New products and alternatives / New Z6000 A-like Umpc
« on: May 31, 2007, 05:54:44 pm »
Raon (the makers of the Vega - an AMD LX800 powered UMPC) have announced a new mini computer that may be interesting to those looking for a Zaurus replacement

The Raon Digital Everrun:
http://umpcportal.com/products/product.php?id=110

A JPG of the released spec sheet.
http://umpcportal.com/gallery/v/raoneverun...ageViewsIndex=1

It reminds me a lot of the SLC 6000.
The Everrun is 173mmx85mmx25mm
The SLC-6000 is 158mmx78mmx23mm (presumably with keyboard closed)

The Everrun uses a 600mhz AMD LX900 (Similar to the Kohjinsha), 512mb ram, 30-60gb HD (with a 6gb SSD option), 800x480 touchscreen, bluetooth, wireless, 6-7 hours battery life, and a promised sub-$1000 (after importing) price tag.

It even has a keyboard - It's a full qwerty thumboard in the same spot as the 6000's hidden keyboard. It seems like a very unusual design, but I think it could work.

I think this is quite interesting. I wish it were a clamshell - now I'm stuck trying to decide between this one and the Fujitsu U series

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Java And Pdaxii13
« on: February 19, 2007, 05:18:29 pm »
I'm trying to run a particular java application on my C3000 running pdaiiX13 v5.2.

Now, I've never dealt much with Java, so I can't tell if I'm being dumb, or it just isn't going to work...

The application is called "KanjiGym Light", and it's a flashcard program that goes with Heisig's "Remembering the Kanji" book.

Trying to run it with "java -j KanjiGymLight-1.1.jar" gives an error:

java.lang.IllegalAccessException: method is not accessible
   at java.lang.reflect.Method.invokeNative(Native Method)
   at java.lang.reflect.Method.infoke(Method.java:372)
   at javavm.java.lang.JarLauncher.main(JarLauncher.java:49)a

Trying it with specifiying classpath gets the same error:

"java -cp /usr/share/classpath/glibj.zip:/usr/share/javavm/classes.zip -j KanjiGymLight-1.1.jar"

Am I doing something wrong? Or is it just not going to work on the Z?

I've attached the .jar file if anyone is enterprising enough to give it a try.

*edit*
It wouldn't let me upload a .jar, so that's really a zip archive. You'll have to unzip it to get the jar file.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Pdaxii13 And Bluetooth Networking
« on: January 19, 2007, 04:44:49 am »
I'm trying to sort out the Great Steaming PileĀ™ that is bluetooth, specifically to get networking up and running.

I'm running pdaXii13 on the my 3000 and I want to be able to network it via bluetooth to another computer. Any computer will do - I've got a Macbook(OSX10.4), Libretto(WinXP), or an IBM(Kubuntu 6.10). The eventual goal is to use the Libretto as a wireless gateway to get the Z on the internet via bluetooth, but for the time being I'll accept getting any IP over BT connection running

There doesn't seem to be much info that I can dig up on this, and it's driving me nuts.

hcitool scan from the Z can see all three computers just fine, but I can't seem to get much past that point.

Anyone done this successfully, or know of a good place to get started?

Thanks!

Software / Text Editor For Pdax With Complex Search?
« on: January 08, 2007, 03:08:11 pm »
I've got a whole bunch of text files from around the web, and they have various symptoms of format nastyness. I've decided to spend my bus ride time sorting them out.

A lot of these files are text files with hard returns every ~80 characters. On a desktop I'd use something like Word to search out double returns and replace them with a marker, then replace all the remaining returns with spaces, then replace the markers with double returns.

On my 3100, I can do that with Textmaker. On my 3000, with pdaXii13, I tried to do that with Abiword - but Abiword's search function doesn't support any special or formatting characters whatsoever - It's basically on the same level as Notepad! I'm getting tired of toting 2 Z's everywhere I go, so I'm hoping to find a solution under pdaXrom.

Anyone have any ideas? I'm trying to prep these files so that I can read them on my Librie ebook reader.

General Discussion / Good Z News For Newton Lovers

They've got an IPK for a 5500. Details are somewhat scarce - the PDF says it runs on Opie, probably X11. And that it isn't an emulator, however that works.

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Cacko3k Feedback
« on: April 10, 2005, 09:57:00 pm »
I'm making a new topic that we can use for feedback on the Cacko3k-alpha roms, just to keep out of the Slackware-guys hair.

I've done a complete reset on my 3k and can't duplicate the crash after starting the wireless connection for the first time. Next step is to re-flash the Z and try again.

The DHCP problem that I had has, embarrassingly, gone away. I can properly DHCP from any device on my network now, including the previously problematic 860. The last time I saw the issue is when I tried the C3000 for the very first time. *sigh*

I've got tomorrow set aside for playing with the 3000 rom, so I'll try and build those 3k friendly packages for Opera, Apache+PHP, and Mysql.

General Discussion / C1000 And C3000, Vs 860
« on: April 03, 2005, 10:27:28 pm »
So, my new C1000 and C3000 have just arrived, fresh off the plane.

First impressions - they feel a lot bigger than my 860. The difference is a couple of mm each way, but they seem bigger. The screens lock at a slightly higher angle than the 860's does. The power button in the front is a definite ergonomic improvement as well - the 860's power button is hidden when you have the screen locked open.  I like the keyboard better - it feels better to type on. It sits in the hand a little differently when thumboarding as well, due to the slightly thicker body. The speaker is a vast improvement - the 860 sounds like a muffled mess in comparison.

Out of the box the internal memory on the C1000 has 53mb of 64mb free. The C3000 has 367mb of 398(!)mb free in the OS partition, and 2.7gb free in the data partition.

The pre-loaded software is almost identical. The 860 and 1000 have the same Kanji Dictionary program. (like the Canon Wordtank, etc that are so popular over there). The 3000 has the new Multi-Media encyclopedia instead. (Although I've get to get it to give a picture or utter a sound.) The 860 and the 3000 have the English/Japanese translator program. The 1000 doesn't - it has something else (literally called "Database"), but I've yet to figure out what that is. The 1000 also has the Subway map program and the Photostorage program. My 1000 also came with the Sharp Mediaplayer V2 instead of V1.

The only oddity appears to be the screen on the 3000 - it is slightly yellower and doesn't have quite as much contrast as the 1000 and the 860. The difference is very slight - you'd never notice if they weren't sitting next to each-other.

The RH2 is also an improvement over the RH1. The RH1 cable has a plasticy type of insulation that gets stiff in cooler weather. The RH2 has a rubber insulation that will deal with my Edmonton winters much better

Appearance-wise the 1000 is the clear winner. The 1000's textured matt-black top and gray keyboard win out over the shiny iPod-white 3000, hands down. The 1000 is a *very* sharp looking unit. (No pun intended) Surprisingly, I don't mind the 3000 as much as I thought I would. The 860's silver on silver approach has always looked a little bland in comparison to it's older siblings (like the black screen on the 750), and that doesn't change here. It looks almost boring in comparison.

The 3000 and 1000 have color-coordinated stylii and CF blanks (grey/white and black/black), which is kind of neat. The SD blanks and the factory port covers look a little out of place in flat gray, as they're surrounded by silver.

I will be swapping the motherboards in the 3000 and 1000 as soon as I've played with them for a bit. The 3000 is going to be my daily use one and it *has* to be the sexy black one

Sharp ROMs / Cacko And Zstyle - Stability?
« on: January 20, 2005, 01:56:35 am »
What I am looking for is a good way to use Cacko 1.22  with the English locale, and still be able to use the Japanese input methods and software (the dictionary and translator being prime examples).

Easy enough save for the fact that, as far as I can tell, Qtopia itself picks the best font for the locale, favoring the Helvetica fonts for English.

The first thing I tried was to delete the Helvetica fonts - Not great because these are some of the best fonts for display, limiting the useful fonts for things like hancom word and qtreader. The font that gets picked seems to be one of the lcfonts from the Japanese support package, but they appear overly thin and hard to read.

The next thing I though of was to "convert" the Japanese support, similar to how the original Sharp rom gets modified. I never tried it, though.

What ended up working was zstyle, once I fixed it to work in Cacko. I'm using 18pt lcfont for Qtopia, which seems to look best, and it leaves the Helvetica fonts available to other software.

What I'm worried about is stability - Has anyone else used zstyle much on a c series zaurus? Some of the random bits I pulled up while looking up the software did mention some stability concerns runnig it on the 5xxx machines.

Sharp ROMs / Where Do I D/l Cacko 1.22?
« on: January 17, 2005, 03:13:13 pm »
I'm looking for a place to download Cacko 1.22.
The link off of www.cacko.biz points back to the old zaurususergroup.com domain, and the new zaurusergroup.org doesn't seem to have a downloads section.
(it has a downloads directory, but you get a permission denied error trying to go to it.)

ELSI points back to ZUG.com, and oesf.org doesn't seem to have a d/l directory or link.

Any suggestions?

Sharp ROMs / 860 Tab Default Background
« on: November 23, 2004, 04:58:54 pm »
I've got an 860 running the default 1.4 Japanese rom, and the tab background is light blue, gradiating to white in the middle. The problem I have with it is closer to the edges it has a stippled/dithered effect, which interferes with the readability of the small fonts. Is there some way to get rid of this without resorting to a background wallpaper of some sort?

Software / 860 + Kino2 v0.3 on Sharp1.4
« on: November 14, 2004, 10:43:06 am »
Is there anything I need other than the Kino2 package from the download section here? Trying to play a video file from the kino2 gui just goes to a white screen and back to the gui. Also happens with mp3 files.

My 860 is running the standard 1.4jp rom.
I ran kino2 from the command line and there were no error messages.
Running mplayer from the command line just got a segmentation fault.

I tried copying the kino2 and mplayer files from the kino2 v0.22 file over, and I can play files with that, but I can't turn on the overlay - it goes back to flashing to full screen and back.

Changing the direct access to framebuffer, double buffering, or full screen options doesn't seem to affect the outcome.

Any ideas?

Cxx0 General discussions / Need a 860 v1.4 Japanese NAND backup
« on: November 04, 2004, 02:25:29 pm »
Hi all,

I've been playing with my new 860, and I messed up a little. Now I need the original 860 Nand backup (Japanese 1.4 Sharp Version), and the only place on the net that seems to host it is conics, and their support page is down.

Is there anybody who has one of these images kicking around?

Thanks!
