Gemini PDA - General Discussion / How robust is a Gemini?
« on: August 08, 2021, 09:39:07 pm »
I am just stumbling across the gemini and like what I see.  I am interested in knowing how long it will last under daily use.  In particular, I have had clam shells in the past and the hinges and/or  screen ribbons often fail.  Is it common for a gemini used daily to last for several years without this kind of failure?

Ubuntu / Back Quote
« on: August 22, 2009, 02:55:22 pm »
I couldn't find a back quote on the keyboard.  So I edited both /etc/keymap.2.6 and /etc/keymap.2.4 and put "grave" in the <function>-q spot.  I tried loadkeys but that didn't seem to work for me.  After reboot I got a back quote when pressing <function>-q.

I am not sure which file  (2.6 or 2.4) gave the proper results.  I am little rushed now to test it again.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Pdaxrom Choices
« on: February 19, 2007, 11:34:33 pm »
I have been away from the forums/pdaxrom and thus the cutting edge recently and am coming back confused.  I am currently running beta3, as it was 'stable' when I last flashed roms.  Now in looking over the forum I see various posts about rc121 and pdaxii13.  Are these the same rom just different variations?  Is one more stable than the other?  I believe Meanie is doing work on pdaxii13.  Is this part of pdaxrom or an offshoot?

Thanks for clarification.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Bash Profile Question
« on: August 12, 2006, 12:57:47 am »
(newbie alert:)

I am trying to set my PATH variable in the bash shell.  I would like to put a .profile file in my home directory but this does not seem to be working.  Does pdaxrom only allow for /etc/profile or is there some other detail that I am missing?  I am under the impression that bash checks both ~/.profile and ~/.bash_profile for configuration.

I am using beta3 on akita.

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Corrupted Nand Recovery
« on: June 30, 2006, 08:30:04 pm »
Before trying out OZ I made a NAND backup of my pdax system.  I didn't back up my files otherwise  .  Now when I load the NAND into the c1000 the thing won't boot up.  The trisoft NAND does work, just not my pdax NAND.  I need a couple files from the pdax installation.  Is there a way to read files off of a NAND without installing it on the Z?

I know.  I should have backed up the files  .  (Newbie alert.)

C1000/3x00 Hardware / Sd Card Resuscitation
« on: March 25, 2006, 11:37:52 pm »
I am looking for suggestions as to how to resuscitate a disfunctional sd card.  It is no longer recognized by the Z, nor by window$ xp.  I cannot format it using fdisk, nor does mkfs.ext2 work.  Does anyone have any tricks that will kickstart this thing back into functionality.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / ./gnu-tar Segmentation Fault
« on: August 28, 2005, 09:55:18 pm »
Being a noob I've never gotten a segmentation fault before.  I'm trying to get pocketworkstation going.  I got the -big-*.tgz file from pocketworkstation.org onto the sd, made sure that fstab said ext2 for the sd, downloaded and unpacked the gnu-tar package from pocketworkstation.org.  Then I ./gnu-tar 'd the big package and got the segmentation fault as an error.

Can anyone tell me where to look to find a way to get through this?

Sharp ROMs / Give A Fish, They'll Eat For A Day.
« on: August 19, 2005, 01:24:04 am »
Can someone point me in the direction of man pages/ howto's for the sharp rom?

Some specifics I'm looking for:  wireless howto, bz2 howto, available shell commands for the sharp rom.  (iwconfig doesn't seem to work as it does in debian, bunzip not found)

More specifically, how would I troubleshoot my wireless connection?  Is there a log file created when the 'network' connection routine bombs out?

thx

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Wifi Connection Problems
« on: August 17, 2005, 02:07:00 pm »
My c1000 arrived a couple of days ago.

I got an ambicom 1100c wifi card yesterday that worked right out of the package.

The problem:  The card connected to my neighbor's access point (netgear), which had no wep encryption.  When I tried to connect to my wep-encrypted access point (lynksys) it wouldn't go through.        (I've checked the wep key several times, made sure I was spelling things right, tried several different configurations on the card setup.)  Is there a trick to this I am not seeing?

I'm using the sharp rom off of the trisoft site.

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Newbie 1000 Questions
« on: August 02, 2005, 04:30:14 pm »
I am thinking of moving from palm to linux with an sl-c1000.  I have some questions:

I use my pda at work for data entry into a spreadsheet.  In order for this to work smoothly I need to be able to turn the machine on and have access to the spreadsheet fairly quickly.  The palm does this nicely.  Is there a delay in getting the zaurus going?  How long?  I understand that there is a lengthy boot process.  Is there a sleep mode that will allow me to save on batteries throughout the day and still have quick access to the machine?  Does this depend on which OS I have running?

The pricejapan price is nice.  Can anyone comment on the English conversion?  Does pricejapan convert?  If so, is this conversion effective enough for me to get the zaurus up and running nicely?  If not, is there a good howto on the web that will allow me to get going on my own?  I have some experience with linux and currently have debian running on my laptop.  Does someone else have a nice inexpensive conversion?

Does anyone have a guess as to when Sharp might be releasing the sl-c1500, with built in wi-fi (or alternately a second [internal] cf-slot) and 256 megs ram?  (Pure speculation on the model number and features, but we can dream can’t we?)

When the z is used as a usb hard drive, do all memory devices show up as drives on the desktop computer?  (CF, SD, internal flash?)  Does it make a difference if your desktop is linux? Windows?  Do you need special drivers for the z, or do normal hard-drive drivers do the trick?  (I’d like to be able to pop the zaurus into computers at work and have my files show up.)

On some screen shots the fonts do not appear to be smooth.  Is this a persistent problem?

Lot’s of questions, but the thing is not cheap and I want to know if it will suit my needs before I plunk down the change.
