C1000/3x00 Hardware / Usb Host And Client
« on: August 15, 2007, 07:16:44 am »
Does anyone know enough about the host / client system on the Zaurus to tell me how it prevents damage when a client cable is plugged in.

With a client cable 5 volts is supplied from the host. This comes in the same pin as the 5 volt comes out of when a host cable is plugged in (I think). Why does this not cause a problem?

Reason for knowing.
I just bought a Nokia 770 and the USB native mode is client but it can be made into a host port. Given that the Zaurus does both at the same time and that the only difference between the two physically is the shape of the metal surround (small pliers and brute force fix that problem) I was going to look at making the 770 the same.

Off Topic forum / Tomtom Go 300
« on: October 14, 2006, 05:47:38 pm »
Is there anyone with an indepth knowledge of the TOmTOM boot sequence. I have what appears to be a blank tomtom go 300. I bought it as one of the ones with faulty voltage regulators, only the power LED worked when power was applied. Having ripped it to bits and looked all the voltages are fine, I can tell from the current draw that it is turning on, the current draw also tells me it's trying to do something but no screen and no noises. There is data buis activity on the processor and generally about the thing inside. I reckon it's flash is erased but I can't find squat about it on the net. Opentom gave me no clues.

I am probably looking for jtag information or serial console boot information or similar that will allow me to see what isn't going on.

Off Topic forum / Transreflective Displays
« on: June 03, 2006, 06:06:01 pm »
Anyone got any links or reading about what laptops are available with transreflective displays. I am sick of hiding behind things and squinting in order to read my laptop outside.

I just spent a month in Indonesia installing wifi gear outside and configuring it was a nightmare with the sun.

As far as I can find there is only the OQO and at 5 inches it's a tad smaller than I need. I would ideally like 10 inch or so.

Off Topic forum / Flybook
« on: May 31, 2006, 04:45:54 pm »
Does anyone have a Flybook and can you tell me if the touch screen is a passive resistive or an active like a wacom tablet.

The difference being that on the latter you can rest your hand on the screen when writing but with a passive resistive you can't.

Does anyone have an Intermec 6651?

Is it possible to put Linux on?
Are they made by Sharp?

There seems to be precious little information about them on the net. The processor seems a tad slow but the screen looks good. I am struggling with the smalls creen on the SL series.

I would like a Flybook but finances won't run to it.

General Discussion / Remote Control
« on: March 12, 2006, 05:08:57 am »
I just sold my 860 and forgot that I had a CE-RH1 remote so I now need to alter it to make it work on my 3000 ie change it into a CE-RH2.

Assuming it works in the same way the I just need the impedance values for the 5 functions.

The RH1 control is from the two connections on the plug nearest to the wire, not the tip.

The RH1 is a follows.

No button: OC
Volume up: 2500 ohms
Volume down: 6400 ohms
Fast forward: 1300 ohms
Fast rewind: 700 ohms
Stop: 360 ohms

Will some kind person please measure those on an RH2.

Off Topic forum / New Ebay Scam
« on: February 24, 2006, 05:38:50 pm »
Just done a search on eBay and came back with a list. I right clicked and opened in new tab on an item and got the eBay login screen. On closer inspection it is an actual auction listing that looks like an eBay login screen. You only notice this if you scroll down and get the postage details and stuff. The listing only lasted about 5 mintues before it was an invalid item but it is a damn good way of getting your details from you.

I saved the listing but don't want to post it here because soemone may enter their details and I am pretty sure it will forward them if you log into it.

I am not good at HTML and the page is huge but if anyone wants to take a look and tell me if it is as I think then it would be interesting.

I can attach it if a mod reckons it's safe to do so or I will PM it if someone wants it.

C1000/3x00 Hardware / 3000 Usb Host Ports
« on: February 16, 2006, 04:33:09 pm »
The roms I have had on my 3000 all report two USB host ports so I decided to go looking for them. I suspect that these ports come directly from some crappy BGA device specifically designed to make it hard and I can't trace them from the port on the outside to a chip on the inside.

So what I can find is that the USB port goes to the square arrangement shown in one of the attachments. The other attachment is a drawing of the connections to that square that I can work out.

The two at the top left go to the sync plug for USB connection. They are probably the USB client for the synch cable. Is it allowable to ahve a miniB and the synch cable plugged in at the same time?

Any suggestions for tying it down some more looking for this elusive second USB host port?

Linux Issues / Linux Command Needed
« on: February 14, 2006, 05:42:58 am »
Can someone please give me the exact command to copy the microdrive to a CF in the CF slot such that when I take the microdrive out and replace it with the CF all that I have will be there as though no change has taken place.

I guess it will be something like

cp -R /dev/hda1 /mnt/cf

but I'm not sure and I can't test it until I've swapped it out so would appreciate a concrete answer to save me trying then swapping back and forward.

How shuold I partition / format it?

It's a 3000 with PdaXrom.

5x00 Hardware / 5000 Not Charging
« on: February 07, 2006, 05:12:24 pm »
Much measuring and reading and I have found the problem with my 5000 not charging. Yellow light is on and stays  but the battery never charges.

The solution is the component marked with the red stripe. Does anyone have a motherboard out of a 5X00 that they can measure the resistance on. It may be a fuse but if I short it out the current flow through the battery is 1 amp which seems a lot. According to the datasheet sample it should be a resistor of around 19k but the Zaurus doesn't use the chip in the way recommended by the data sheet so it's going to be different.

Sorry for the size of the file, it's 600k but had to be in order to see the componenet I am talking about.

General Discussion / 3000 Current Draw
« on: February 06, 2006, 08:34:08 am »
Being a sad type I measured some current consumption on my 3000.

Default clock speed, PdaXrom installed, no running applications, fully charged battery.
All numbers in milli amps

Off: 35
On with backlight off: 185
On with backlight minimum: 200
On with backlight maximum: 413

THe reast are with minimum backlight.
Wifi inserted and connected to AP: 350

This one was a surprise.
The radio in the wireless takes less than the LED in the wired!!
wired optical mouse, still: 230
wired optical mouse, moving: 280
wireless optical mouse, still: 215
wireless optical mouse, moving: 225

Bluetooth class 1 USB, not connected to anything so searching I assume: 215, 250 when the LED flashes.

XMMS with Mplayer playing a 320 X 240 movie full screen

Not zoomed: 330, 500 ish when the disc is accessed.
Zoomed: 270

Conclusion
Get a wireless mouse
Backlight off and backlight on minimum doesn't have much difference
Zooming the screen saves a lot of power so do your movies at 320x240.

And as an aside one terminal running takes just under 10 ma, that was a shock as well.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / 3000 Wont Reboot
« on: February 06, 2006, 08:21:04 am »
After exiting X, from the command prompt neither "reboot" or "shutdown -r now" will work. They both stop with a message about no more processes running or something similar and I have to remove battery cover and press reset.

Is there a fix?

Sharp ROMs / Mplayer (again)
« on: January 26, 2006, 09:14:42 am »
SL-C860 with Cacko and Kino with Mplayer.

I can get it to play fine, landscape mode full screen with "-vf rotate=1 -fs" and that is fine but I can't control it at all. "enter" pauses and restarts but any other key just stops the playback and takes it back to the kino screen.

If I run Mplayer from the command line then the fast forward / reverse and skip all work fine but the picture is small.

I would prefer to sort the keys and use Kino but a solution for getting it big on Mplayer will do at a push.

The keys are set correctly, at default in the Kino preferences.
