Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Hentges Akita Installation Fails (abandoned)
« on: June 18, 2007, 03:59:13 am »
When holding 'ON' to perform the flash update with the correct files on my SD card, and choosing option 4 and selecting my SD card, I get an 'ok' prompt in Japanese.

It's acting as though it doesn't see the card.

These are the files I've used:

http://hentges.net/tmp/snapshots/Hentges-R...kita/updater.sh
http://hentges.net/tmp/snapshots/Hentges-R...20061108.tar.gz
http://hentges.net/tmp/snapshots/Hentges-R...61108024133.bin

I have properly renamed the images.

I had to take the updater.sh from a previous version because it did not exist for the current version.

I have performed a complete NAND restore from my original file and have booted into it to confirm that it works.

The SD device is detected and works as usual.  It's FAT16 and has been previously used for image installation.

So what can I do to install this image?  Nothing I've done works..

Sharp ROMs / Cacko Keyboard Mapping For A Us-101/104 Keyboard
« on: September 21, 2006, 06:32:07 am »
Has anyone out there done the remapping for a standard 101 keyboard?

I'd rather just use someone else's key mapping file than bother to do it myself..

My notes:

Code: [Select]
Most keys work just like the keyboard on the Zaurus itself.

    * Tap and release alt gives the menu.

^p      = ^left
^b      = left
shift-- = =  (minus)
shift-+ = ~  (plus)
shift-  = |  (space)
shift-; = +
shift-' = *
shift-[ = `

` = (nothing)
; = /
/ = ,
[ = @

F1 = standby  (the power button?)
F2 = help
F3 = escape
F4 = text editor
F5 = calendar
F6 = address book
F7 = Mail
F8 = (nothing)
F9 = pc link
F10= (nothing)
F11= (nothing)

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Installation Blues
« on: June 19, 2006, 07:10:16 pm »
The universe has shifted around, and now my installation for pdaxrom eludes me.  All my docs are wrong, my files are wrong and my helper scripts are wrong.  Hrm.

I'm trying to do an install of 1.1.0beta4 for a C1000.

I get the file from here:
http://mail.pdaxrom.org/download/1.1.0beta4/Zaurus-Cxx00/
http://mail.pdaxrom.org/download/1.1.0beta...ita-current.zip

The quick install guide says:
Quote
Extract the 3 files - initrd.bin tools.tar updater.sh - to the root of your CF or SD/MMC card.

This doesn't make sense, since the three files in the installation archive are:

* autoboot.sh
* kernel.img
* rootfs.img

... I'm confused.  =/

User Request for Applications / Updated Ruby And Rubygems Ipk
« on: June 19, 2006, 05:07:45 am »
http://rubyforge.org/projects/ruby/
http://rubyforge.org/projects/rubygems/

Ruby is up to 1.8.4, and an ipk file for rubygems would be handy.

I try a manual installation of RubyGems, and I get a string of errors.

The most interesting one seems to be:
Quote
/opt/QtPalmtop/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/rubygems/custom_require.rb:29: in `require': libcrypto.so.0.9.6: cannot load shared object file: No such file or directory - /opt/QtPalmtop/lib/ruby/1.8/arm-linux/digest/md5.so (LoadError)

I'm going to check with the ruby-talk mailing list.. maybe I can solve the install problem.

Accessories / Usb Keyboard Recommendations
« on: June 18, 2006, 05:34:01 pm »
I've been looking for USB keyboard solutions, and the only serious contender I've found is the Fellowes Stowaway Folding keyboard
http://www.conics.net/catalog/product_info...&products_id=96

I don't want to use an IR keyboard, because I want to use my C1000 in landscape mode, and I'd rather not have yet another thing with batteries.  =)

What other solutions are there, for a portable USB keyboard?

I'd prefer to have a keyboard which does not require a powered USB hub.

---

Also, I've done a bunch of searching and I found references to people having trouble with their external keyboard, because they key mapping is different for the inline vs external keyboards.  How big a problem is this?

* Has anyone created the new keymapping configuration files for their external keyboard?
* Has anyone whipped up some scripting to swap their keyboard mappings when they use their external keyboard?
* Has anyone found a way to automate that kind of keyboard re-configuration?

Site Suggestions, Requests, and Updates / Update The Wiki Already
« on: June 18, 2006, 02:59:23 am »
https://www.oesf.org/index.php?title=User_talk:Sysy

    *  Special:Version reports that you're using a truly ancient version of MediaWiki. It's fast and painless to update.
          o Back everything up (the database and files)
          o delete the maintainance directory.
          o Uncompress the latest version, overwriting the existing files.
          o Edit AdminSettings.php (see AdminSettings.sample for info) to add the database info.
          o cd maintainance;php update.php

    * enable $wgSpamRegex
          o Mine bans all div tags: $wgSpamRegex="/<div/i";
          o You might like: $wgSpamRegex="/overflow\s*:\s*auto/i";

    * Install Bad Behavior my notes (http://jrandomhacker.info/Bad_Behavior) .. it's VERY easy to install.

    * Install http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/SpamBlacklist_extension .. it's a bit annoying but it's worth it.

At this point you could probably safely allow anonymous editing again.

    * Update MediaWiki:Sidebar
          o See mine (http://jrandomhacker.info/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Sidebar) for info.

I have all kinds of notes on http://jrandomhacker.info/MediaWiki especially MediaWiki security (http://jrandomhacker.info/MediaWiki_security) and MediaWiki tricks and tips (http://jrandomhacker.info/MediaWiki_tricks_and_tips).

..

Benefits of updating:

    * Security security security!
    * Speed improvements:
    * Administrator improvements. It's a lot easier to administer ex.: change the sidebar, change the css, change the javascripts all within the wiki. Better banning, reversions, etc.
    * Better recent changes (like not displaying your own edits)
    * Email features -- get notified of changes via email.
    * and lots more..

I've been collecting programming resources for a little while now:

http://jrandomhacker.info/Sharp_Zaurus_SL-series/programming

The notes are rough, as I haven't gone very deep into anything.  It is, however, the best resource out there right now, as I've scoured through all sorts of stuff to get links and notes. .. unless I missed something.  =)

My primary interest is Ruby development, but I want to be able to recompile my favourite desktop software for my SL-C1000.

I realise that it's a learning curve, but I'm interested in learning more about cross-compiling, so that I can help recompile software to the Zaurus architecture.

Is there a concice HOWTO for this, or will I be making it?  =)

My current concerns are:
* What Zaurus distribution supports what kinds of cross-compiling?
* What tools / files are necessary for what kinds of cross-compiles?
* How do I use the various tools? (presumably each has a homepage and a HOWTO)

I think that I will most likely be interested in pdaXrom, as that appears to be by far the most hacker-friendly distribution and is supportive of a contemporary Linux kernel and such.  However, some more knowledge is needed before I can decide.

OpenEmbedded keeps being brought up, so I have to investigate just what the heck that's all about.

..

So.. if you have a favourite resource, or keep one on your own.. or you are a developer yourself or otherwise have cross-compiling or packaging experience, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts, get your links and spruce up my own notes while I learn.

For the brave.. the document is, of course, anonymously-editable.  =)

User Request for Applications / Encfs
« on: June 17, 2006, 09:22:11 pm »
I saw the BestCrypt request, but thought I'd request something better.

EncFS [1] allows a regular user to create, mount and use an encrypted filesystem transparently.

It uses FUSE [2] (Filesystem in Userspace) which I heard is already compiled in some kernels, although I'm not sure which.

Deals and Great Z Buys / Dynamism Sl-c1000 For $339 Usd
« on: June 17, 2006, 09:00:11 pm »
http://dynamism.com/sl-c3000/pricing.shtml

I picked one of these up, and it was mint in the package and has been working like a treat.  I got a spare world voltage AC adaptor and everything came to $400 including shipping, which took _two days_ to get to me.

They were very good to me.  It even got stopped at the border and I got a couple of phone calls, but it was cleared up in no time flat and rushed to me.  Fedex even redirected the shipment to my work so I could get it sooner.  =)

Sharp ROMs / Cacko Ipkg Dependancies
« on: June 17, 2006, 02:32:00 pm »
The package manager.. doesn't.  It's just a frontend to the ipkg tools.

I searched around and found a reference to ldd, but that isn't right for ipk files.

The packaging guidelines say:
Quote
6.  The package control file should list all dependency information in the "Depends:" field.  All dependencies (libraries, etc.) should be on the feed as well.

How do I:
1. Determine the requirements of a particular package (before installing it)?
2. Determine the installed-size of a package before it is installed?
3. Determine the combined installed size of a package and all its dependancies?
4. Automatically install all dependancies?

1. Now I can see things like
Code: [Select]
ipkg depends .ipk
which happens to have failed when I tried it thusly:
Code: [Select]
ipkg depends ruby_1.8.0-1_arm.ipk
Quote
ipkg_depends: ERROR: Package name ruby_1.8.0-1_arm.ipk contains illegal characters (should be [a-zA-Z0-0.+-])
error

ipkg info doesn't seem to do anything for that package.

Indeed it looks like running ipkg at the commandline is generally a bad idea, as I was unable to "manually" install ruby using the ipkg program.  Strange.

2. I assume I can take a peek inside the archives and do some math.  Is there a better way to do this?

3. Presumably this is possible with some scripting voodoo.  Is there a better way?

4. Since viewing the dependancy of a package fails, I presume that this is impossible.

...

How does everyone else handle packages?

Sharp ROMs / Angstrom Installation
« on: June 17, 2006, 09:03:19 am »
This probably isn't the right place to put this thread, but there isn't an "other" category.

I was going to try installing the 2006-04-28 preview, but I cannot find an initrd.bin  ..  the installation instructions mention it.

* http://ewi546.ewi.utwente.nl/angstrom/unstable/images/akita/
* http://www.angstrom-distribution.org/c1000...ll-instructions

13
I did this:

* Download the files from: http://ewi546.ewi.utwente.nl/mirror/www.op...le/3.5.3/c1000/
* Follow the install instructions: http://openzaurus.berlios.de/Akita/Install

Upon reboot, I get:

INIT: ld "ln" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes

Ideas?

And if OZ is all about GPE vs Opie, where do I make this decision?  Did I download a mega-bundle which includes both software packages?  I feel that I missed something completely, and the installation instructions left something very very important out (i.e. how to get and install GPE or Opie separately)

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / What's The Point?
« on: June 16, 2006, 08:30:20 pm »
http://openzaurus.org/wordpress/about/

OpenZaurus has two GUIs:

*  Opie, which, though it started as a fork of the Qtopia codebase, has quite surpassed it in nearly every way, and includes numerous additional applications, such as the user manager, drawpad, et cetera.
* GPE, a X/GTK based environment which aims to give you full featured graphic environment like you are used to on a ‘normal’ computer.

I don't understand.  Both Opie and GPE provide a complete environment.

Why does OZ exist?
What is OZ providing that's different from GPE/Opie?
Why does it still rely on the efforts of GPE/Opie instead of surpassing/supplanting them?
Why doesn't the team abandon OZ and support one or both of GPE/Opie directly?

Not trying to be inflammatory.. I'm just confused over why OZ exists at all and why it's chained to other projects in the way that it is.

Sharp ROMs / Quake On Cacko
« on: June 15, 2006, 09:47:11 pm »
Quake starts in a portrait mode.  When I went looking for solutions I couldn't find anything that worked.

I tried menu_video but it always segfaults quake.

pocket quake mentions "vid_mode 2" for 320x240 landscape right.. but vid_mode is not recognised.

I'm not sure where the configuration files are kept.  In fact, the file search feature does not find the word "quake" in any filename!

Has anyone played quake?  If so, how did you make it work?  =)

-------------

[edit] -- mysteriously, when exiting konsole the proper quake fired right up.  Wierd!

Now my concern is that the cursor keys seem to be backwards.  back for forward, left for right..  "invert mouse" does not solve this.
