General Discussion / Burned Out Screen, Loose Cable Or?
« on: April 24, 2007, 05:06:56 pm »
My c860 which may have been dropped one time too many has alternating horizontal blue and black bars when I reboot and login.  Then the colors look washed out although text is still readable.  Photos have bars too.

Anyone have a dx or tx for these symptoms.  Thanks

General Discussion / Is There Ever Going To Be A New Z
« on: October 16, 2006, 06:33:18 pm »
Anyone have any speculation on if and  when Sharp will introduce another Zaurus.  Am I wrong in thinking that a model with X86 chip (and usual wishlist, larger screen, thiner form factor, bluetooth, wireless G,,,) that could run linux or windows xp would crush most blackberrys and UMPCs.

Maybe they should change the name of the company to "not so sharp".

As is I'm stuck waiting for a UMPC that people will confuse with sushi, Averatec Ahi.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / C700 Xfce What Files To Delete 4 Memory Boost
« on: January 09, 2006, 02:28:41 am »
I'm trying to run kdepim on a c700.  Most applications on ext2 sd card.  But I'm only using xfce so there are probably default windows manager files that could be deleted.  I learned the hard way not to delete matchbook files.  NAND backup saved me.

What can I safely delete.  Its almost running smoothly if I can delete another 2k.  Thx

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Pdaxrbluetooth Blues Socket Revg To Moto E815,
« on: November 26, 2005, 11:41:31 pm »
Sdptools is able to read the mac address from my motorola phone and confirm that DUN is enabled. Cardctl identifies the card correctly consistent with the usart config file. But the two bluetooth GUIs seem to ignore the card. PPP dialer won't recognize rfcomm 0 device, and and PPP modem won't find DUN. I have tried manually entering the phone MAC address and DUN channel into the relevant file but the modem, if you save the settings, overwrites the file, so that when you reboot right after bluetooth starts you get a complaint about parse line 3 error.

Very frustrating because it is close to working. I'm using RC11 on an c860. Any help gratefully appreciated.

I'm really worried because someone earlier this month was unable to find a solution to this problem. https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=16016&st=0

I'm also trying to connect directly using pppd so I would welcome any suggestions on how to bypass the GUIs using the terminal.  In theory, I have the relevant info, like phone bluetooth address but in practice I have not even figured out how to copy text from the terminal.

I'll be checking the board every few hours over the weekend when I'm not on kid watch.

Thanks so much.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Gq"no"view On Pdaxrom Help Please
« on: August 23, 2005, 02:14:52 am »
I'm playing with pdaxrom on my wife's future c700 (I have a c860 with the sharp ROM).
I'd love to switch fully to X but my second biggest use (besides the awesome Kopi pim) is toggling the SD card between my digital camera and Z which is how I pass the time with adult friends at Safari Sam and chucky cheeze kid birthday partys.  For some reason (FAT 16 formatting of the SD card?) GQviewer cannot see my SD card photos (thumbnails of question marks, even after installing the older stable version of GQview, otherwise I am using RC10).  I have no problems using GQview in slackware.

I must be missing something obvious as many list GQview as a core pdaxrom application.  Please help someone with middle aged dementia (unlike my six year old who can dual boot on the laptop between windows and slackware).

General Discussion / C860 Fell Out Of Sportcoat Pocket
« on: June 30, 2005, 03:23:52 am »
Ever since when I try to shift it to tablet mode it shuts down.  When restarted the keyboard does not work until soft reset.  I have the same problem if I close the z without first shutting it off using the back button.   I bought it from Pricejapan.  Great company.  Unless someone knows an alternative (I'd pay to have it repaired in Portland, Oregon) I guess it is going back to Japan via Pricejapan for warranty service.  Frustrating because it is mainly usable.  Anyone know the turnaround time for Pricejapan repairs.  I'm guessing four to six long weeks.

I dropped my 5600 (and samsung i330, what a kluts) many times without any problems.  The hinge mechanism is the achilles heal of the clamshell models.

Cxx0 General discussions / Any Way To Get Out Of The 860 Gui On Startup
« on: January 25, 2005, 08:03:59 pm »
The english instructions I found on the web for c860 mentioned pressing db prior to start up as a way to get a login prompt. Doesn't work even though I pulled out the battery overnight.   I remember finding some trick to doing this on 5600 but now i have an 860.

One of the things I like about slackware is that the default in a non GUI login and you have to type startx for the gui.  That way when the gui gets fried you can still maneuver.  Even a non-linux type like me gets to learn a bit about command line. How do i escape qtopia on 860 startup.

Cxx0 General discussions / Command Line As Su Help Needed
« on: January 23, 2005, 10:43:31 am »
I just got a japenese z 860 from pricejapan.  Is there a konsole ap somewhere (some of the ap titles in japanese) or a way when booting to enter a command as superuser.  There is a command on the c3000 that supposedly rolls it back to english and I want to try it on the c860.  Appreciate any help.

In any event I am going to try the video player on the z be4 flashing pdxrom.  It only plays mpeg4 but it seems easy to convert files from mpeg2 to mpeg4.

Cxx0 Hardware / Just Got C860 Does Reconv Work
« on: January 22, 2005, 11:39:31 pm »
My c860 came (pricejapan rocks) and I'd like to try some of the native rom's aps be4 flashing pdxrom.  I read about reconv in a review of the c3000 quoted below.  Anyone know if it works with the c860.  Have not a clue where or if there is a konsole ap or another way to enter a command as su.

"After discussing the translation issues with Dynamism Support, they told me that you can use the command reconv as the super-user to completely convert the device to English as well as enlarge the fonts"

General Discussion / Run slackware on new sony?
« on: June 21, 2004, 02:31:55 am »
I was wondering whether this might be an alternative to pdaxROM for running xfce, abiword, gimp et al. It has laptop processer so conventional linux should work assuming driver can handle the screen.

http://www.pdabuyersguide.com/notebooks/so...ny_vaio_U50.htm
More than a pound and no thumb typing keyboard. How lame.   But the rest of it looks promising 4 linux assuming proprietary sony does not have an open software autodestruct sequence

Off Topic forum / Does Nexio+3G+WIFI+linux+thinclients=future zaurus

Lame operating system aside unlimitted WIFI / 3G phone clamshell keyboard combo may be the future for zaurus hardware.

In this configuration nothing would stop the zaurus from running both full blown linux and windows using thin clients. Killer Ap might be full IBM via voice dictation via thin client application coupled to text messaging and email.  Without VMware I get the full microsoft office (stuck with outlook at work) by a thin client that works fine through firefox on Suse linux laptop.  I notice they have an old client for linux PDA processors.  Has anyone gotten it to work with any zaurus.

If sharp had any marketing they could poke fun at microsoft powered phones that crash twice weekly losing all the address data until resync (like my Samsung i330).  Linux makes a lot of sense on a phone laptop replacement convergence device.
