General Discussion / A780/e680 - Full Fledged Linux Phone
« on: May 18, 2006, 08:49:28 am »
Hi guys,

the OpenEZX project aims to replace the Motorola distribution on these phones with a stack fully based on open source software. The kernel guy is making great progress with 2.6.16 and I added first support for the phone in OpenEmbedded.

If you want to get one of those, then act now or come too late - unfortunately the phone seems to be nearly sold out and MOTO stopped producing it. I just ordered mine at ARP DATACON ( who seems to have some in stock.

For me it's a great opportunity to have an Embedded Linux phone with (not now, but hopefully soon) Opie, E and GPE on it, this is why I'm posting about it.

Python / Python 2.4.3 For Sharprom
« on: April 25, 2006, 11:48:02 am »
Hi SharpROM and clones-lovers,

I've updated my python-for-arm-linux feed at PythonForSharpROM with Python 2.4.3. This time I used a very ancient Embedix SDK in order to make the packages work with the SharpROM.

I'd be interested in knowing
*) whether they work for you and
*) whether the SharpROM feed is still of any use for you.

The URL for the project page is Python-for-arm-linux - note that the package browser points to the "modern" feed, which is atm. older than the SharpROM feed ;-)

Happy Python'ing,

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Do You Prefer Pim Apps Or A Web Browser?
« on: July 08, 2005, 09:45:14 am »
The 16MB (actually 14.5MB) default Opie image for SL5500/SL5000 has not enough room for both PIM apps and a web browser. If you were to decide whether to have the Opie PIM apps or the Konq/E installed by default, what would you chose?

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Which Pim Backend Do You Use?
« on: July 08, 2005, 09:38:05 am »
Due to some size contraints, I'm evaluating to remove one PIM data backend in the forthcoming OpenZaurus 3.5.4/Opie for SL5000/SL5500 Image. (On the other models, we have enough space to include both per default).

I'm leaning towards removing the sqlite backend for the collie image, but I will reconsider this if many people are telling me they're using this backend. So - please participate on this poll if you have a collie and are using the Opie PIM apps.

Site Suggestions, Requests, and Updates / A Home For Simpad People?
« on: December 06, 2004, 09:58:56 am »

As you might know (or not) SIEMENS once produced a WebPad, the so called SIMpad, where Opie (and GPE) has been ported to. We used the OpenZaurus buildroot to produce the OpenSIMpad Linux distribution.

As you might also know, the active Zaurus community is (thanks to Sharp's odd marketing) more or less shrinking instead of growing. One of our goals should therefore be to bundle resources rather than fragmenting information because of too much channels.

My concrete request: I would like to close the discussion forum @ and let the people discuss on this forum. This forum has a good number of knowledgeable users and developers and both communities would benefit from that merge. The SIMpad people have more or less the same problems as the Zaurus people when it comes to running Opie and GPE.
There is just a couple of SIMpad specifics (e.g. installing a new bootloader or a new image) which would make it necessary to add a forum just for those specifics - more or less the same what the the different Zaurus incarnations need.

I think it would be a good thing that would strenghten this web forum and would push it one step forwards to the definite Linux-PDA forum.

What do you think?

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Sl-c3000 Kernel Source
« on: December 02, 2004, 09:39:15 am »
Can all of you SL-C3000 owners please formally request publication of the kernel sources?
This could (maybe) speed up them releasing the source hence enabling 3K-support of 3rd party ROMs.

OpenZaurus/Opie/Qtopia / Opie SDK (beta) released
« on: February 17, 2004, 02:33:26 pm »

Opie developer zecke just released the first version of the new Opie SDK.

At you can find a SDK including KDevelop. It features:

- Opie builds for ARM and X86,
- Python Qt for X86
- App Templates for:
--- Application,
--- Applet,
--- MenuApplet,
--- InputMethod,
--- TodayPlugin and
--- NetworksettingsPlugin.

You still need to get a arm-linux-gcc2 toolchain from the usual places.

Have fun testing. Errata and other fixes will also show up in the same dir.
