For Sale / Wanted / Fs: Zaurus Sl-c860 And Accessories
« on: September 05, 2007, 07:43:02 pm »
On further consideration, with my new work schedule and software, i don't use my Z enough to justify keeping it -- so i am adding it to this sales thread:

Item #1: Zaurus SL-c860
A functional Zaurus that has seen use (there are scuffs on the case & etc.).  It has the most recent Cacko lite ROM installed, and will include all of the accessories below, plus the original extended battery (EA-BL08), charger, data cord and packaging.  Also included will be a P to Go (Power to go) compact "zip-cord" data cable, a 128MB CF card, and a 128MB higher-speed SM card.  I haven't seen the small battery cover since I bought it (ie it didn't come with one).  If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Asking $225 for the lot + shipping

--Accessories--

I have some accessories for my SL-C860 Zaurus that i don't use anymore.  As they will be more useful elsewhere than sitting on my shelf, i am offering them here.  I have listed asking prices generally far below the list prices (some are available here, still) -- any offer is welcome, but I reserve the right to decide which i will accept.  Shipping will be $3 per person, so if you buy out the lot it will just cost you $3.  Original packaging and manuals will be included when available. Everything is in working order.

The first is the Zaurus Voice recorder Kit, CE-VK1 [img]http://conics.net/shp/pda/zaurus-sl-c700/images/ce-vk1.gif\" border=\"0\" class=\"linked-image\" /] (Conics.net website)
It is a microphone that plugs into the headphone jack and lets you make voice recordings on your Zaurus.

Asking $15

The second is the Zaurus Remote,  CE-RH1 [img]http://homepage2.nifty.com/hamachi/zaurus/img/CE-RH1.jpg\" border=\"0\" class=\"linked-image\" /] (random page from google)
This is a very handy in-line control that works with most Zaurus media players (i used it with Kino) to allow you to control the playback while the Zaurus remains closed in your pocket or bag.  Any set of earphones with a 2.5 mm stereo jack can be plugged into the control.  The one originally included may or may not be included if i can find it, but it wasn't particularly memorable, anyway.

Asking $25

Next up is a large and small battery (EA-BL06 and EA-BL08) for the Z, purchased from laptopsforless.  These are both marked '2004' and have been cycled at most 5 times each.

Asking $15 for the set

Sharp Zaurus AC adapter/charger.  I have two and only need one, so...

Asking $15

A leather case with snap.  Much like the one offered at the page linked at the top.  I can't recall where this came from originally, but it holds a spare stylus and memo pad, and has room for a few cards.

Asking $10

Last, but not least, a Pretec Compact WLAN CF wifi adapter.  It works great with the c860.

Asking $15

Thanks for your attention and here's to geek goodies.

For Sale / Wanted / Wanted: Small Battery Cover For C860
« on: February 26, 2005, 05:17:35 pm »
I acquired my Z used, and it doesn't have a small battery cover.  I recently bought a small battery for times when i want my Z to fit better in my shirt pocket, and now i can't use it because there is no cover.

If you have a bricked c860 or never use your small battery cover, please contact me.  I'm willing to pay a few bucks.

If anyone has any ideas how else i could get one, please let me know.

Software / Houdini Applets
« on: February 05, 2005, 04:50:38 pm »
I uninstalled the alarmclock program from my Cacko 1.22-based c860, and now there is no time applet, and no network applet.  I imagine this is a matter of fixing a symbolic link that the alarmclock overwrote, but i have no idea what it might be.

How do i get back the little time display?

Cxx0 Hardware / Small Battery Cover
« on: February 04, 2005, 11:52:24 am »
I just picked up an extra large and also a small battery from a place mentioned in Deals, for what seemed like a pretty good price.  I got my Z used and now i realize that the small battery does need a cover (i had thought that it simply filled up the compartment and acted as an integral part), yet i don't have one.  Does a small cover come with the c860?  If not, is there any way to get one?

I like the capacity of the large battery, of course, but sometimes it would be nice to make the Z a bit more svelte when it's riding in a shirtpocket.

Software / Exasperation
« on: February 01, 2005, 09:15:35 pm »
Okay, i've had my Palm Tungsten T3 kicking around since i got my Z c860 last summer, waiting to have the data all successfully transferred so i can get rid of it.  I have made several tries along those lines, but each time get discouraged and give up.

The problem is (or has been) that there is no way to go from Palm to Z without having Microsoft Outlook!  That's ridiculous!  At least, i can't see that there is.

Here's a brief listing of the dead ends:
-Tried to set up the Palm to sync (once) in linux, to get the data into Kontact.  Didn't want to figure out all the Palm/USB/kernel rebuild mess just to get the data transferred once.  Pursued other options
-Downloaded and installed QTopia Desktop.  Successfully imported the Palm data.  Then realized that nothing on the Z is compatible with the current Qtopia Desktop that is capable of all those cool imports, and that it can't export anything.
-Installed KO/Pi and KA/Pi in Windows, and promptly crashed it trying to import from Qtopia Desktop (see above).  Transferred addresses using VCF exported data from Palm Desktop, re-categorizing each contact after it was transferred.  This was after trying to beam contacts, which didn't seem to work at all (does beaming work on Cacko?)

Yay!  Halfway there!

-Realized there was just no easy way to transfer the calendar data without access to
Outlook, so i brought it home from work to install on my virus-ridden W2K partition long enough to sync and transfer.  Installation dies at 88%.  Outlook runs anyway, and i sync my Palm.  Outlook has the Calendar data!
-Windows KO/Pi Import OL menu option shows only Calendar data to import, no todo/tasks.  Calendar data is succesfully imported into KO/Pi!  The character set is screwed up though in the Palm->OL sync.  I'm not sure how i prevent that.

So.  Perhaps i should have just bitten the bullet and rebuilt my kernel, installed kPilot and all those other things to get the Palm to sync in linux, and then transferred the data that way.  I still don't like the sound of that.

But... i can't seem to get the tasks/todos from Outlook into KO/Pi.  It has that folder greyed out when importing/syncing.  What gives?

Anyway.  I really like KO/Pi and KA/Pi.  A bit large on the memory footprint, but very nice.  I just wish i could FINALLY get all my Palm data synced into the Z and dump the Palm.  It SHOULDN'T be this hard to migrate from Palm.  Really.

Maybe i missed an easy solution?

Software / Cad/drafting Software, Lite
« on: January 27, 2005, 07:07:44 pm »
Hi, i remember having a trial version of a simple CAD drafting program on my Palm T3 for a bit (before i got rid of the T3 and got a Z).  It was called ZipCAD, i think.  It was cool.

Is there anything that will run on the Z that will let you draw in a semi-exact way.  I just want to design some gadgets and need to be able to make angles and lines of specific lengths.

Just hoping.

Software / Opie Reader Problems After Cacko Upgrade
« on: January 03, 2005, 04:08:13 pm »
I was using Opie Reader with great success and much satisfaction for plucked scriptures and other ebooks on cacko 2.21 on my c860.  It was great- a completely painless transition from a Palm T3, even using the same data files!  After updating to cacko 2.22 i tried installing reader 0.7h directly from the developer's page.  It opened up rotated, so i uninstalled it and installed the package from the cacko feeds.  This one (it says 0.6j) opened up with the correct rotation, but i'm having troubles now with the same plucker file i was using before.  I can't get it to display footnotes properly, and all the inbuilt fonts i was using previously are not displaying the same size as before.  Finally, and most importantly, scrolling is dog slow.

I didn't install Opie Reader previously because i bought the Z used, so i don't know what version it was using (i think package manager said 1.0.3 or something rather unlikely like that), but it says on the developer page that rotation is broken in the current version, so i imagine that's why the newest version wouldn't work right for me.

So my question is, is there a newer version that will fix these problems but still work with my c860?

General Discussion / Memory leaks in Opera?
« on: September 17, 2004, 03:46:46 pm »
I primarily use Opera, Mediaplayer, and Opie Reader, and i find that after a few days i start getting warnings in Opera of insufficient memory to load pages.  At that point, even if i close mediaplayer and Opie (with a large document loaded), i can never get the page to load.  It's like the memory is never released.  Any suggestions or comments?

Sharp ROMs / ROM confusion
« on: August 21, 2004, 04:58:18 pm »
If there is a recent thread on this topic, i haven't been able to find it.

I just got my c860 and like the Cacko ROM that the previous owner had installed, but it seems from the change in web page (now just for pdaXrom) and such that this ROM is no longer being worked on.

So... i'm trying to figure out what each of the different ROMs provides, and doesn't.  Is there a list somewhere?  Does this pdaXrom do everything that the newest Cacko mod of the Sharp ROM do, and if not, why has Cacko been abandoned?

In addition to this question, i was wondering if there's a way to go back to the bare ROM eg erase everything added to the basic ROM setup.  There are old PIM categories i don't want from previous owner, plus some flakiness that i think will require a "hard reset" (as i've come to know such an operation).

Thanks for your help and input on this bewildering array of ROM possibilities that former Palm people like me find mind-blowing.

Edit:

To partially answer my own questions, it looks like pdaXrom loses all of the 3rd part apps like Hancom office and Opera, while replacing them with OSS alternatives.  I personally can't see any reason for doing that as i am impressed with Hancom spreadsheet, and like Opera.  I suppose it's just not legally possible to include them in the new ROM?

I believe pdaXrom uses X instead of .... Qtopia, is that what it's called?  While i'm no expert on X, it seems that the screen size we're dealing with is best served by a window manager/widget set customized for palmtops, and X on it might be like the Space Shuttle to the grocery store metaphor.  Does anyone know if there are any advantages to X over Qtopia besides insta-compatibility with lots of existing desktop software?

Cxx0 General discussions / Screen blanking problems
« on: August 21, 2004, 03:50:56 pm »
The other day i was listening to tunes on my zaurus for a while. Then i unplugged the RC/headphones from the Z, but after a few minutes the screen turned off, and i couldn't get it to come back on until i plugged it in, whereupon it magically comes back. This continues to be the case. Does anyone have a solution? thanks

To sum up:

I'm using the Cacko ROM
As long as the Z is plugged in, the screen stays on.
As soon as i unplug it, it will blank.
After a while, it will come back, until i tap the screen or push a button. Then it blanks again for about 30 seconds.
I rebooted, and it still does this.
It's driving me nuts!

It will sit there on until i tap it, and then it skedaddles.

Software / Nitpicks with HancomMobileSheet
« on: August 16, 2004, 02:53:43 pm »
I am pretty impressed with MobileSheet on my new c860, but the size of the column and row labels is a bit absurd on the Z display.  Is there any way to descrease the size of that row and column?

I had a checklist of things i wanted to verify before jumping from PalmOS (Visor Deluxe '99-'02, Handera 330 '02-'03 (stolen!!!), Palm Tungsten T3 '03-now) to Zaurus, as it has been good to me.  Unfortunately i'm just not very pleased with the T3 and PalmOne, and the good things i keep reading about the Cxxx Zauri have pushed me over the edge, so i guess that, sink or swim, i'm coming over.

There were a few things i didn't yet fully get sorted out, though, and i was hoping someone can clarify for me.  The first is how easily the Cxxx can be used one-handed.  While i have avoided thumbboarded PDAs like the plague up until now, i've come to realize that Graffiti as it exists on the T3 is probably not the best solution, so i'm willing to give the keyboard on the C860 a try.  (Hopefully it works for me!).  In particular for long journal entries and programming, Graffiti2 is painfully slow.  There are also times when it would be nice to hold something in one hand and still enter some data in the Z.  Can you operate (eg enter data in) your Cxxx one-handed?

The second is the conversion from PalmOS PIM programs.  I have substantial datebook entries (many with associated notes) going back to Christmas '99 and documenting trips to Europe and other places.  Obviously i don't want to lose these.  The FAQ at OpenZaurus was a bit incomplete and out of date.  What's the present reality of converting from Palm to Zaurus?  Can i pull everything over intact?  If i'm running Linux on my desktop, will i be able to regularly sync and update these once they're over, or will i be limited to network "sync" to copy the entire filesystem (not a bad idea, i guess, just not what i'm used to with Palm.  Do those of you formerly from the PalmOS camp find that Z satisfactorily replaces your datebook?

Finally, one of the draws of the Z for me is the potential of doing development.  Besides bash scripts, is programming on (not necessarily for) the Z a realistic endeavor?  I've seen some mention of python being ported, etc, but... does anyone use these to good effect with the thumbpad as input?

Thanks for your help, and salutations to everyone.
