Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Sd Card Very Slow Oz 3.5.4.1
« on: January 19, 2007, 01:37:48 pm »
I finally found the time today to install OZ 3.5.4.1 (GPE) on my C750. I am very impressed with the result. It is evident that a lot of work has been put in this version.

I have however a problem that renders my installation almost unusable.
My SD card, a Toshiba 512 MB, is extremely slow: read speed is around  300 KB/sec and write speed is around 20 KB/sec. The card was working perfectly on older versions of OZ (and pdaxrom).
The card has one partition with the ext2 fs. I tried recreating the partition and the filesystem but I didn't see any improvement.

The card seems to be working (tested in a cardreader and also I don't see any relevant messages in dmesg output). Is there a way to improve its speed in OZ?

Security and Networking / Strange Problem Using Gprs Phone Over Infrared
« on: December 11, 2005, 04:37:29 pm »
Hello everybody

I recently purchased a phone (sharp GX17) having an infrared port and GPRS capability. I can use it as a modem (through infrared) in WindowsXP to connect to the Internet without problems.

However, I get strange behaviour when I try to use it with my C750 (with pdaxrom).
I have set-up ppp correctly (using instructions from this forum and from other sites).
(I attached below the related files).

The problem is this:

- If I switch on my mobile and try to use it with the zaurus (calling pppd from the commandline), pppd first reports
Code: [Select]
Serial connection established.
Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ircomm0

but then disconnects with:
Code: [Select]
LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests(this happens after sending a series of
Code: [Select]
sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1 ]and receiving nothing)

It 's frustrating, because if I issue the commands that are used in the chat-script by hand through minicom, I get the familiar stream of "garbage-like" characters that is ppp traffic.

- If i use the phone with windows, and then try to use it with the zaurus, ppp *works* perfectly!
(and it works again and again as long as I don't switch the mobile off).

I examined the modem log from the windows box and I use the same commands in my chat-script,
but with no luck. I cannot understand what may be the problem (some strange setting in the windows driver? a flow-control problem?...)

This is the modem log from windows:

I have tried variations that I found on the net but the result is the same. In any case the scripts must be good, because ppp works (although as I said earlier only after using the phone once with my windows laptop).

Any ideas on what may the problem be?

I would be grateful for any answers/pointers (it's driving me crazy!).

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Stellarium For Rc11
« on: October 05, 2005, 04:21:03 pm »
Hello everybody

I've posted this problem already on another thread, but I think it was probably the wrong one
(and it was too old) so I post again.

I tried to compile Stellarium, an application that needs opengl and sdl.
I used the cross-compiling sdk for rc11 and the program compiled fine.

However, when I try to run it on the my C750 I get the message:

sdl: Couldn't set 640x480 video mode (X11 driver not configured with OpenGL), retrying with stencil size 0
sdl: Couldn't set 640x480 video mode: X11 driver not configured with OpenGL!

(the message is the same for resolution 320x240).

glxinfo however reports that openGL is enabled and glxgears runs (although at a mere 17 fps).
I have also the "mesa3d" package installed.

You can find the ipk I made at stellarium_0.7.1_armv5tel.ipk if you want to have a try at it (it is a little heavy, 16MB, i didn't strip the constellation art and stuff...)

I would be really grateful for any help. Stellarium is a really cool "desktop planetarium" app, with a very beautiful rendition of the night sky (as seen from any point on earth).

Thanks for any pointers,
-grigoris

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Offlineimap Package
« on: June 28, 2005, 01:16:37 pm »
Hello

Is there a package for offlineimap? It is not in the feeds but maybe someone has managed to use it under pdaxrom. For those who don't know, offlineimap [1] is a tool for synchronizing local email folders ("Maildir") with an IMAP server. It is great for reading mail offline with mutt.
If offlineimap is not possible do you know of any other such tool that is available under pdaXrom?

Thanks.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Oz 3.5.3 (gpe) Internationalization
« on: April 26, 2005, 04:04:30 pm »
Hello everybody

I would like to be able to read / write texts in greek (and also french/german) while using rxvt.
Is there a document describing the necessary steps to accomplish this?
E.g., installing fonts, changing locale settings, installing an applet for changing the keyboard layout etc.
(the bitstream vera fonts included with OZ include greek glyphs but still greek characters show up in rxvt as question marks).
I am using OZ 3.5.3 / GPE.

I would be grateful for any pointers.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Ppp On Oz 3.5.3 / Gpe
« on: April 26, 2005, 01:10:57 pm »
Hello everybody

Is there a GUI program for configuring PPP/dial-up on OpenZaurus 3.5.3 / GPE? I have a Targus CF modem that I would like to use for dial-up. The modem is recognised (shows up on the PC/CF Cards settings dialog) but on the "Network setup" dialog there is no ppp0 or similar interface to set-up.

I searched the forum for help but I didn't find any previous posts about this. Do I have to set it manually somehow?

Thank you for your time.

Open Embedded / Installing Python + Offlineimap
« on: April 26, 2005, 01:02:56 pm »
Hello everybody

I tried earlier today to install offlineimap (a very nice program for synchronizing mail with an IMAP server). Offlineimap is written in python so, "ipkg" brought in python-core as a dependency. However offlineimap needed more python modules. Some of them were in the feed, some were not. I found the missing modules on my linux box, copied them over and now offlineimap works nicely. Regarding this, I have three remarks:

- offlineimap complained about not finding modules "traceback" and "linecache" (and maybe 1-2 more which I don't remember now). I have OE/bitbake (latest versions) installed and I see that there is a file "python-2.4.1-manifest.inc" that gets included by python_2.4.1.bb, and has these two modules listed. Why don't they appear in the final python-core package?

- offlineimap after installation had an error in the first line (trying to run something like ..../staging/.../python instead of /usr/bin/python)

- OE contains a .bb file for an older version of offlineimap. I updated the version, fixed the dependencies and produced a working .ipk. What is the proper way to contribute it to the OE/bitbake team? (And, in general what is the proper way to contribute small fixes?)

Thanks for your time.

Accessories / A-DATA cards

Does anybody have any experience with the "A-DATA" CF and SD cards? They are very cheap
($100 for 1GB) but are they reliable?

Deals and Great Z Buys / Panasonic SD 256MB
« on: September 09, 2004, 12:58:58 pm »
Hello

On ebay there is a seller named tech_google offering Panasonic SD 256MB cards at 24.99$ plus 19.99$ shipping (worldwide). It seems to me like a good price (especially since it is a Panasonic card).
I just bought one, I 'll have more info when I receive it.

General Discussion / Expansion option overlooked...
« on: September 08, 2004, 11:13:49 am »
Hello

It seems to me that we have overlooked an expansion option of our Zaurii, namely the sharp port.
Since this is (?) basically a serial interface it should be possible to attach some peripherals to it.
I know that GPS units (and other serial devices) can be attached via ZThinCable but couldn't we do
better than that? E.g., attach a card reader (or sth that can hold extra storage).

Any ideas?

General Discussion / Debian on C750 Considerations
« on: September 08, 2004, 10:06:18 am »
Hello people

I am thinking of setting up Debian on my C750 according to the instructions found at
Sharp Zaurus C700 Debian-Qtopia
and at
Generic Template.

My considerations:
1. I have a Lexar 256MB SD card and a 512MB Microdrive. The Lexar card sometimes (very rarely) "acts up"
by turning read-only when I try to copy large files (this common problem many of you are having - remounting fixes it). I am afraid that maybe I 'll "worsen" the situation if I try to format it as ext2. So, I was thinking, where is the best place to put Debian? SD or Microdrive? Pros and cons?

2. A more philosophical question ;-) . Since this system (from www.pocketworkstation.org) appears to be a reasonably complete Debian system, what 's stopping the community from repackaging it as an independent
ROM without the Sharp/Qtopia stuff?

General Discussion / Advice on purchase
« on: May 12, 2004, 03:41:35 pm »
Hello everybody

For the last month I have been doing some painstaking research (incuding reading this forum carefully!) on buying a PDA. After the first few days of research I concluded that it has to be one of either SL-5500 (from ebay) or C700 (from conics.net?). My budget is very tight and the C700 is the limit of what I can afford.

I want the PDA mainly for reading electronic documents (I have lots of them waiting to be read, most of them are papers in PS or PDF) and secondary as a \"tiny laptop\" that would allow me to do some basic work (like write some code in vi, reply to e-mail etc.). (I would like also to use it with a GPS receiver for navigation but that\'s not so important). I do not care at all for \"normal\" PDA functions. (I should note also that I am a quite experienced Linux user).

I know of course that the C700 has a very nice 640x480 screen and a good keyboard, but my question is if these improved features will actually allow me to do something \"more\" with the machine. I mean will it be \"really better\" to read documents on the C700, or will it be really easier to write things on it (considering that the better keyboard may not be needed after all since both have handwriting recognition)? In general would I be able to do things \"better\" on the C700 or not?

My main concerns for the C700 are that it is imported and that it is more expensive :-(.
If the C700 is not offering significantly more functionality than the 5500 then maybe it is more prudent to buy a 5500.

I am very interested in the opinions of people that own zaurii of both designs. I would be very grateful for any advice.
