Security and Networking / Wifi Card Stopped Registering Properly
« on: June 01, 2006, 04:30:54 am »
Well...after reflashing again...I have now had mine working flawlessly for nearly a month.

It would appear that the problem (for me at least) was being caused by the async kernel.  I left it out this time around, and as I say, it has worked fine.

Assuming the AV400 has a standard HDD in it...couldn't you break the unit open, and connect the HDD directly to your PC to rip all the files off before you send it off for repair?

Just a thought

5x00 Hardware / Possible Charging Problems?

The 5500 chews up battery like crazy. even a 1800mAh battery will go quick. Although 1:50 does seem kinda fast. I usually get about 1:00-1:20ish on my stock battery. That's reading pdfs without backlight. And use home on SD as well.

Thanks for the benchmark mate...it's nice to have something to compare with.

Looking at that...1:50 playing mp3s with the backlight on half doesn't seem too bad.  I've always got the battery extender too

Hi Lauter,
In case you missed it, I sent you an email last week regarding my order which I still have not received (I paid you a month ago).
Waiting for your reply.

Update;  finally received the battery yesterday after 1 and half months of waiting.

So I did some simple tests, playing MP3s nonstop on my C860 with volume and screen brightness set at half.

Unfortunately at full charge this new battery (1800 mAh ?) lasted only 1 hr 53 mins, even less than my 2 year old original BL-06 (950 mAh) battery which lasted 2 hrs 8 mins.

So it seems I've received a defective battery too

I got a similar result with my 5500.  I don't think these batteries are performing as well as they should, however, it would've cost me considerably more to get hold of a genuine battery, so I'm still fairly happy

5x00 General discussions / 32/32 Vs 64/0 Mb Of Ram Which To Choose?
« on: May 07, 2006, 07:46:45 pm »
The advantages are that you get all 64MB to run apps, and that having /home on SD means that all of your apps and settings will survive a reset...and more inportantly...a total loss of power.

I tried the cacko rom with /home on SD, and it was completely unusable in terms of speed.  I thought it was the fact that I had a slow SD card, but decided to try tkrom.  I have found tkrom 2 alpha 3 with /home on SD to be excellent so far.  The device is extremely responsive, and I never find myself waiting around for apps to load etc.  Maybe it's not quite as fast as using internal ram, but I really can't tell the difference

Have a look here for tkrom:

https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showt...c=2259&hl=tkrom

One word of warning.  I was having problems with tkrom and my wireless CF.  I have reflashed the device, but this time I have not flashed the async kernel.  It has worked flawlessly since

BTW...what does the 'Charge' option do in the diagnostic menu. It is currently set to 'Off'.

Mine says the same on my c1000 in the Diag Menu...

Thanks for that mate...at least I know that setting is right

I have tested my new battery playing mp3s constantly with the volume at half, and the backlight (or frontlight) at half.  It lasted 1hr 50mins.  This seems quite reasonable, although my battery is supposed to be 1800mAh, so maybe not...however...as long as it's as good as the original sharp battery, then I'm not bothered, as I couldn't get hold of one of them anyway

Thinking about the battery life...I assume that it takes extra power to read and write to the SD card.  My /home is on SD, so, could this be accounting for the shorter life?  Also, the mp3s I was playing were on CF.

It took 1hr 15mins for the charging light to go off this time around.  This seems a little quick still...I'm sure I read somewhere that it should take around 3hrs to charge, but can't find the thread again   Can someone please tell me how long their 5500 takes to fully charge.

Cheers

5x00 Hardware / Possible Charging Problems?
« on: May 07, 2006, 12:06:31 pm »
I have had a look in the diagnostics menu, and (on a full charge) the battery voltage is reported as 644 (4.1V), which I assume is a good thing.  I'll have to run some tests, and see how long it is lasting.  I will take a reading from the diagnostic menu when the OS reports it is low on power too.

BTW...what does the 'Charge' option do in the diagnostic menu.  It is currently set to 'Off'.

5x00 Hardware / Possible Charging Problems?
« on: May 07, 2006, 10:27:09 am »
I bought my 5500 second-hand from ebay.  When I got it, I found that when I plugged the charger in, the charging light would go off after around 20 mins.  Obviously, the battery would wear down in no time at all.

I got one of the 1800mAh batteries from Lauter the other day, and now the battery light goes off after about 45 mins of charging.  Pulling the AC adapter out and putting it back in will bring the battery light back on for a few mninutes, but then it goes off again.

Could there be a problem with the charging circuit, or could it be that I need to condition the new bigger battery with a few charge/discharge cycles?

Cheers

General Discussion / Just Got A Zaurus Sl-5500, Has Problems
« on: May 02, 2006, 04:12:06 pm »
No probs mate...glad I could help

You may want eventually to consider using one of the ROMS that allows you to move /home onto your SD card.  I am using tkrom 2 at the moment, and although I had problems initially, I think I've solved those now (I'll post in the appropriate threads when I'm satisfied), and my 5500s apps and data will now survive a hard reset...say in the event of a total power failure

Security and Networking / Wifi Card Stopped Registering Properly
« on: May 01, 2006, 05:46:54 am »
I have posted this problem in a different thread, but wanted to give it its own for more visibility.

I flashed my 5500 to tkrom 2 alpha 3, with the async kernel, and /home on SD script.  Everything went fine until I put my wifi card in.  It was recognised correctly, but I didn't get the little network monitor icon on the taskbar with the option to connect, and the led on the card would come on, and stay on, whereas, when it is recognised correctly, it will flash a few times, then go off until I connect.  Running opera would bring up a connection box, but it would have no entries, even though the network settings were all correct.

I reflashed back to the Sharp ROM, and everything was OK.

I decided to give tkrom another try, and this time I tried the wifi card after every step.  I flashed the rom then tried it...flashed the async kernel, and tried again, and finally ran the prep-home-sd script using the -c option to copy my network settings across to the new /home.

The wifi card came up every time, and behaved as it should.  I did a few resets, with and without the card in, to see if it caused a problem.  It was still working.

After a few days of messing around (installing different software), it is now not working again.  The card is being recognised as usual, but now network connection icon, and the light comes on and stays solid again.

Any help would be most appreciated

Sharp ROMs / SL 5500 TCK ROM 2.0 Aplha 3 with Home on SD script
« on: April 30, 2006, 07:14:45 pm »
Ok...I've lost it again.  The card shows that it is recognised, as usual, but no network connection is hown, and if I run opera, it pops a net connection box, but there is nothing in the list.

Also, when I insert the card now, the light comes on and stays on, whereas, when it's working properly, the light only comes on when connected.

Any help would be very welcome
