Angstrom & OpenZaurus / OpenZaurus 3.5.1 released !!!
« on: September 21, 2004, 01:41:44 pm »
There is a ToDo list for the future release of OZ3.6.

http://www.openembedded.org/oe_wiki/index.php/OzTODO3.6.0

It was last updated on Aug 11.
I imagine now that 3.5.1 is out there can be much more focus on the next stable release.

Here's a silly question...

from the OzReleaseNotes, it says,
Quote
Sharp SL-5000 and SL-5500

    * use Notepad + <cursor-left> and Notepad + <cursor-right> to switch between console VTs or back to Opie (alternatively use chvt x from the console, where x is the number of the VT to switch to)
Which button are they referring to as Notepad?

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / OpenZaurus 3.5.1 released !!!
« on: September 21, 2004, 01:05:49 am »
I too noticed the discrepancy in the memory shown in Opie's System Info.

I flashed the 64-0 image, and System Info shows 32 MB total .
If I go to the command line and use 'free' I see 64 MB total.

One other thing I've noticed is if I switch to terminal 1 from the O-menu, the backlight will follow my apm settings as if the unit were idle. ie: dims after 30 seconds, off after 60, even if I've been typing on the keyboard. Once I switch back to terminal 2/OPIE, the light comes back on.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Wireless Profiles
« on: September 12, 2004, 12:53:23 am »
I myself  got around this by mapping the different schemes manually into /etc/network/interfaces. I used the following page as a guideline.

http://www.shallowsky.com/linux/networkSchemes.html
(scroll down to the Debian section).

Once I got that working OK, I used Opie-SH to bring up a dialog box with a drop-down menu where I could simply select the preferred scheme and click OK.

I have no problems pulling shoutcast streams with the Opie Player. I\'ll use it a lot for when I\'m cutting the lawn or working out in the yard.

I just save the playlists on the Z, then open them up in the Media player. the only problem I can foresee (hasn\'t happened yet), is if the site renames or changes the playlist.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Multiple WLAN profiles in OZ3.3.5
« on: May 21, 2004, 09:16:45 am »
I was using the cardctl method for a while, but then I ran across this link.

http://lists.debian.org/debian-powerpc/200...8/msg00505.html

Since the OZ uses Debian based networking scripts, the method described on that page also works fine on the Z.

Once I got that working, I wrote a script using Opie-SH so that I tap an icon, it brings up a box and I choose the profile I want from a drop-down menu. It works flawlessly.

I\'ll post my config files if anyone\'s interested (don\'t have my Z with me right now).

Accessories / SD to CF Adaptor for the Zaurus 5500?

The 5500 has a slot for both types of cards. no need for an adaptor

Software / numbers on opie-jumpx (fitaly) keyboard)
« on: April 09, 2004, 02:06:16 am »
Let me be the first to call myself an idiot. The numbers which appear to be next to the buttons (seemingly accessed by [shifit] or [alt] or [ctrl]) are buttons themselves (though annoyingly small ones). question answered.

I guess I do need more sleep. tgif!

For Sale / Wanted / Wanted: Stylus SL-5500 or 5600
« on: April 09, 2004, 12:08:51 am »
I switched to one of those 4-in-1 pens with a stylus. It\'s a pain sometimes to carry around the extra pen, but it does fit in my leather case, so it\'s no problem when I use that. I always hated the Z\'s stylus as it\'s significantly shorter than most PDA\'s. Using a full-size pen stylus is so much mor comfortable, it\'s worth it to have to carry it around. (I keep the stylus for when I don\'t feel like it)

Software / numbers on opie-jumpx (fitaly) keyboard)

this may seem like a stupid question.
I installed opie-jumpx and & can\'t figure out how to enter in the numbers.
What am I missing? (I must need more sleep)

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Multiple WiFi profiles in OZ 3.3.5
« on: April 07, 2004, 03:40:39 pm »
I ran across this link that shows how to map several profiles directly into /etc/network/interfaces
http://lists.debian.org/debian-powerpc/200...8/msg00505.html
To make it even simpler, I use Opie-SH to bring up a small box on screen that allows me to pick from a drop-down style menu, then click \"OK.\" I can switch to a different network in three clicks. Works great!

....the 5600 battery lasts twice as long.

That would be my only complaint about the 5500. The battery will drain fairly quickly especially when using a wi-fi card. I typically turn the backlight off whenever I can to make the charge last longer (it helps a lot).

Actually it is flash ROM. (It\'s not volitile like RAM is)

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / HowTo make WEP work on OZ 3.3.5
« on: April 06, 2004, 04:25:20 pm »
I was using the pcmcia scripts for the longest time, but then I decided to go back to the Debian native network scripts. I stumbled acros a little page that shows how to edit the /etc/network/interfaces to create profiles for all the networks I connect to. Once that was working , with the help of Opie-sh, I have an on-screen icon that brings up a drop-down menu to select from, and *viola*, instant connectivity. It\'s been working perfectly for me. (WEP included)

here\'s a link where I got started.
