6000 - Tosa / battery life & flying?
« on: November 21, 2004, 03:58:27 am »
I just took my Z6k on its first cross country trip.

When Ileft the house it was fully charged.
Iused it for about 5 minutes with the wifi hotspot at the JetBlue JFK terminal then performed a complete "shutdown -h now" before boarding.
At that point the battery indicator was still showing a full charge.

I din't use the Z during the flight at all (I watched TV instead).

Upon arriving at my hotel and powering up, the battery indicated that it was "Low"

I've flown with my 5000d with no battery problems, even when I've used it in-flight.
Is there something different about these Lithium Polymer batteries in the 6k that makes them susceptible to altitude?

So far it seems to be recharging and I have managed to peck out this entire message over hotel wifi, so I'm not too concerned, but what if I had wanted to listen to some mp3s on the plane?

6000 - Tosa / USB Mouse?
« on: November 18, 2004, 02:10:07 pm »
I picked up one of the iRiver usb host adapters discussed here
https://www.oesf.org/forums/inde...topic=7922&st=0

It works great, so far.
I've been able to hook up an apple usb keyboard with no issue (except I had to reboot with it plugged in, else the keys weren't mapped properly). Some screwy action from the function keys, but I think it's just a matter of figuring them out.

Now, what we really need is mouse support. I haven't seen anything that accomodates this yet.
Any ideas?
An apple USB mouse is recognized, but there's no pointer (not that I really expected one).

It would really bridge the gap between Z and a laptop.

It looks like it might be possible with X/Qt, or perhaps OZ GPE(?).

6000 - Tosa / Emergency Power Charger
« on: November 15, 2004, 06:12:47 pm »
While looking for other things, I ran across this interesting "Emergency Power Charger"

http://www.xpcgear.com/dc40unempoch.html

If anybody has one, please comment on how well it works (or doesn't work).

Seems a little better than the battery extenders which are on the market as this one claims it can actually charge the battery.

I would have to assume that the 9v charge is dropped down to 5.0v input that the Z expects. But, aren't 9 volt batteries usually low in mAh? I don't know how it would fully charge the 1500mAh slab that is the 6000 battery.

Anyways, I thought it was interesting enough to share, at least.

6000 - Tosa / Old Apps on 6000
« on: November 11, 2004, 02:14:02 pm »
I have found that most apps which are ipkg'ed for the 5x00 series models work just fine on the 6000, and even some apps for C series Zs.

I've noticed that most of those apps don't appear properly if you VNC into your Z (I'm using the beta for 6000). They're only about 1/2 screen height and are doubled left/right.

This can be fixed by tap+hold on the application icon and deselecting "Display with magnified screen" in the following dialog.

And the apps seem to start up more quickly, too. (Probably don't need to go thru the resizing functions).

Thought this might be useful for anyone who likes to VNC into their Z but found the miniturized, doubled viewing unusable (which it is).

General Discussion / unbricking?
« on: September 29, 2004, 03:01:08 pm »
I've read the threads here  (and at other boards) and I can't get any of the proposed solutions to work for me.

I have a sl5000d which I managed to render unbootable/unflashable.

When I try to flash (from either C+D or Diag Menu CF Update) both LEDs get stuck on. I've left it that way for hours.

The only thing I haven't tried is to reformat my CF card (I have to put files onto it from a WindowsPPC device) but I've previously flashed from the same card. OZ worked in the past, and I tried it before attempting OSPACK.

Right now, it's stuck with both LEDs on with OSPACK for ROM 1.02, the oldest I could find.

I can still get the Diag Menu, so I'm not looking at a 100% brick, but it's pretty close.
Also, my Diag Menu used to have 4 pages, now it only has 3.
clicking on "Version" in the bottom right does show the ROM as USA 3.10.

I'm going to pick up a CF card reader/adapter so I can plug the CF directly into a Linux desktop/laptop and reformat, etc, but I can only hope that makes a difference.

During my quest I've read that in the most extreme cases that a Z can be sent back to Sharp and they can use something (starts with a J...??) to revive the unit.
Is there any way for a normal (read: non-Sharp) person to do this? Sure would be nice, wouldn't it?

Thanks for any help and good luck to others who find themselves in a similar predicament.
