

Success, finally!  I used the option #3 "Format" as you suggested but it took many attempts to finally get it to work.  Here is what I did:

- Updated to the Sharp ROM from the CF card.
- As it was begining to reboot from the above update, I reset the unit and entered the maintenance screen again.
- Selected option #3 to format the flash.
- As it was beginning to reboot from the previous step format, I reset the unit and entered the maintenance screen again.
- Updated to the Sharp ROM from the CF card.
- Allowed the reboot to proceed normally.

This successfully booted the Sharp ROM image.  Thanks for the clue!

Sharp ROMs / Oz To Sharp Rom Problem: Launcher.conf

I have been using the OZ and Hentges ROMs for some time on my SL-5600.  However, I want to run the VNC server on the Zaurus to remote control it on my Linux laptop.  I have not been able to do this with anything I have tried with OZ.  Others have reported success using the Sharp ROM.

I updated to the Sharp ROM with the "560v132c.zip" file from http://www.myzaurus.com/ROMupdate6.asp.  The update from my CF card appeared to go just fine.

Upon booting the first time, the Zaurus screen fills with errors.  All of them refer to settings in "launcher.conf" and file not found.  It does this until a message about "to many errors" and shutting down "ln" (I think) for "5 minutes"  This time passes and then lots of similar errors blast by until the  minute shutdown happens again.  This is all I can get upon booting the Sharp ROM update.

From this state, I can update back to OZ or Hentges just fine.  This leaves me quite puzzled.  I can try different CF cards as sources though I am using the same CF card for OZ and Hentges updates.  I have not yet tried doing another download of the file from Sharp.  I also have not tried the Windows update process since I use Linux.  I do have a Windows install that I could use to try the Windows update if someone thinks it would help.

Am I looking at a bad flash ROM that doesn't write a certain region or some other hardware issue?  Any guesses, educated or otherwise?

I am using SL-5600 with the original Sharp ROM.

From what I am reading, VNC operation with the original ROM seems the easiest.

When I first got the SL-5600 I tried to use the original software and found it lacking in some areas.  Back then I did not have a laptop computer and demanded more from the Zaurus than just PIM functions.  Now I use it almost exclusively for PIM.

I may have to try the original ROM again if I want solid VNC server operation.

Download and install FB VNC Server on Zaurus.

Thanks for the response.

I have tried to install FB VNC Server on Hentges/Opie and Hentges/GPE in the past without success.  And both times I was using a wireless networking card to connect between the computer and the Zaurus.  Up till now, I have never successfully networked the Zaurus to the computer via USB.

So, while your answer is probably the best final step target. perhaps my question was not clear enough.  Let me ask it another way: On what Zaurus ROM is easiest/most reliable for setting up networking via USB and then installing a remote control technology like FB VNC?

Searching here in the forums I have noted that setting up these two things are problematic for many.  I want to understand what base install has been found to be the best place from which to start to get these features running.

One of the promises of my SL-5600 Poodle that I have never fulfilled is full remote control.  I am ready to tackle the issue.  Here is what I want to end up able to do:

1. Connect the Zaurus USB cradle to my notebook computer.
2. Place the Zaurus in the cradle.
3. With a few clicks and/or commands from the prompt, connect to the Zaurus.
4. Display the Zaurus desktop on my notebook screen and control it with the notebook mouse and keyboard.

In other words I want the Zaurus to have either an X server or a VNC server through the USB to my notebook.

This means I can keep all my PIM information in the Zaurus all the time without worrying about synchronization or copying data back and forth.  And, when I am running my notebook, I can use it's better input devices on the Zaurus.

I have always been using Opie from the Hentges ROM.  However, I want to use the ROM and configuration that will best (most easily and/or most reliably) accomplish the above dream.

Any suggestions on where to start?
