Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Cf Card Not Detected

But I was wrong!

The card does work and it is detected in a standard hentges install.

But, I wanted to remove all the software that I do not use. I have no wireless network, no bluetooth, no need for infrared, so I removed loads of stuff including kernel modules, now the CF card is not detected.

When I try to mount from the command line it reports that /dev/hda1 is not a valid block device.

Any thoughts about the module/software that I should reinstall.

Sorry coredump for breaking your fabulous work.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / What Is The Future For Collies And Other Sl-5xxx's

Hi all

Please shoot me down if I am being stupid!

HRW has released 3.5.4.1 but only for clamshells.
OpenZaurus appears to be heading towards kernel 2.6 exclusively.

Does this mean that development on SL-5xxx variants is at an end?
Or will future releases, say 3.6 be available?
Or will the project fork?

I am being curious, as my Collie is now faster, more stable and better equipped than it was when it arrived from Sharp ( A big thank you to all the developers/contributors), and I would like to think that it can be better still.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Is There A List Of All Packages By Priority

I would like to free up a bit of space on /dev/root by unistalling some packages and the re-installing them to SD.

However, I am sure that there are some that cannot be moved, as it would interfere with the workings of OZ.3.5.4

So is there a complete list of packages that is available, and is it marked ESSENTIAL, RECOMMENDED, OPTIONAL

With the understanding that:

ESSENTIAL should not be moved
RECOMMENDED could be moved but will perform better if left alone
OPTIONAL put it on the SD or CF card

If there isn't a list would it be possible to get one started.

I have to start by apologising to coredump, but I have been removing packages from your latest hentges rom, there is just too much for me?

When removing one of them the network no longer comes up, but I don't know which one?

Packages removed are:

about applet
gaim
qpe nmap
keypebble
ftp
Zsafe
Tiny Kate (all of it)
opie eye
formatter
aliens
wellenrieter

Would any of these cause the network to not start.

Hi all

Just wondering.

Can you use a Pretec Compact Camera or the HP Jornada Compact Camera with the Zaurus?

I would like to find out before I part with my not very hard earned pennies, after all curiousity killed the cat, but it didn't make him spend any money first.

Cannot find package irk.
Check the spelling or perhaps run 'ipkg update'

I copied this from another thread, as there was no answer evident.

Has anyone else come across this. The package is in the OPIE feed, but it will not work either from the package manager or from the command line.

I would welcome your suggestions.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / collie and kernel from 3.5.3 upgrades

Just upgraded by downloading the zImage for collie 64-0 version in upgrades.

renamed it and copied it to my cf card, and used the opie image from the 5000/5500 folder.

Flash seemed to go OK but now I have a big red WARNING

You are running the wrong kernel

You are running ` 2.4.18-rmk7-pxa3-embedix- `
I expect ` 2.4.18-rmk7-pxa3-embedix-3.5.3 `

Running this combination is not supported

I will sleep for 1 minute now. Use this chance to reboot the device and flash the proper kernel now!

Any thoughts?

PS I tried reflashing a second time with the same result, now going back to the original 3.5.3 64-0 zImage.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Is 3.5.3 Less Stable Than 3.5.2

I ask this because I have had to reboot my Zaurus probably 10 or 15 times since installing 3.5.3, compared to the 1 or 2 times with 3.5.2.

Each time it is different, sometimes it is package manager, sometimes it just freezes whilst using a program e.g. I was reading a book with gutenbrowser, bookmarked my page, closed the program, and then just a desktop, nothing else worked.

This has happened with more than one program.

Sometimes when I start froot, my favourite game, the center pad doesn't work, the rest works but it will not restart opie to correct the problem, another reset.

Each reset requires /etc/resolv.conf to be modified with a nameserver entry, which appears to be linked to somewhere in /var, I am sure there is a good reason, but would it not just be simpler to leave it as a real file in /etc.

This is only a minor rant, because on the whole 3.5.3 appears faster and well constructed, but somehow less stable.

I am getting the dependency error with the two libraries mentioned in the title.

I have added the machine feed and updated my list, but I am still getting the errors.

Any ideas?

While trying to install mplayer I get a dependency error for libts-0.0-0(>=0.0cvs20041127)

However I cannot find libts in any feeds, 3.5.2 or 3.5.1

Any suggestions

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / User Manager

I noticed that there was a user manager application for opie on OZ 3.5.2, and thought that it would be a good idea to be able to have different user space.

However I cannot find any way to get a user log-in.

Am I being optimistic, or just stupid, wanting to use the Z as a user, rather than root.

I have found a great abandonware site and think that the Z would be the perfect machine to experiment on.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Why Are The Feeds Set Up As They Are?

I have managed to get my SL5500 set up as I like it, but not without problems. Some of these problems are my fault (not looking up the forum first) others I would put down to the feed system.

For example, I use opie and "Abuse" is in the opie feed, but it does not work under opie, the same goes for "gweled".

Why are they in that feed when they don't work with that frontend.

Also some of the packages have names that do not suggest their purpose, this could be fixed by adding a description to the name. For example the feeds could become:

..../feed/opie/games/sokoban - A puzzle game

or

..../feed/gpe/games/abuse - Classic platform game

Would this be possible or would it be better as a database on the website?

Please look at this as a suggestion rather than a criticism.
