Novell do seem to be throwing a lot of resources into linux, which is good, I can\'t wait for a fully integrated eDirectory, no more nasty NIS

Accessories / ShirtPocket Battery Extender Sharp Zaurus 5500/5600....
« on: April 02, 2004, 09:31:47 am »
Just thought I would give my thoughts on the battery extender from shirtpocket.  For aound 8gbp (batteries not included  I doubled my battery life for my 5600 and no need to worry about \"flipflopping\" and other scary tales from people who build their own battery packs.
Only problem is the cable is so short, it\'s really hard to use on the move or even at your desk since its about 25 cm long.  I got around this problem by making myself a battery extender holder out of velcro and black elastic, prbly used to make tracksuit bottoms for very fat people (which i strapped to my wrist, and since i wear a jacket no one can see it), also i\'m of to my local maplins to see if i can get a cable extender

All in all im very happy with it

Accessories / Pretec CompactBT (BT2000E)
« on: April 01, 2004, 05:56:34 am »
Small tip, install the bluez drivers, then the high speed drives

Add this to /etc/pcmcia/bluetooth.conf

card \"Pretec BT2000E Bluetooth Card\"
  version \"Pretec\", \"BT2000E\"
  bind \"bt950_cs\"

No need to edit the uart file!

Follow tumnus\' instructions to edit the /etc/bluetooth/ files

Restart pcmcia and bluetooth and it should work fine!

PS Thanks for the drivers and instructions guys!

Sharp ROMs / Moving directories to external storage
« on: March 27, 2004, 10:54:29 am »
Can anyone point me to info on what directories I can easily move from my internal memory to a sd card on the Sharp 1.32 ROM please.  (Looked on the wbe and everything seems to be aimed at OZ)

Me thinks the reg writer hasnt done their research, why carry a laptop with wifi in a backpack to have a mobile website, when it can be done with a z in a pocket, and im sure the z has a better battery life then a laptop

Accessories / Bluetake BT100S Bluetooth CF from www.scan.co.uk
« on: March 18, 2004, 05:06:59 am »
I couldn\'t find much info about other people experiences with this card so I thought I would post mine...
This is with regards to a 5600 with the sharp 1.32 rom

Card sticks out a cm and a bit from the top of, so those with cases beware.  Its also quite thin, so there is a gap but it does fit snuggly.

Installation went well by following tumnus\'s bt guide, I needed the bluez and the csr_serial ipks.
Also I needed to get the product info with
cardctl ident:
and add it to the uart file in /etc/bluetooth (examples of this for the Socket card can be found on this forum)

Following the rest of the howto I got my 5600 paired with my phone a bt dial up using the applet from
http://my-zaurus.narod.ru/header.html

I couldnt get the pan applet to quite work, but following another guide which is refered to in the howto, I also got a pan between my pc and my z in no time.

The only problem is this card suffers from the suspend problem, where it hangs after u suspend it.

The susp-resume scripts didnt fix the problem, I found that I could get the card to start after a suspend by having a script to stop bluetooth and do a cardctrl eject, but it seem to loose it\'s pairing information...

Anyway I\'ve sent the card back because for another 20 pounds I\'m getting a pretec.  I really don\'t want to have to reboot my z or pull the card each time i want to bt...

Accessories / Expansys Black Chairmans Case for SL5500
« on: March 18, 2004, 04:30:40 am »
It\'s a nice case, but expensive.  Unfortuantly it\'s not really compatiable with the 5600 as their site claims.  A bit of common sense on my part should have warned me, as the 1700 battery sticking out of its back kinda makes it bigger.

A bit of brute force and some snipping and some leather paint and it fits.

Also I needed to expand the hole in the top to allow me to open and close the front cover when my bluetake bt card is inserted.

I have just got a bluetake bt card, followed tumnus\'s howto and all is well, apart from i suffered from the suspend problem.  I install the 3 files to fix the problem, but all that did was when i try to suspend my z flips to the login screen.

What i found was that u could not eject the cf card if the bluetooth daemon was running.  So if i stop bluetooth and then eject the cf card i can then suspend and when i resume the bluetooth card is fine and i can use it dandy!

Where would i put in the cmds so i can automatically stop the bt daelon and eject the cf card when i suspend pls? and what is the cmd to eject the cf card?

Security and Networking / BT PAN Applet
« on: March 16, 2004, 04:48:39 pm »
I can connect using Jens scripts from
http://www.jens-koenen.de/index.html

I\'m trying to get the PAN applet to work, but it keeps disconnecting as soon as its conencted.  A message pops up saying \"No connection detected Check your TCP/IP settings\"
The pan log shows

***

Starting PAN...
modprobe bnep
success!
pand --role PANU --service NAP --connect XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX --nodetach
success!
ifconfig bnep0 192.168.1.201 netmask 255.255.255.0
success!
route add default gw 192.168.1.1
success!
cp -f /etc/resolv.conf /etc/resolv.conf.pan
success!
Adding DNS entries...
nameserver 192.168.1.1
success!
Stopping PAN...
pand -K
success!
mv -f /etc/resolv.conf.pan /etc/resolv.conf
success!

I notice it stopping the PAN!

Any ideas pls?

Linux Issues / chown root.wheel then chmod 600 - WHY???
« on: March 15, 2004, 12:25:07 pm »
Don\'t now if I should be posting this here, but i\'ve been on linux irc chans, trawled google and could\'nt find an answer.
The question is, lots of linux security howtos and apps say to set ownership of certain files to root.wheel and then chmod it to 600.  So why set the group to wheel if u are going to set its permissions to 0?
I\'ve always done this, but I want to know why
An example is logcheck\'s install doc says to do this to /var/log/messages

Cheers
Moon
PS before anyone says u set the permissions to 600 so that no one but root can access the file, I know that part! Its setting group to wheel and then giving it no rights that puzzles me
Only thing i can think of is some legacy good practice or some pam module would need it, but if it did should wheel be already set!
