I've also noticed the problem. I initially saw it in Termux Emacs but was confused as it seemed to work here and there in other apps. At least now I understand why. (I'm US English keyboard with the Android from the second x27 batch, no changes.)

I had an email from PC today and it said that the current UK batch was expected to arrive early next week.  So I suppose at least a few UK backers should have them by the end of next week, though hundreds of units will take a while to get out the door.  I've gotten my own DHL shipping notice (US, 20xx - originally a wifi only but recently upgraded to 4G) and should have it tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

Gemini PDA - Linux / Keyboard-friendly Linux desktop?

For the bare minimum, you could run just KWin and xfdesktop, the XFCE background displayer. Gives you a great WM plus a desktop applications menu for launching.
That was very useful, thank you. Looking forward to trying this with my Gemini.

Gemini PDA - General Discussion / Longer use review
« on: April 05, 2018, 04:01:00 pm »
Thanks for the review. It's good to know that the keyboard settles in. I know Planet has said this but with all the early quality issues, I guess some of us were a little wary.

I'm going to use my wifi version as a mobile computer, as I don't want to give up my phone's camera (the main Gemini downfall, IMO) so it sounds like I will be happy. Sometime in May. :-)

GPD - Linux OS / Multi-boot Linux/Android from USB?
« on: March 19, 2018, 01:28:30 pm »
Thanks.  I'm actually rethinking the USB flash drive option, as I've seen in my reading that the drives can get really hot. It might be best to just plan on reinstalling Windows after any experimenting.

BTW, the GPD Win is on the delivery truck today!

I have a GPD Win that should be here in about a week and I was wondering if anyone had set up a USB drive with multiple OS options?  I have a couple of low profile flash drives that would seem to be perfect for this, as they would barely stick out in back.  Any links would be appreciated.
I have only found instructions on how to install Arch Linux on the internal storage, alongside Windows:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GPD_Wi...with_Windows_10

It seems that it should be possible to boot at least a single OS from an USB drive:

Also, do the distro links out there for the Pocket work on the Win?
I believe not, I always see Linux for the Win and for the Pocket mentioned separately.

I don't want to partition and install Linux or Android directly, as I will probably pass this device on to one of my kids once I get my Gemini in hand and set up to dual boot.

Gemini PDA - Linux / Planet says new Linux info today
« on: February 19, 2018, 02:37:03 pm »
This update was tremendously disappointing, IMO.  I suppose at least being in the (hopefully) next batch I'll have plenty of time to get used to not having an out of the box, ready to use Linux device. And it will give everyone in the first batch time to test various options out.

While I would still prefer Debian, I would be happy with Ubuntu or Postmarket OS, though I'm not at all into Sailfish OS. (Both Postmarket and Sailfish have tons of non-working features, so doubly disappointed that they are considered viable options.)

Gemini PDA - General Discussion / SailfishOS on the Gemini?

I will be incredibly disappointed if SailfishOS is what comes installed.

Gemini PDA - Hardware / Using usb-c to connect to monitor

It's not just the HDMI licensing fee.  It's also the MediaTek chip. If you look at the phones using these chips, none of them have HDMI out, as it's not implemented.  That's the reason for the proprietary cable.

Gemini PDA - Linux / Gemini Keyboard Apps new name
« on: February 06, 2018, 03:57:00 pm »
I voted for GKA initially so the poll won't let me change my vote to GeminiKeyboardApps.  I prefer either of those because it's easy to remember and perfectly (specifically) named. The other options are too vague (IMO).

What planet said in your screen capture:
"Terry, we will provide direct boot into Linux on firmware versions. Regards, Planet"

Call me overly negative, but I suspect you are reading more into that than they actually said.

They did NOT say that Android and Linux were both going to be present in the firmware (eMMC) on shipped units.
They DID say that they, "will provide direct boot into Linux on firmware versions."

All the demo versions had Linux installed. In other interviews they said they were shipping units that would dual boot Android with Linux. None of us will know exactly how that is accomplished until we (or someone) gets their devices.

My problem with having Linux on any type of sd card is the limited write capability. I know some are better than others but it just sounds problematic. I will be disappointed if that's the way they do it.  (It's fine for a person to do that for themselves, of course. ) It would also make it more complicated to swap out the sd cards with your own data.

Gemini PDA - Linux / linux on Gemini
« on: February 02, 2018, 04:19:37 pm »
A month ago I asked PC about the Linux situation and their reply said it was in the firmware. You have to wade back through quite a few comments to see it.

I've never done an attachment here but will try to add the screen print of their reply.

Gemini PDA - General Discussion / Has mass production started?
« on: January 29, 2018, 03:56:43 pm »
I'm fatalistic about not making the pre-Chinese New Year batch (#2044, May 2017) but was kind of curious if anyone knew if wifi vs. 4G will make a difference?  It seems like it would make sense to do the wifi only units first, as there are fewer of them.

Gemini PDA - Android / Helio X27 Root and removing GAPPS ?
« on: January 09, 2018, 04:12:39 pm »
I don't know how they are handling the Linux install but Planet has said that the units will be delivered with the dual boot Linux ready to use.

And while I don't plan on rooting as my employer has started using iOs/Android mobile apps that won't run on rooted devices, being able to choose from multiple Linux setups on boot sounds good.

Does anyone know if there is an easy way to mirror the screen in Linux as you can with Android?

in one of the videos, it implied that linux video out was possible, but not dual display. I don't know what resolutions might be possible for this.

I was thinking about using Miracast until I could get the HDMI cable. A Google search tells me that Linux does potentially have the ability but successful implementation appears to be rare.
