For Sale / Wanted / Wanted: dead Cosmo/Cosmo keyboard
« on: March 07, 2021, 04:44:53 am »
I have a Cosmo without a keyboard. I am looking for a keyboard. Anybody has a dead cosmo that I could scavenge? Ideally from the EU due to shipping costs.

For Sale / Wanted / Sellin Cosmo with Czech or US English keyboard
« on: March 06, 2021, 07:06:51 am »
I am selling my Cosmo. New, I just opened the box and checked it works (it does). With Czech (EDIT: or US English) keyboard. I can send ti anywhere in the EU for 400 euros plus shipping (20 euros in the EU, like 5 € in Czechia). even with the "March Madness" sale, you would need to pay VAT now that Brexit happened I think, so I think it is still a good deal.

I am buying an e-ink phone instead.

(it is a replacement for one that failed, taht is why it is new)

EDIT: Somebody wants a Czech keyboard for their English keyboard Cosmo, so if you want, I could swap US English keys for the Czech ones.

For Sale / Wanted / Gemini/Cosmo battery
« on: January 12, 2021, 02:01:48 pm »
Anybody in need of Gemini/Cosmo battery? I have a brand new one (used for about three days). I bought it because I thought my issue with my Cosmo was due to a faulty battery but it was not the case. The batteries for the Cosmo and Gemini are the same, SXX600.
I am based in Czechia, so probably somebody here or in Europe due to shipping costs. But you would get it quicker than from China (I waited for a month for it).

40 € plus shipping. (cost me about 55)

Some time ago, Android started to report battery charge "-1%" (that is a minus sign there). It seems to work otherwise. I can charge the phone and it works for about a day before turning off without any warning. But it is annoying to have no idea about the charge and also Google Play refuses to install or update any apps. Have you ever seen anything like that on Cosmo or on other phones? I tried googling but it does not seem common at all. Could this be a software issue or should I order a new battery? (Planet computers want to charge 95 pounds for it - it costs about 40 when I order it online and it is somewhat easy to replace, once one gets rid of that adhesive between the battery and the metal plate holding it in place).

UPDATE: I went ahead and created a sort of teardown guide in the second post and edited the title of this post accordingly. Original post starts below:

My CoDi failed (the internal crack that many people suffered). Unfortunately, I then managed to crack the glass display. Even though I notified Planet Computers about the CoDi failure about two months before I managed to crack it physically and they initially promised to replace it free of charge, now they want 135 pounds for it - way more than it is worth to me. So I was thinking about removing it altogether, because even cracked, it can still suck quite a lot of power when I forget to turn it off in settings.

Has anyone tried to dismantle the part of Cosmo with CoDi? I found a FCC document covering internals of the Cosmo in this thread: https://www.oesf.org/forum/index.php?topic=36134.0 but it is not that informative regarding a procedure to open the device up. Any suggestions?

Astro Slide - Hardware / Camera - is it IMX586?
« on: October 14, 2020, 05:24:30 pm »
Planet announced the camera for Astro a while back to be 48MP from Sony. To me it sounds like the IMX586 model, so once again the true resolution is more like 12MP than 48 MP (https://www.nextpit.com/48-mp-or-not-look-at-sony-new-camera-sensor), but still a nice improvement over the Cosmo. Apparently, the final results can be quite different (and that is from phones that use an additional camera): https://www.notebookcheck.net/Sony-IMX586-Comparison-Review-Five-48-MP-smartphones-face-off-in-a-camera-duel.428434.0.html.

Do you think this is indeed the camera Astro will come with? And is there any hope it shoots decent pictures with the default settings, or will we need to wait for some hack like the lovely Shuntcap's GCam for Cosmo? https://www.oesf.org/forum/index.php?topic=35912?

General Discussion / Vivaldi - a great browser for the Cosmo
« on: April 30, 2020, 06:02:47 pm »
I was quite pleased to hear a CEO of the Vivaldi company talk about owning a Cosmo and Gemini at 15:30 here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhkkFcEwCBo

They just released a stable version for Android and it is optimized for landscape mode, apparently, as mentioned in the video. It beats Chrome and other browsers by a large margin (and can sync with a desktop version, though that is just a bit buggy but useful enough). I wholly recommend both on desktop and especially on your phone!

I am using eSIM and a normal SIM. I want to have the eSIM as default for data, calls and SMS. Cosmo keeps asking me after every reboot to pick a default sim.

Is there anybody with the same setup who either gets the same problem or for whom it works ok? It is annoying since data does not work after a reboot.

I cannot switch the sims as the operator of my physical SIM will not give me an eSIM.

I am on the latest firmware, but I am not sure if I still do not suffer from something that was presumed to be fixed, i.e. this from the release notes:
4. The eSIM chip status is now fixed after Cosmo restart, so eSIM selection is preserved (instead of switching to SIM lost 2)
