I'm going to try and get my C860 repaired once and for all, even at cost, but I need to find some way of getting in touch with support at Sharp Japan, or another company that can undertake the work. Anyone got any ideas?

General Discussion / C860 not charging/warranty-need to contact Sharp
« on: October 27, 2004, 05:32:59 pm »
Hi there, I bought a C860 from a ZUG member. I love the unit but it turned out to have the charging problem, and as such is next to useless for what I need it for. Now it seems I have been left high and dry by the seller, so I need to contact Sharp Japan in order to find out what my options are to get it repaired. Does anyone have any email contact addresses for Sharp Japan that will accept and respond to an English email?

I have the Sharp Warranty cand, but unfortunately no idea who the original vendor was.....

General Discussion / C860 won't charge batteries
« on: July 14, 2004, 06:09:44 pm »
I think I have a problem- my C860 was bought secondhand but doesn't seem to charge the battery (I have three batteries so I don't think it's the battery!).

I only noticed on the train last night when I pulled out the Z to read an ebook (Linux for dummies  ) and the battery only lasted five minutes before the Z told me it needed charging. this was odd because the Z had been on a power supply (a sharp one) all day....

I have tried the Z with the power supply it came with (5V 2A), another Sharp PSU from a minidisc player (5V 800mA) and a USB sync/charge cable. I checked the output of the two sharp PSUs and they are both outputting 5.2V. The charge light comes on solid and the GUI says it's charging but when I remove the power the battery charge drops down to where it was before. I've tried charging the unit with the PDA turned off too, same result. I have a sharp desktop battery charger so I can still use the Z, but swapping batteries out in the field is a bit of a PITA.

I did a search and Stubear seems to have had this problem before, but I don't think anyone knew exactly what the issue was.....

Anyone got any ideas? Do I have a faulty Z?

Sharp ROMs / Cacko 1.21B- should I be able to play video?
« on: July 13, 2004, 12:15:23 pm »
As the title says: I have a C860 with Cacko hotfix B and neither Kino2 or XMMS as installed by default seem to be able to play any videos (I've tried various .wmv, xvid and divx files). Kino's play button depresses then just pops back off again. XMMS sits there for 30 seconds or so then just says it's unable to play...

Do I need to install mplayer, codecs or something behind the scenes to get them working?

Software / OpenTTD problem, "assertation 0 failed"
« on: July 10, 2004, 08:31:40 am »
Hi, I've just received my C860 (and am awed by it!) and am using the latest Cacko ROM hotfix "B". I'm really keen on playing OpenTTD after all the hours I used to sink into it on the PC!

I've got openttd installed, using libsdl1.2.6-zports, libpng12 v1.2.5-10 and the data files installed on an SD card. When I try and run ttd via QT the icon explodes but then disappears and nothing happens. When invoking it via the console I get :

ttd: ttd.c:69: error: Assertation "0" failed

I've tried several versions of SDL with no luck.... I'm abit out of my depth here- any ideas?

General Discussion / Lotus Notes and Zaurus- I have achieved Nirvana
« on: July 02, 2004, 04:41:47 pm »
At long last I've managed to sync my 5600 with Notes.....

As mentioned by another ZUG member, Intellisync for Palm 5.00.02 has a connector for Notes 5 and reported success using a combination of that and the latest 5600 Zaurus sync software (which uses a rebadged version of Intellisync).

The procedure is simple- uninstall Zaurus software and any other versions of intellisync. No need to clear the registry. Simply install Intellisync 5.00.02, install the Z software (choose Intellisync and not Qtopia Desktop), reboot and voila- in the Z sync options you should have connectors for Notes 4 and 5.

You may be able to retrofit the Notes conector DLLs into an existing Zaurus installation but I didn't try that.

Incidentally if you are using Notes 6.x, you can install a 5.x Notes client on your PC alongside the 6.x client. Configure it as normal and Intellisync will be able to hook into it to access your mailbox/calendar. The 5.x client loses some calendar functionality when accessing a 6.x mailbox, but nothing that should get in the way of syncing entries.

I did get an error message about API initialisation at the end of the sync process, but everything was synced sucessfully afterwards.

It might seem a simple thing, but now I feel my 5600 is an actual PIM rather than just a funky linux device. Happiness!

For Sale / Wanted / Possible sale: 5600 in the UK
« on: June 28, 2004, 07:02:11 pm »
I'm thinking of selling my 5600 (PXA250) to fund the acquisition of an 860....

Comes in the original packaging with all accessories except the flip down screen cover.

Fitted with a Brando reusable screen protector.

Will include a 128Mb CF card (Sandisk- not had any problems with this in the Zaurus)

Make me an offer otherwise it goes in Ebay!

Software / Anyone got Exult working on the 5600?
« on: May 03, 2004, 10:36:46 am »
I installed it on mine (Rom1.32), and Exult started OK but gave an error saying it could not find the data files. Fair enough, so I went through the instructions on the exult documentation page for use on the 5600. I had to change the chown commands to

chown zaurus homeetc etc

instead of

chown zaurus:zaurus homeetc etc

But the \"sed\" command could not find the exult.cfg file (I can\'t find it anywhere on the zaurus).

Now Exult won\'t start from the icon, the hourglass just disappears. If I try running exult from the terminal I get something like

exult:configuration.cc:130: bool Configuration ::read:read_config_string(const string &): Assertation \'s[nn]==\'<\'\' failed

If I try as root I get

Qt/Embedded data directory is not owned by user 0
Aborted

Now even if I uninstall and reinstall exult I get the same thing (it never starts and gives me the \"cannot find data files error\", which at least showed Exult was running!

I\'m muddling my way through as a linux newbie as best I can, but I\'m a  bit stumped!

Is there any way of resetting a Zaurus right back to \"as it came from the factory\" defaults, software and everything?

I\'ve only had my 5600 (PXA 250) for a couple of days, but one of the first things I did was install the 1.02 and then 1.03 special kernel (with no overclocking). So far I\'ve not had a good experience- random hangs doing things as trivial as moving the cursor, freezes when placing the Zaurus in the cradle, various hangs when starting applications, and a few times the unit has shut itself down for no reason. Each instance required a hard reset. I\'ve put the standard kernel back on a few hours ago, and so far haven\'t had any more freezs, although the decreasing in speed and responsiveness is very noticeable.

Is this a common experience with the special kernel, or are there 5600 users getting \"true\" stability?

Also, looking at the notes on the download page for the special kernel, it implies that the Pre-emptiveness of the special kernel provides a speed increase (\"almost doubles the responsiveness of the 5600\"), while the PXA cache workaround \"gives a small speed increase\". Is this really the case? If so, would a pre-emptive kernel without the PXA workaround give a significant speed boost without the instability?

My 5600 should be here on Friday, and I am looking to buy some storage for it. I have some CF memory already, but I will also be needing wireless capability which means the CF slot will be used up and the extra storage will have to be SD.

I want at least 512Mb, mainly for storing MP3s, but the whole Zaurus/SD thing seems a bit of a minefield, so I\'m hoping for some guidance. I\'ve searched the forums to death but can\'t seem to find a real consensus on what works and what doesn\'t.

Are the Zaurus/SD problems mainly limited to the 5500, or is the 5600 equally prone?

Are there any users who have used 512Mb SD cards with no transfer/suspend problems, and sufficient memory bandwidth to play MP3s and run the odd application from SD? If so, what brands of SD are you using?

I have about £100 to spend on a 512 SD card, which puts me in the market for Sandisk Ultra2 cards, PNY, Viking and PQI. Has anyone used any of these cards without problems?

Sandisk seem to have problems relating to poor SD controllers- are these symptoms likely to carry over to the new UltraII cards? I know the Zaurus will not make use of the extra speed, but I will transfer MP3s daily to the card using a USB2 reader attached to my PC, so the extra speed would be useful, but Zaurus compatibility is most important....

Any suggestions, ideas or experiences would be most welcome,

Ithankyou
Corin.

UK / 5600 Screen/Flip Cover
« on: April 28, 2004, 08:27:18 am »
Greetings. I\'m waiting for my 5600 to arrive from the US on Friday (My boss shuttles between our UK and New York offices and is bringing it back for me). Mine is secondhand and doesn\'t have a the flip screen cover- Not sure if this is a big issue as I intend on getting a slip case for it anyway, but I\'m just wondering if there\'s somewhere in the UK that can source me a replacement cover. Any ideas?

Cheers,
Corin.
