Zaurus - pdaXrom / Working Xchat, Anyone?
« on: November 09, 2005, 02:41:33 pm »
The xchat 2.4.5 in the feed is somewhat dysfunctional. It can connect to a server, but basically eveything else incoming is labeled GARBAGE. Does anyone have a working copy?

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Xmms Keeps On Hanging In Rc11...
« on: September 29, 2005, 12:52:42 pm »
The xmms still keeps hanging in rc11, despite using the "disable suspend" option. I flashed rc11 yesterday and today my Zaurus froze totally while biking to work and listening to music. In addition to the "disable suspend", I had also unwisely selected the "blank screen" option, so when I lost all sound, my Zaurus was both showing blank screen and was totally unresponsive to all keypresses. So I had no practical way to see what was going on or even if my Zaurus was alive or not. Any hints I could do apart from rebooting by removing the battery?

I'm really   about this. I really don't care about various kernel tweaks but I'd really like to have applications that actually work in quite typical usage scenarios.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Kopi Froze Pdaxrom
« on: January 31, 2005, 03:12:59 pm »
Today I messed around with kopi synch and made a mistake in the ssh configuration.
Unfortunately I realized this AFTER I selected the synchronize command. The problem was that almost the whole zaurus froze because of the faulty ssh config. Kopi froze, of course, but so did busybox (i.e. applets were unresponsive, window controls did not work, keyboard shortcuts had no effect). The only observed functionality was the mouse cursor, which moved as instructed. Ah, yes, the suspend button also worked. Unfortunately I had not written down my dynamic IP address, so I could not ssh into it and kill kopi or ssh or whatever.

The only way out of it was the classic battery removal. And hence two questions:

a) This is supposed to be Linux, one application really should not freeze the whole system! Could someone explain what happened and why the whole thing froze?

b) How to gracefully recover from this?

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Backup Hints?
« on: January 24, 2005, 11:55:42 am »
Last Friday I finally took the plunge and switched from Cacko to pdaXrom. So far I have  pretty much transferred everything I needed, although going from SafeDee to portabase was painful.

Anyway, my main concern now is backup. I'm planning to use unison, but I'd like some input on what folders I should be backuping. /home/root, sure, but it contains only a minor part of the actual tweaked system. Then again, I really am not planning to dump the whole /, since a new ROM version would render that pretty much unusable.

Hints, anyone?

User Request for Applications / klines / zlines anywhere?
« on: May 12, 2004, 02:42:38 pm »
Since I had to switch my desktop from Gnome to KDE,
I have discovered the joys of klines... 8)

But where\'s the zaurus port? There are one or two
klines/zlines ipks\'s out there but they don\'t work.
Any hints?

Software / Experiences running wiki on Zaurii
« on: April 16, 2004, 03:50:32 pm »
We have been experimenting with different SW combinations for getting
a personal Wiki running on our family Zaurii (my C760, my husband\'s SL-5500). My need was also to find a Wiki that I could run both in my
Zaurus and also on a group server and the just sync the data with
unison.

Here are the various server/wiki combinations we tried:

- thttpd & AwkiAwki: small, fast.
Beware of thttpd with a broken POST.
- boa & AwkiAwki: needs tweaks to work
Boa runs CGIs from the boa config directory etc.
- thttpd and QuickiWiki: works, fast
Needs perl. My husband liked this.
- Apache+PHP and PhpWiki: works OK
From the performance point of view,
PhpWiki 1.2.2 is much faster than 1.3.7.
The latter version has much more functionality,
  though. BTW, 1.2.2 requires
  \"php_flag register_globals on\" in httpd.conf.
- Apache+PHP and MoinMoin: works, slow.
MoinMoin uses Python and loads of
python modules, so you have to install
half a dozen or so python packages to
  get all the necessary stuff.
- boa and MoinMoin: Works, still slow.
Front page takes about 7 seconds.
The problem is the python execution,
  not the web server speed/size.
- perl + Zwiki: works, fast.
Zaurus Wiki, not Zwiki as in Zope
Wiki. Only text content, no pictures.

Other options that we did not try:
 - Zope
 - http://digit.que.ne.jp/visit/file/WalWiki2...wal.4.3_arm.ipk

Summary:

If you want just a small fast personal wiki easily and don\'t care
about pictures or major functionality, do the Zwiki.

If you want real functionality or to run the same SW in Zaurus
and in a real server somewhere, I\'d suggest PhpWiki. On my
760 the first phpWiki Home Page execution takes about 3.5
seconds measured from the phpWiki debug mode display. It gets
down to 2.5secs afterwards. I\'m running phpWiki 1.3.7.

QuickiWiki is a good compromise between those two approaches.
In a 5500 home page load times are about 4 seconds when
outswapped, and it gets to 1-2 seconds afterwards.

Any other experiences?

I just installed the pre-emptive + wireless kernel (no overclk)
from the ZUG downloads area to my 760. All went fine but
I can\'t get kismet to work with my Symbol WiFi card.
I \'ve got both the kismet 3.1.0 and the older kismet_qt
ipks installed.

- lsmod shows the spectrum_cs/orinoco/hermes modules present.
- iwconfig shows the Symbol card in eth1
- if I do \"kismet -corinoco,eth1,orinocosource\"
I get a complaint that kismet cannot find monitor mode.
- It\'s true, iwpriv eth1 does NOT mention monitor mode.

How come? I thought this kernel was supposed to have
the wireless monitor mode stuff included?
