Software / Note Taking App - Suggestions?
« on: September 28, 2006, 04:42:42 am »
This is driving me mad. I've searched the web high and low, I've scoured every related post on this site but can't find a note taking app that suits my needs.

I've got an SL-C3200 with CackoLite and I'm looking for a simple notes app that can have categories associated with the notes.

Can anyone recommend something? Being able to export them in one go (or at least back them up) would be nice too.

Sharp ROMs / Smallest Sharp Rom
« on: September 25, 2006, 05:50:08 am »
Is there a way to build a minimal sharp ROM?
Or can I get one prebuilt?
Or can I just install/uninstall software then just do a backup? Will there be settings/shared files left over?

After playing with all the ROM's I've finally settled on Sharp ROM cause it just works! I'm currently using TRIsoft English Sharp ROM which has a few extras and I've finally decided that Kopi is actually quite good. Movies and music is the only other thing I use. I'd be interested in the tetsu kernal but can't find english info/download. Movies seem a bit slow in the standard ROM.

What I want to do though is get the right software for my needs and nothing more, then do a backup so it's easy to get it back the way I want it.

So what's the easiest way to acheive this?

Cheers,
Dob

Linux Applications / Pdaxrom Gui Development
« on: September 14, 2006, 06:09:10 pm »
I've got gcc installed and compiled and run a basic C++ hello world program but I'd like  to do some GUI development preferably so that it looks nice on XFCE. I've done C++ development in the past but it's been solely on Win32. Now I'm mainly a Java/C# developer with a bit of Ruby on Rails thrown in for good measure (you get the picture).

So what do I need to do GUI development? Can anyone point me at some documentation? I've heard about FLTK but not really sure where to start. Just not sure where to start.

Thanks,
Dob.

Accessories / Is It Just Me Or Are The Accessories Crap?
« on: September 14, 2006, 04:28:47 pm »
When I got my new Z I order a metal stylus and screen protector from fig labs.

I've just lost my second stylus. The first one lasted a mere 30 minutes until it fell to the floor and the nib popped off. This is from a desk to a soft carpet floor. I wasn't expecting that. Well the people at Figlabs sent another one and I have to say that it managed to last a whole month until just now when I pulled it out of the Z and was left just holding the end. Not impressed.

Of course to complete the story I must say that I've also given up on the screen protector. When I placed it on the screen I managed to get a couple of specs of dust underneath it. After a while I couldn't bear it anymore and decided to remove the protector to clean it. Apparently it washes clean. Yea right. After very carefully washing it I was just lowering back onto the screen when I noticed that it wasn't at all clean. You see the underside is sticky, naturally, so that it adheres to the screen of the Z. Of course this tends to attract dust and so by removing it I had got even more dust on the sticky side. Any attempts to clean it resulted in an even more unfavorable condition than previously.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as would any notes of sympathy!

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Is Fltdj A Bit Buggy?
« on: September 14, 2006, 09:26:12 am »
Is it me or is The Daily Journal a little buggy. It's almost what I want from a PIM although it's a little simple. However, I've noticed that when adding contacts it sometimes removes others.

I'm tempted to write my own version as I'd like to optimize it for the Zaurus and add a few extra things such as a prioritizing todo's as well as make it look a little nicer in XFCE.

I'd just like to check though to make sure it's nothing I'm doing wrong before I embark on this mammoth task

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Still Got Problems With Power Mgnt & Time
« on: September 11, 2006, 05:27:01 pm »
I've been playing with pdaXrom for a month and it's starting to become just about usable. However, I still struggling in two key areas that I can't find any info on.

Power Management
When plugging/unplugging the power cable it doesn't seem to switch to the correct light & power settings. This only happens when I then go to the light & power dialog it then changes.

Date/Time/Timezone/Daylight savings
I read somewhere that you could pull a file from linux to use on the Z and I've tried grabbing it from a linux emulation (on Windows) but without much success. If anyone can point me at the correct timezone file for UK I'd be grateful.

Linux Applications / Ruby, Rails, Sqlite3, Gems, Rake On Pdaxrom
« on: September 06, 2006, 08:33:30 am »
I've trawled this site for information on setting up the aforementioned development solution but have yet to find the one shining light of success.

I've seen posts claiming working Ruby 1.8.4 + Gems but either there was no link or instructions or the ipk didn't live up to the posted comments (I'm not having a go. I'm certainly not ruling out my own stupidity!).

I've seen posts asking if anyone has done it (Ruby-SQLite3) before they tried themselves.

I have installed Ruby and it seems to work although I didn't really stress it. running gem gave me the error "gem: command not found".

I installed RubyGems and did "gem install rails" but after saying: "Bulk updating Gem source index for: http://gems.rubyforge.org" it then comes up with "terminated" (very helpful). I did set the profile env variables as follows:
Code: [Select]
export RUBYLIB=/usr/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/
export GEM_HOME=/usr/rubygems/
export PATH=/usr/rubygems/bin:$PATH
I realise this is probably not in the correct place but this was ruby's default.

So after failing with gem I grabbed the rails zip instead but now I'm stuck on getting the SQLite bindings and I really can't find these anywhere. I'm not a seasoned linux user let alone developer so don't really want to tackle porting just yet. Of course I could probably use MySQL but SQLite is ... er ... lite(!) so would prefer to use it. It also fits better with what I want to develop (on-device rails apps. You don't really want to run a DB engine unless you're using it).

If anyone has had success with this setup I'd love to hear about it and if any advice can be given all the better.

Many thanks.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Could Not Open Default Font 'fixed'
« on: August 11, 2006, 05:41:56 am »
I've been playing around with XFCE and it's really sweet. Initially I installed it and the packages from Chero's contrib and it was working fine. Then I grabbed all files from the offical xfce feed and installed them all. Now I get this error:

Code: [Select]
# startxfce4
Loading /etc/sysconfig/keyboard/kernal.map

Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed'
XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.
#

I've also since installed onto the HDD as I ran out of space.

BTW is it possible to easily uninstall a load of packages (for example all the xfce packages)? So I can try again and just install a few.

I'm guesing I need some font package but I can't seem to find the right one.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Problems Connecting Z To Pc Running Xp
« on: August 04, 2006, 08:45:21 pm »
Ok I give up!

Well not quite but I give up trying to solve the problem myself!

I've got the 3200 and I've been playing around with different roms. One thing I noticed was that OZ didn't seem to successfully connect to my windows box. I carried on with cacko and that was fine. Syncing, playing music everthing worked fine. So now I'm back on OZ 3.5.4.1 (Opie) wondering why I'm still trying it when cacko works fine (other than some other software I want that I think is only available for OZ (although I best double check that). So I know the hardware is ok.

Connecting the usb cable to the PC nothing happens what-so-ever. I'm a serious newb when it comes to linux so bear with me.

Network Settings show the usb0 (and usbd0 although I have no idea why there is two) to be disconnected (whether I connect the cable or not).

I tried installing some modules such as g-ether and some others I can't remember from the feeds but that didn't seem to help.

* lsmod shows no modules loaded.
* ifconfig -a only shows the loopback interface and sit0 whatever that is
* iface appears to be an unknown command
* lsusb returns nothing
* the syslog tells me that a usb hub was found
* tried to start the interface in the gui and also select it for always on but it still doesn't appear as connected and also doesn't show up in ifconfig.

I really don't know what to do. I've looked at all the guides and posts but there is usually something I can't do generally involving the command not being found.

I've spent a week messing around with this thing so if anyone can help I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks.

General Discussion / What Does Clearance Delay Mean On Dhl Tracking
« on: July 26, 2006, 11:55:22 am »
Just ordered from Price Japan and my 3200 is at Heathrow Airport. It's current status is 'Clearance Delay'. Is it anything I need to worry about? Searched the web and forums but can't find anything about what this means.

Sent a contact request to DHL but a colleague said I probably won't get a response.

General Discussion / Hi And Some Questions About The C3200
« on: July 21, 2006, 08:25:31 am »
Hi guys thought I'd take the oportunity to say hello from England. Looks like a wealth of tips and helpful people here so thanks in advance!

I have a few questions before I go ahead and purchase the latest Zaurus (I'll number the questions so it's easy for people to repond if they can). First though here are my reasons for wanting one (other than because they are so darn cool!). I want it to replace my Laptop, filofax and mp3 player. I'm an IT Contractor (Software Dev to be exact) and I use my filofax quite a bit to take notes, ideas, todos, calendar etc. I also have quite a powerful laptop but to be honest I don't really use it much other than to watch DVD's in my hotel room and maybe do a bit of programming. I also play the odd computer game but I could live without that use.

Is this a sensible choice (1)? I want to be able to do all of the things that I can do with my filofax like take notes, draw diagrams etc. Listen to MP3's. Do some Ruby on Rails programming and watch DVD's if pos.

I've had a look around and it seems you can get Ruby but not the latest version which I will probably need for Rails development. Would I be able to hack the standard linux ruby package to get it to work on the Zaurus (2)?

I'm not exactly a guru when it comes to linux but that is also one of the reasons I want to get one. To begin with I'll just be playing around with it so won't be ditching the other hardware until I am happy with the distro I'm using etc. Speaking of which what distro to people recommend for what I want to do (3)? Would I also need a linux desktop machine (4)? My 4.5 machines are all XP (well except the .5!)

I've read the handwritting recognition is less than pleasent. Are there any natural langauge apps that would solve this problem (5)? Not essential but it would nice. The Windows Mobile recognition is awesome. A friend of mine has the SPV and his writting is aweful yet WM has no problem deciphering it. That's the only thing I like about it though!!

As I will be tinkering around with the little thing can anyone recommend reference material, books etc that would be useful with my limited knowledge of linux.

eek! Sorry for the long post!
