Zaurus - pdaXrom / C860 + Beta1 New Install/new User/new Problems
« on: January 30, 2007, 05:46:15 pm »
I have not been following this group and there is a lot to search, but is there a "beta1 fix annoying issues guide or site"?

The good:

Install was easy, just like Cacko.
Getting my WiFi and Socket Rev L BT working was easy.
PAN networking to my 3G phone was also easy.  Avg speed is about 320 kbits with scp, 400 kbits with wget.
Feed has all the goodies I need.  Installing them now.
GUI faster than X/Qt.

The bad:

Window manager not as efficient as others.  Looking for recommendations to get me started quickly.  I was using blackbox with X/Qt.  Replacement WM should have links to all apps.  Unsure how this works with pdaXrom.  Perhaps it is just a setup issue.  Adding the task applet helped a lot.

The ugly:

Getting random blank screen and suspend.  I have shutoff both with the taskbar applet, but it still happens.  UPDATE: Fixed, there is a conflict with the blanking applet and the power settings.  I had to kill the blanking applet.

The very ugly, this could be a deal breaker:

Using BT PAN with Socket Rev L I get corrupted packets.  I know it is not my phone because I do not have this problem with Win/XP + Phone 3G or Cacko + Ambicom BT.  I know I have 2 variables here.  I will test Ambicom BT later.  That may prove nothing since they use different BT stack components.  UPDATE:  pdaXrom + Ambicom BT, no problem.  Is there a newer BlueZ for beta1?

Looking for a little direction here.  My top reason to switch to pdaXrom was getting my Socket BT to work.

Thanks.

Sharp ROMs / Cacko 1.23/socket Cf Bt Rev L Not Working
« on: January 18, 2007, 03:21:58 pm »
I just obtained a Socket CF BT to replace my Hagiwara sys-com (blue monkey) CF adapter.

Cacko 1.23 (c860) did recognize the CF card as "Socket Bluetooth Card v2.5", but I am unable to communicate with it.  E.g. hcitool scan fails with "Device is not available: No such device".

lsmod returns:

hidp
rfcomm
l2cap [hidp rfcomm]
pxa_bi
storage_fb
usbdcore
usbdmonitor
hci_uart (unused)
bluez [hipd rfcomm l2cap hci_uart]
serial_cs (unused)
sharp_mmcsd_m

What am I missing?

Thanks.

Software / Cannot Get 320x240 Video To Play Full Screen
« on: November 24, 2005, 10:57:52 am »
I just upgraded from Cacko 1.21a to 1.23.  With 1.21a I was using Kino 4.2 + mplayer-w100_1.0.0-1.  I was able to play prerotated 320x240 29.97FPS 512br video from my tivo with no audio sync or any other problems.  Life was good.

Cacko 1.23 has kino 4.3c + mplayer 1.5.1.1 (AFAIK).  I am unable to get the same 320x240 video to play at any size other than a small 320x240 window.

I have tried smart crop (does nothing), -scale 640:480 (does not play), checking Scale to screen (I get a full screen green screen with audio), -vf crop=640:480 (green screen).

I do not want to have to downgrade to get it working again.  Looking for suggestions.

Thanks.

Are there any benchmarks or data on performance including battery performance?

So far there isn't a strong argument to upgrade.

Thanks.

Software / Tivotogo + Cacko + Kino First Attempt
« on: February 16, 2005, 12:27:24 pm »
If you spend a lot of time on the road and your wife is deleting your Tivo content because you are too busy to watch it, then I suspect that Tivotogo on your Z may have crossed your mind.

This is my first attempt.  I am not sure that I will pursue this.  Doing a cost(time)/benefit analysis indicates that this is becoming a hobby more than a tool to save me time.

"togo" is a strong word.  Many like myself think of "togo" as fast, quick, and easy.  Untrue in this case.  It takes 90 minutes for every 60 minutes of video on your Tivo just to network copy to your PC.  Plan ahead.  Using Dr. Divx to convert to .avi files takes 2-3 times the duration of the recorded program.  Again plan ahead.  My advice: copy your .tivo files in the day, batch encode at night.  Give yourself 6 minutes in the morning of the next day just to copy your .avis to your 4GB micro drive for every 60 minutes of recorded video.

Quite a pain, but there are rewards...  I got a flat tire (3 nails) today, it took an hour to fix.  I had nothing to read, but I did have "Nova - The Viking Deception.avi" on my Z and my iPod ear buds.

Converting Tivotogo (.tivo) files to .avi.  I have tried 3 different methods with varying success.

1.  TMPGEnc.  Others have reported problems using this method.  I also had problems.  I can get the audio, but not the video.  It is an issue with codex installed.  In my attempts to get this working I did happen on a good article titled "Codex Hell".

2.  Graphedit.  This solution is more work than TMPGEnc.  It involves splitting the DirectShow stream into audio and video then using a Muxer to splice back together rendering a stanard .mpg file.  You still have to convert to .avi.  I also had problems with the resulting .mpg file.

3.  Dr. Divx.  I preferred this method.  A single tool with lots of options to easily convert my .tivo files to .avi.  It has 2 problems reported by many.  1.  No rotate option or filter available, this means the Z has to software rotate, not a show stopper.  2.  Audio not in sync with video.  This is NOT a Z issue, but a resulting .avi file issue.  Windows also has problems playing the .avi file.  However for me it is good enough.  I only Tivo science programs, and it is 95% narration (i.e. no moving lips to worry about).  For me it is good enough.

Viewing on the Z:

I am using Cacko 1.21a on my c860 with Kino 0.4.2 with the latest w100 mplayer.  I watch all programming from my 4GB micro drive.

Dr. Divx has a Portable Profile.  i.e. 600/80 video/audio bit rate at 320x240.  I have been using the default and the default Kino options with scale (full screen) selected.  On occasion there is a micro pause, but nothing to complain about.  My initial attempt to watch my first encoded .avi file with the old Kino and mplayer was greeted with great surprise.  My expectations had clearly been exceeded (my expectations were very low).  Upgrading Kino/mplayer and over clocking while playing results in very viewable television.

640x480 .avi files play slower, unacceptably slow.  The resolution was not very improved.  BTW the .tivo files are 480x360 (actually 480x480 with a large blank upper boarder).  Using Virtualdub I was able to prerotate, lower the bit rate (to 500) and clean up the time shifted audio.  This helps, but Virtualdub is taking an existing .avi and reencoding it.  This effects the output making the original 320x240 attempts with a lot less work look better.  Unfortunately Virtualdub at this time cannot read the .tivo files.  If only it would use DirectShow to read.  I suspect that others will find ways to make Dr. Divx/Virtualdub 640x480 output that runs well, but why all the effort for something that I am going to watch once and delete?  I am not interested archiving or redistributing quality video.  On a 3.3" screen arms length away 320x240 is good enough for TV.

Long story short:

1.  Save yourself some time.  Use Dr. Divx Portable Profile and over clock your Z, or lower the bitrate to 512 or 384 if you do not want to over clock.
2.  Over clocked Z can watch 2 hours of video on a single charge.
3.  MythTVtogo.  Consider building your own PVR with MythTV and scripting your .avi.  This was my initial idea some time ago, but just no time to implement it.
4.  There are other methods ot getting content of your Tivo, however this is more work than I am interested in doing.

Legal stuff:  Don't pirate video.  Over clocking can damage your Z (or so it has been argued).  Over clock at your own risk.

I have read multiple posts on the subject, but have been unable to determine precisely what will work best.  I am willing to do a some experimenting, but would like some direction.

I have been using Dr Divx to convert my 2GB 1 hour .tivo files to 300MB .avi files.  I have to say that I was quite impressed with the performance of Cacko 1.21a with its stock kino.  After updating to kino .4.2 and the latest mplayer it appears as if I am watching TV (Scale to screen is checked).

Video info:  320x240, DX50, Bitrate: 600320, FPS: 29.97
Audio info:  Codec: mad, Rate: 44100, Bitrate: 80000, Channels: 2

I thought I'd try a higher res version of the same video:

Video info:  480x352, DX50, Bitrate: 800856, FPS: 29.97
Audio info:  Codec: mad, Rate: 44100, Bitrate: 64000, Channels: 2

but, it is noticeably not as smooth as the 320x240 video.  320x240 is good enough, but I would like to know how far I can push the c860 in terms of video performance.

I have also noticed that I have to have rotate checked.

Questions:

1.  Will Cacko 1.22a improve performance?  If so, by how much?  Currently I am using Cacko 1.21a with Kino 0.4.2 and latest w100 mplayer.
2.  Will pre rotation improve performance?  If so, by how much?  Currently I see no way to get Dr Divx to do this, but will explore.
3.  What video formats perform the best from 4GB CF disk?
4.  Should I overclock?  Currently not overclocking.
5.  How do I measure frame rates?
6.  What is the best hires performance you have seen?  How did you get it?
7.  What are the sustainable bitrates for a 4GB CF HD?

Thanks.

X/Qt / Xqt advice (unsolicited)
« on: July 06, 2004, 04:47:10 pm »
Running apps:

Some of you may notice strange behavior with X/qt and some applications (extra large fonts, huge buttons, etc...).  There is a bug in xqt-server .9 that incorrectly reports the physical geometry of the screen (e.g. on the c860 it is reported as 8mmx6mm, this sets the DPI to 2032x2032).

Using xqt-server .8 resolves this problem.  Looking at the CVS tree the only differences I see from .8 to .9 is support for dynamic screen rotation.  Others may want to take a more careful look.

Development:

Just install the standard Zaurus cross-compile environment in /opt/Embedix and /opt/Qtopia, then extract both tar balls in / (they will extract in opt/Embedix and I have confirmed that they do not replace any critical files).

x-devel_4.3.0.1_arm.tar.gz
glib-gtk-zlib-devel_0.0.1_arm.tar.gz

xmkmf may error, you might have to run xmkmf from x86 Linux to create makefiles then edit.

For configure use as a base:

export X11R6=/opt/Embedix/tools/arm-linux/X11R6
./configure --host=arm-linux --build=i686-linux --x-includes=$X11R6/include --x-libraries=$X11R6/lib

Getting apps:

Many pdaXrom apps work as is, as do many from http://packages.debian.org/stable/ (you will have to convert from ar to tar first).  Worse case you build them yourself.  Here are some that I have built:

Software / MAME for c860
« on: June 16, 2004, 09:52:57 pm »
I am running Cacko 1.21b/c860 and just finished testing 3 different MAME implementations with the same pacman clone.

MaxMAME:  Very slow almost unusable.

xmame.SDL:  Slow.

Both MaxMAME and xmame.SDL did a great job of running as close to full screen as possible, however slow.  Both use SDL.  I used SDL libSDL_1.2.6-zports-4_arm.ipk.  I am not sure if xmane.SDL used the zports version or not it may have been static and I do not have ldd installed.

zmamefull:  Fast, almost perfect with good sound.  If I enable overclock it is right one with sound, however not full screen and does not use SDL.  With zmamefull a pixel is a pixel and attemps to scale cause it to crash with no error.  Y scale seems to work.  X does not.

What are others seeing?

What are you all using?

Is there a combination of SDL and MaxMAME/xmame.SDL that works well?

What are your settings?

IMHO QWS is the bottleneck.  Are others with Advmame on pdaXrom getting good performance?

Thanks.
