Ubuntu / The Birth Of Zubuntu
« on: October 23, 2008, 10:47:09 am »
Just came across this thread and then saw the screenshots and Cortez's site on ZUbuntu.
This is great I think.

First project fdor this weekend found - Install ZUbunto onm my Zaurs C1000.

Note : I wish there was a bit more info on what features work right now and what doesnt as yet.

But kudos for this effort. Brings some new life to the old Zaurus.

Hi,
Do you think Zaurus computers are always good computers nowadays, in front of Ipod Touch etc ?  If the Zaurus is out of order one day, will I be  able to find pieces easily for it ?

If you are looking for something more modern in interface design and all that (as you compared with iTouch), then do not consider the Zaurus.
The Zaurus is very much limited in its traditional stylus oriented computer paradigm'ed interface.

Finger touch sensitivity or finger friendly menus are not what the Zaurus is for. Inertial scrolling is not what the Zaurus is for. Good multimedia playback is not what the Zaurus is for. Primarily the Zaurus is a good pocket computer.

As for the parts and all - you know that the Zaurus has been discontinued/not supported by Sharp anymore. So eBay is your only hope for parts or for replacement etc.
And frankly as a long time Zaurus user - I feel the Zaurus ecosystem has slowed down a lot - in terms of new software for it.
Unless you really want a Zaurus for what it does best - you have more alternatives now than the Zaurus - specially if you want to hold it in the light of iTouch/iPhone comparison.

You sold your 6000 with it's built-in wifi and beautiful screen?   (looking at signature) How does the N810 screen compare with the 6000? I suppose maybe the N810's browser is what made you leap.

Actually I sold my SL6000 after I had both the 6000 and the C1000 and had to choose between one ... sadly I choose the clamshell factor and keyboard of the C1000 over the 6000 screen (also sold of my C750, since wife wouldn't let me keep so many toys

The N810 screen is great - readable in direct sunlight - but still from what little I remember, the 6000 screen was more readable and bright in sunlight.
But the touch sensitivity on the N810 screen is smoother. I miss the rotation aspect of course of the Zaurus series (there is a rotation hack for the Nokia IT's but not as good).

I do regularly check in on the Zaurus forum - and I mean daily ...
but sadly my Zaurus (C1000) usage has gone down - primarily since I got the Nokia N810.

Wince on the move connectivity was important (checking personal email from office, get instant information from internet, check up a map for a location, stock quotes etc ), the N810 with its built in wifi and the BT connectivity to my 3G phone has proved very helpful.

Sadly for the Zaurus I would need to buy another CF BT card (I have a CF Wifi card) to get the same level of mobile connectivity, that to with swapping often. I do miss the Zaurus keyboard a lot.

Go into xTerminal.
Select main Menu  -> Tools  -> Settings
Click on Toolbar Shortcut
Add (New) a new shortcut
Title = Sudo (or whatever you want to name it)
Value = s . u . d . o . KP_Space . g . a . i . n . r . o . o . t . KP_Enter

The discussion on this and the above command to go into the shortcut command line is as per this thread
(Note :  you dont need any additional software for this)

If you want a Menu in the side bar to lauch xterm and go into su mode at the same time, then install "Personal Menu" application.
You can then add custom commands to start any app you want from the sidebar itself. Pretty customizable app.
You can see my personal menu with the item X Terminal SUDO for launching from sidebar (method 2), as well as in the background the X Terminal itself with the toolbar shortcut SUDO added as explained in method 1.

Or, more to the point:

Code: [Select]
alias su "sudo gainroot"

or even easier, on oss-xterm just create a toolbar shortcut to add a menu item for sudo gainroot (along with shortcuts for Tab, Esc, PgUp, PgDn, Ctrl). that way you don't need to type anything at all, just a click and you are in su mode.

You've highlighted things the Z will probably never have: Skype and Flash.

Skype could be a make or break deal for some; the SIP/VOIP clients on Zaurus, especially for Cacko, have not been magnificent, not sure if latest Ekiga or similar on Angstrom are good.

I've had bluetooth networking via PAN, and also using a 3G phone working just fine, it's just PPP over RFCOMM over BT!

There was a nice shoutcast client for QT; I think Quasar addressed many weaknesses.

The Nokia also has working sat nav, whereas the Z only has it using a hacked-up tomtom application.

Very true and a good point you bought up about the GPS. Actually as a in-car device and in-pocket too the N810 doubles up pretty good.

In the car GPS and  media player come in handy (am looking forward to Canola Car edition).
Actually for the Zaurus I invested in a Wifi Card, but held back from the BT card. True the Zaurus did offer this with the add-ons.
IN fact while I was a loud mouth supporting separate add-on expandability paradigm of the Zaurus, but now with the built-in wifi and BT on the N810, I am spoilt and feel foolish about my earlier stance.  Makes you realize how viewpoints change with different  perspectives.

On the promise of better things to come for the Nokia IT, I am looking forward to better QT support on the IT with Nokia purchase of Trolltech.
Also the noBounds project looks promising... and the supposed developments of Diablo (OS2008 revision) should stir up a few things.

And yes, I should mention, there is already a kernel hack to get rotation supported on OS2008. In fact Canola using this hack supports portrait mode media player too (don't know why Nokia left this out, all modern handheld OS's should support rotation).

BTW Capn_Fish, getting root access is as easy as installing one software (becomeroot) from the repositories. I didn't really find it that hard (except that its not in-built, maybe as a security concern).

On the software note - from a user perspective and not a hackability perspective, I am actually happier with the OS2008 on N810 than the Zaurus.
The N810 allows me to do more in terms of daily life usage  , than the Z in these areas
Skype/Gizmo
Chat online
Connect to Internet by 3G thru BT for constant internet access
Podcast support and listening and downloading - all in one device - on the Z it was a bit more difficult to do all .
Good Video and media player
Very good browser support and flash support - plus support for mobile versions of sites (and iPhone versions)

On hackability and tweaking perspective, the Z did allow more to be done. But again I always want to use my device first and then tweak and hack. The same was true on my Zaurus C1000. In that useage sense, I do like the N810 and what is provides right now.

Of course, I do miss many other aspects of the Zaurus , and do now and again fire up my Z.

New products and alternatives / Zaurus Or N810 Or ?
« on: March 07, 2008, 02:01:49 pm »
I bought a N810 and have been using my N810 exclusively in place of the Zuaurs.

It is the perfect replacement ? - hell no.
But its has its own advantages and so far they have trumped over the Zaurus in many ways.

Firstly - it has a keyboard which makes typing emails on the go and notes possible and better than on a N800 (my wife uses a N800).
But of course the keyboard in no way compares to the Zaurus keyboard whch was far better.

Connectivity : Trumpts the Zaurus in all ways. I had to buy an CF Wifi card for the Zaurus to use it for Wifi networking.
The N810 built-in wifi is better than the CF Wifi on Zaurus. The N810- also gives mt BT Networking, hence I can just BT PAN over my 3G phone to get the internet when I don't have Wifi.

Browser and Multimedia is definitely better on the N810 than on the Zaurus. (Canola beats the hell out of any media apps on Zaurus, and there are others as well).

PIM is lacking in N810. With GPE apps I at least have access to basic Calendering and contacts on N810. Zaurus was better in this regards with KoPI suite.
Again GPE Calendar does sync with Google Calendar wirelessly, so that is again one advantage - I can check GCal without opening uip a browser.

SSH, VNC works on the N810, but the Zaurus was much more tweakable. I dont get the same feeling with the N810. Maybe because I havent played enough with it. I use it more rather than playing and resetting things on it. The Zaurus made me play on it more - it was that friendly as well as use it exhastively.

Office suite functionality really lacks on the N810. The Zuaurus with Textmaker and Hancom apps had Word editing and spreadsheets going for it

I can use my N810 as a GPS unit and a multimedia player in my car (I only play MP3, not Videos when driving  :-) It can mount easily on the windshield, the Zaurus really couldnt. Also BT Headphones work on the N810 with A2DP support being hacked onto it. The Zaurus was seriously short in this dept.

Lastly on the form factor issue - the N810 is more carriable in my pocket, now that I have a older Zaurus to compare it with.

But The Zaurus as most others said, was far better in terms of being a PDA and a mini Linux laptop.

Overall, I still have a feeling that the Zaurus HAD more potential which was never filled in for lack of Sharp's support on hardware iterations side, as well as developer support.

General Discussion / Pandora
« on: December 24, 2007, 10:39:35 am »
The Looks vs Functionality debate is a very old one. There's one camp who will go for function over form and there will be the 2nd camp who will favour looks over function (Vertu camp ?).

But thankfully there's a third camp - the majority,  who want a harmonious balance of form and function together in one 'sexy looking' and 'powerful' device.

So there goes, this Pandora caters to only the 1st camp. And thats why I think this will be a niche device, not even for geeks like most Zaurus users.
